Odisha Police rescues 28-day-old infant allegedly sold by parents
Police rescued the infant from the house of a couple at Paikamal in neighbouring Bargarh district and handed it over to the child welfare committee (CWC), Titlagarh sub-divisional police officer Kalyan Behera told PTI over the phone.
Bhubaneswar, Jul 28 (PTI) Police in Odisha's Bolangir district on Monday rescued a 28-day-old baby girl who was allegedly sold by her parents for Rs 20,000 due to extreme poverty, officials said.
Bolangir district CWC in-charge chairperson Lina Babu confirmed that the infant was rescued from the house of a couple at Paikmal.
'We have not started an inquiry into the matter as the infant's rescue was our priority. During the day, we will launch a probe and lodge a police,' she said.
According to sources, the alleged incident of child sale came to light on Sunday from Bagdera village under Bhaleigaon Panchayat in Titilagarh sub-division.
A poverty-stricken couple, identified as Nila and Kanak Rana, has been accused of selling their newborn daughter for Rs 20,000, police said.
However, the Paikmal couple denied allegations of purchasing the child, but claimed that they brought the baby keeping in view her biological parents' poverty.
Officials said Nila and Kanak are both remarried. Nila has three daughters from his first wife, while Kanak has one daughter from her previous marriage.
Citing financial distress, the Rana couple allegedly handed over the newborn to the other family.
'We have not sold her. We gave the baby for her better upbringing, not for money,' Nila Rana told the CWC.

So far, the police have claimed that they have recovered around 50 jerseys and there's no clarity on how much money the security guard received after selling the jerseys to the online dealer. 'The guard claims he haggled a bit with the online dealer, but he hasn't yet specified how much he got for the deal,' a police source told TOI. The police have also been in touch with the online dealer, who informed them that the stock was sold to him as part of a stock clearance sale. 'The online dealer says he was not aware that the jerseys had been stolen,' the police source added. 'The guard had told the man in Haryana that the jerseys were part of a stock clearance sale due to renovation work that was going on at the office.' 'He [the guard] claims he lost it all to online gambling.' The official complaint in the matter was lodged by the BCCI at the Marine Drive police station on 17 July.

Mumbai: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Tuesday launched a fresh round of raids in Maharashtra as part of its money-laundering investigation into an illegal construction scam, with a focus on former Vasai-Virar Municipal Commissioner Anil Pawar. His residence and office premises were among the 12 locations searched across Vasai, Virar, Nashik and Mumbai. The buildings were sold primarily to lower-income buyers, many of whom were unaware of the legal violations. Earlier phases of the ED operation, conducted in May and July, uncovered widespread corruption involving town planning officials and political figures. Among those raided were YS Reddy, former Deputy Director of Town Planning, from whose Hyderabad residence ED recovered Rs 8.6 crore in cash and Rs 23 crore worth of jewellery and bullion. The agency also froze financial assets worth Rs 12 crore. Other individuals under scrutiny include Sitaram Gupta, an ex-corporator, from whose home Rs 45 lakh in cash was recovered hidden behind a plywood panel, and Vijay Tambat, allegedly connected to criminal networks. All 41 buildings were demolished earlier this year by court order, displacing around 2,500 families. The Bombay High Court and Supreme Court had mandated government-led rehabilitation efforts.
