'The game of football in Malaysia is too expensive, unbearable by the state government. I hope football fans understand, not only Perak cannot afford it, other states (football teams have financial problems) also cannot (help solve).
'We (the state government) are also not able to solve the problem of salary arrears for Perak FC players. It is at the expense of (the sponsor of Perak FC),' he said when met by reporters after attending the Aidilfitri Raya ceremony of Perak government-linked companies (GLCs) with the Menteri Besar at the Indera Mulia Stadium compound here today.Saarani said however, the development of football would still continue through the Perak Football Association (PAFA) which plays a role in unearthing new talents from school students and youths.'The cost (of football development) is very affordable and the state government has also helped to finance about RM1 million,' he said.Yesterday, Perak FC chairman Datuk Seri Azim Zabidi reportedly confirmed that squad had to withdraw from the Super League competition next season due to financial issues.Azim was reported to have said that his team had done everything it could to develop the team, including spending almost RM40 million over the past three years. — Bernama

Penang open to renegotiating reclamation off Persiaran Karpal Singh
BATU KAWAN: The state government has signalled its readiness to renegotiate the proposed land reclamation project off Persiaran Karpal Singh following concerns raised by the ProtectKarpal group. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the state government remained committed to upholding the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process, and any decision would be based on its outcome. The state government has given the project developer until February next year to obtain the EIA approval, he added. "The public hearing ended on June 30 and the company needs to review the concerns raised and address them accordingly," said Chow. "Should the EIA approval not be granted, the project may not proceed. If approved, we can renegotiate and scrutinise the work methods to minimise any issues." He was responding to ProtectKarpal — the Protect Karpal Singh Drive Action Committee, a group protesting the project — which claimed that the state was willing to scale down the reclamation project. Chow confirmed the claim and said the state government was open to considering the group's requests. He also said while an agreement existed between the Penang Development Corporation (PDC) and the developer, the state government was open to renegotiation. "Scaling down the project will not necessarily affect the contract, but will require some 'sacrifices' on our part, particularly the land we are supposed to receive from the reclamation. "Sometimes, we have to make sacrifices or adjust our share to ensure a balanced outcome that benefits Penang and protects the environment." ProtectKarpal met Chow more than a week ago and submitted its demands, including a full rejection of the proposed reclamation due to potential ecological damage. It also called for Middle Bank, a seagrass-rich coastal area near the proposed project site, to be immediately gazetted as a marine sanctuary, citing its importance to local fisheries and ecological stability. In 2020, PDC signed a RM1 billion deal with PLB Engineering Bhd to develop and rehabilitate the Jelutong landfill. The site was originally a sanitary landfill, but since 2002, only construction debris and garden waste have been allowed. Earlier, Chow was met at the groundbreaking ceremony for the first and largest market complex in Batu Kawan. Costing RM46 million including earthworks, the project is expected to be completed by June 2027.

TAWAU: Local authorities have identified a suitable site for the construction of a new Multipurpose Hall in the Merotai area here. Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah President Brigadier General (Rtd) Tan Sri Liew Yun Fah said this follows the announcement by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor on Feb 16 regarding the allocation of RM2 million for the new hall. 'Actually, we have identified several suitable locations for the construction, involving three infrastructures, the hall, a vehicle parking area and a field. 'Therefore, the chosen site, located on a field spanning over 1.2 hectares, is deemed highly suitable after considering its elevated position and flood-free status,' he said Monday. At the same time, the selection of the proposed site is also part of the long-term development plan for Pekan Merotai Baharu. Liew said the site is situated within the Pekan Merotai Baharu plan, near Kijang Point. 'The State Government wants this new hall to serve as the heart of community activities in Merotai, covering economics, socialand cultural aspects. 'I believe that if managed well, it can become a central public hub and another economic establishment for the people of Merotai,' he said. In addition to the new hall, Hajiji also announced an allocation of RM1 million for the installation of solar lights from the Jambatan Putih intersection to Kampung Sungai Udin aimed at lighting up the main Merotai – Kalabakan road. Additionally, Kampung Melati Burut and Kampung Iban were officially gazetted as the latest recognised villages in Merotai.
