Man broke safety order by sending woman Bruce Springsteen concert video
The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty in the District Court to the breach of a safety order contrary to section 33 (1) of the Domestic Violence Act 2018.

He received a one-month suspended sentence in March 2025 and later lodged an appeal against the severity of that term.Garda Rachel O'Mahony told the District Court Appeals Court that on June 20, 2024 the injured party reported to gardai that the man had breached a safety order on three different occasions.She said that on dates between February 2, 2024 and June 20, 2024 the man sent the injured party text messages to her mobile phone.Garda O'Mahony said that these messages included videos taken at a Bruce Springsteen concert in Croke Park and a YouTube link.Garda O'Mahony said that the woman said that this communication put her in fear. She also presented a victim impact statement to the judge which was not read aloud in court.Defence counsel for the man, Seosaimhín Ní Chathasaigh BL, said that her client cooperated fully with the gardai and did not dispute the charges.She said that he has sincere remorse for the hurt caused by his actions and this is not a pattern of behaviour which will continue in the future.Ms Ní Chathasaigh confirmed to the judge that the safety order has already been extended to last until 2030 with consent from her client.She said that her client is not seeking to avoid accountability but having a conviction would have life-altering effects in regards to his employment or possible future travel.Judge Callan said the victim impact statement was very clear about the extent of the fear that the injured party experienced.He said that the videos were 'intending to give a certain message' to the injured party, which was explained in her victim impact statement.
Judge Callan decided to overturn the man's criminal conviction on the condition that he pays a donation of 1,000 euro to Women's Aid, noting that the safety order remains in place until 2030.

"A deeply disturbing incident" - Person killed in suspected arson attack on car
Police in Northern Ireland have launched an investigation into a sudden death linked to an arson attack on a car in Co Tyrone. The PSNI received a report from members of the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) at 2.05pm on Saturday afternoon that a silver Mitsubishi Lancer GS2 was on fire in the Rylagh Road area of Omagh. "As fire officers extinguished the blaze they discovered that, tragically, a person had died as a result of the fire," PSNI Detective Inspector Keon said in a statement. 'We are treating this fire as arson, and our enquiries as to how the person came to be beside the vehicle are ongoing. Garda hospitalised after being assaulted while arresting sword-wielding man
A man has been charged with assaulting a garda after he was caught brandishing a sword in South Dublin last night. Officers responded to calls from locals that a man was walking around the Ballyogan area of South Dublin, armed with a sword in the early hours of this morning. When officers responded they attempted to apprehend the man, who was carrying what appeared to be a sword. It is understood the man, who is originally from an Eastern European country, has been residing in Ireland for some time, and gardai do have mental health concerns regarding this incident. One officer was minorly injured in the course of the arrest, before the man was apprehended and disarmed. The man was taken to Blackrock Garda station where he was subsequently charged with assault. He remains in Garda custody and is set to appear in court on Monday morning. The injured Garda was taken to hospital and has since been discharged. In a statement about the incident gardai said: 'Gardaí at Blackrock responded to reports of a male in possession of a sword in the Ballyogan area of Dublin shortly after 1:30am on Sunday, 3rd July 2025. The individual, a male in his 40s, was arrested and has since been charged in connection with the incident. He is expected to appear before the Courts (CCJ 2) on Monday, 4th August 2025. 'A member of An Garda Síochána (male) sustained an injury while responding and was taken to hospital for assessment. He has since been discharged. As the matter is now before the courts, An Garda Síochána is not providing further information at this time.' Former soldier who 'used his vehicle as a weapon' to ram motorist is jailed
A former member of the Defence Forces who 'used his vehicle as a weapon' and drove at another male has been jailed. Derek Donegan, 39, left his victim in fear that he was about to be killed in the horror incident that happened in north Louth in April 2021. At Dundalk Circuit Court, the ex-corporal pleaded guilty to endangerment on April 25, 2021 and was handed a two-and-a half year sentence. Judge Dara Hayes ordered him to serve an identical term after he admitted assaulting his partner causing her harm at a friend's house in Dublin in July last year. The court heard Donegan, of Hyde Park in Dundalk, Co Louth, who has 14 previous road traffic convictions, had an alcohol and cocaine problem. He has quit drink and drugs and has reconciled with his partner. The court previously heard that on Sunday, April 25, 2021, a Seat Leon was rear ended by a Ford Connect van driven by the defendant on the Ballymascanlon roundabout in Louth. Both vehicles pulled over and the drivers got out. Donegan apologised for driving too close but showed no concern about the damage. As the victim took photos of the damage and looked for insurance details, Donegan drove at him, hitting him with his van below the knees. The court heard the victim landed on the bonnet but was 'dumped' onto the road and feared for his life. Donegan sped off and the victim drove after him. When he pulled alongside, the thug rammed his car into a ditch. The victim asked bystanders to call gardai and was treated in hospital for cuts and back pain. In the other offence, he and his partner were leaving a friend's house in Erne Terrace in Dublin where they had drinks. An argument broke out and she told him to go back to Dundalk. However, he walked towards her and struck her in the face. She was treated at hospital for pain and shock. The woman then made a statement of withdrawal to gardai and said she and Donegan have reconciled. In sentencing, Judge Dara Hayes said: 'In the endangerment offence he used his vehicle as a weapon and sought to flee after he struck the injured party's car. 'An aggravating factor for the assault is that it was inter-partner violence and Section 40 of the Domestic Violence Act states to take specific account of that and a higher sentence is required than otherwise. He imposed a total of four and a half years for both offences with the final 18 months suspended and banned Donegan from driving for five years.
