Taulagi ruled out of Origin I in second blow to Maroons

Yahoo18-05-2025
Murray Taulagi has been ruled out of Queensland's side for State of Origin I with a calf injury, while Pat Carrigan will see a plastic surgeon on entering camp.
The Maroons were on Sunday handed a number of last-minute selection hurdles, with Taulagi's fitness the main concern.
The North Queensland winger was every chance to be named on the wing for the May 28 series opener, before he pulled up sore from the Cowboys' loss to Manly.
The 26-year-old is expected to miss at least a couple of weeks, ruling him out of at least Origin I and placing him in doubt for game two.
The setback is expected to ensure Selwyn Cobbo will keep his spot in Queensland's backline, with Robert Toia another option.
Cobbo hurt his wrist in the Broncos' loss to St George Illawarra on Sunday, but Brisbane were confident after the match the issue was not serious.
The Broncos are also hopeful Carrigan has not suffered any serious structural damage after a head clash with Jack de Belin in the final minute.
Carrigan had blood pouring from a split lip, but the location of the cut meant it could not be stapled up.
He is expected to see a plastic surgeon on Monday, the same day Maroons coach Billy Slater names his team and players begin entering camp.
The Maroons have already lost fellow forward Tom Gilbert to a pectoral injury, after he went down early in the Dolphins' loss to the Warriors on Saturday.
One man who won't replace him is in-form Warriors edge Kurt Capewell, who was on the plane back to Auckland on Sunday.
Meanwhile, one outside back known to be in the Maroons' squad is Valentine Holmes, who is expected to partner Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow in the centres.
Holmes' presence is desperately needed as a goalkicker, with fullback Kalyn Ponga Queensland's other option.
"He has always done the job and is in pretty decent form for the Dragons," former Queensland centre Brent Tate said.
"It looks like he has found his mojo again.
"Val is just arrow straight with his kicks, and the process he runs through is so consistent. There is none better in the game as pure strikers of the ball."

Lions: Elliot Daly set for X-ray as full-back seen icing wrist after injury scare

Elliot Daly will have a scan on a wrist injury that he sustained during the British and Irish Lions' 52-12 win over the Queensland Reds in Brisbane on Wednesday. Daly, the England utility back, was a late addition to Andy Farrell's starrting XV after Irishman Hugo Keenan - who was in line for his Lions debut - withdrew through illness. Advertisement The Saracens man started the Lions' first match Down Under against the Western Force, where the tourists underwhelmed, but ultimately came through 54-7 in Perth. Daly's inclusion meant that he was one of just two survivors from Farrell's starting XV, along with fly-half Finn Russell. Daly assisted Tommy Freeman's levelling try in Brisbane and again staked his claim for the Test 15 jersey with a positive display, though Blair Kinghorn is hot on his heels after his late arrival in Australia. Keenan is expected to return for the visit to the Waratahs in Sydney, and it remains to be seen what role the Scot Kinghorn will play, and how long Daly could be ruled out for. Advertisement Asked about the Englishman afterwards, Farrell admitted that his No15 was 'pretty sore', with TV cameras picturing the full-back icing his wrist, grimacing in pain. "He's got a bang on the forearm and he's going for an X-ray this evening so we've all got our fingers crossed,' Farrell said. "I'm not worried, we've got loads of full-backs. Keenan will be ready in a day or so and Kinghorn is good to go." The Lions continue their tour against the Brumbies on July 12 in Canberra, before one final warm-up match on July 12 in Adelaide against an Australia and New Zealand XV. The first Test match against the Wallabies takes place on July 19, back at the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.

Lions 52-12 Queensland Reds: Thumping win in Brisbane as Maro Itoje and Jac Morgan impress

British and Irish Lions again overcame an early onslaught to record another thumping win Down Under as Queensland Reds were beaten in Brisbane. For for second match running, Lions' opponents came out of the traps quickly and Jeffery Toomaga-Allen and Josh Floo both scored in the first half to give the hosts' hope. Advertisement It was a slugging start from the tourists, who made nine handling errors in the first half, before they hit their formidable stride after the break. Skipper Maro Itoje celebrated his return with a try upon his return to the starting line-up. Tommy Freeman grabbed two tries and Andrew Porter, Duhan van der Merwe, Jac Morgan, Huw Jones and Gary Ringrose all also crossed as the Lions disappointed those in the 46,435 crowd at Brisbane's Lang Park who were hoping for an upset. Itoje was rested for the match against the Western Force last weekend, but produced a statement performance in the second row. Additional reporting by Reuters.

Owen Farrell set for British and Irish Lions call-up as Elliot Daly injury replacement

Flying out: Owen Farrell is poised to join up with the British and Irish Lions squad in Australia (Adam Davy/PA Wire) Owen Farrell is set for a sensational late call-up to the British and Irish Lions squad during their tour of Australia. The former England captain's addition by father and head coach Andy Farrell is expected to be confirmed on Thursday, ahead of the official squad announcement for Saturday's clash with the New South Wales Waratahs in Sydney. Advertisement Owen Farrell will be named as a replacement for Saracens team-mate Elliot Daly, who was injured during the Lions' 52-12 thrashing of the Queensland Reds in Brisbane on Wednesday. Daly was drafted into the team late at Suncorp Stadium to start at full-back after an illness suffered by Hugo Keenan, only just recovered from a calf problem, but was forced off in the second half after sustaining an injury to his forearm while attempting to make a tackle. The versatile England back looked in considerable pain as he received initial treatment on the pitch and then had the area heavily iced on the bench. Daly subsequently underwent an X-ray and reports on Thursday claimed that he had suffered a suspected broken arm. Advertisement He would become the second player ruled out of the remainder of the tour in a matter of days after Wales scrum-half Tomos Williams flew home following a hamstring injury suffered while scoring his second try in Saturday's opener against the Western Force in Perth, with Scotland's Ben White drafted in as a replacement. Like Williams, the injury to Daly is significant for the Lions after both players stated strong early claims for involvement against Australia in the three-Test series that starts in Brisbane on July 19. Advertisement Andy Farrell appears poised to replace Daly with son Owen, who missed out on selection for the initial 38-man touring squad after a disappointing, injury-plagued lone season in France with Racing 92. However, there remained plenty of speculation that the 33-year-old - who received a great reception from Lions fans while on punditry duties for Sky Sports during the 1888 Cup loss to Argentina in Dublin - could be called up at a later date. Farrell's significant experience and positional versatility - he can play either at fly-half or in the centres - made him a strong candidate for involvement, having earned 112 England caps and previously been involved in each of the Lions tours of 2013, 2017 and 2021 under Warren Gatland, making 19 appearances and starting every Test of the drawn series in New Zealand eight years ago. Farrell recently returned to Saracens - where he previously spent 16 years - on a two-year contract after only a year in France, while he has not played for England since stepping back from international rugby in the aftermath of the 2023 World Cup in order to 'prioritise his and his family's mental wellbeing'.
