Man held at Pune Airport for smuggling hydroponic weed worth Rs 10.5 crore
Customs officials have identified the passenger as Abhinay Amarnath Yadav.
A press release issued on Friday stated that Yadav landed at the Pune International Airport from Bangkok by an Indigo Flight on Thursday.
Customs officials intercepted him at the Airport. During searches, 10.47 kilograms of hydroponic weed estimated at Rs 10.5 crores in illicit market, was seized from his possession, the press release stated.
An offence was lodged against the accused Yadav under sections of the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
A court remanded him to judicial custody today. Further investigation is on to know from where he procured the marijuana and whether he is part of any larger drugs smuggling racket.
Last week, in a joint operation, the Military Intelligence (MI) unit of the Indian Army's Southern Command and anti-narcotics cell of the Pune city police had arrested two persons in possession of Mephedrone.
Police have identified the suspects as Abhinav Pradip Gupta (22) of Lakshmi Parvati society in Shivane and Irshad Iftiqar Shaikh (27) of Parge Nagar, Kondhwa.
Police said 8.28 grams of 'OG Kush'estimated at Rs 82,800 was also allegedly seized from Gupta, who is a criminal on police record.

Kerala nuns held in Chhattisgarh for alleged religious conversion, bishops' group calls case ‘false'
Two nuns from Kerala and a man were arrested at the Durg railway station in Chhattisgarh on Saturday for alleged human trafficking and religious conversion, The News Minute reported. The nuns – Preeti Mary and Vandana Francis – are members of the Assisi Sisters of Mary Immaculate, a congregation under the Syro-Malabar Church in Alappuzha district's Cherthala town and were working at a hospital in Agra, Mathrubhumi reported. The two nuns and the man, identified as Sukhman Mandavi, were accompanying three women from Chhattisgarh's Narayanpur district. Sebastian Poomattam, vicar general of the Raipur Archdiocese, told The News Minute that the nuns were taking the women to Agra where they had been offered jobs of kitchen helpers at a convent. 'They had the consent letters from their parents and were all above 18 years of age,' he added. While at the railway station, a ticket examiner questioned the group on the platform. 'The girls and one man entered the platform where the nuns were waiting,' The News Minute quoted Poomattam as saying. 'The examiner asked about their tickets, and they said the nuns had them.' The vicar general claimed that the examiner informed members of the Hindutva group Bajrang Dal about the situation and that the outfit's members 'arrived in large numbers within minutes'. The police detained the nuns, the man and the three women. The Bajrang Dal vigilantes protested at the police station and demanded the registration of a first information report against the nuns, The News Minute reported. The nuns and Mandavi were remanded to judicial custody till August 8. They were charged under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita pertaining to human trafficking and sections of Chhattisgarh Religious Freedom Act. The three women were taken to a government-run shelter home. Unidentified police officers told the Hindustan Times that the nuns were allegedly taking the women to Agra with the promise of 'good facilities and a monthly salary of Rs 8,000 to Rs 10,000'. The police had reached the railway station based on a tip-off from members of the Bajrang Dal, the officers were quoted as having said. 'When questioned, the women said that initially they were told they would be offered jobs within Chhattisgarh, but when they reached Durg, they were told that the nuns had come to take them to Agra,' the newspaper quoted the officers as saying. Commenting on the incident, the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India alleged that a ' false ' case had been filed against the nuns under the influence of Hindutva groups, Onmanorama reported. The bishops' conference sought the intervention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the matter. Kerala CM seeks PM's intervention Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Sunday also sought Modi's intervention in ensuring justice to the two nuns, PTI reported. In a letter to the prime minister, the chief minister said that Mary and Francis were arrested when they had gone to receive women who were coming to work in their convent. Family members of the two nuns have claimed that they had not been able to communicate with them after they were taken into custody, he added. Vijayan requested the prime minister to intervene in the matter and ensure transparent and fair proceedings, PTI reported. Alappuzha MP KC Venugopal said on Sunday that attacks on minorities had seen 'a rampant increase under BJP-ruled states, be it Chhattisgarh, Odisha or MP [Madhya Pradesh]'. The Congress leader said that he had written to the Union home ministry and Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai demanding strict punishment against the culprits and the urgent need to uphold the Constitution 'so that fundamental rights of minorities are not threatened under their rule'. 'The latest attacks by Bajrang Dal goons on 2 Catholic nuns in Durg, Chhattisgarh point to a tacit support for such hate crimes from the ruling establishment,' Venugopal said on social media. In his letter to the home ministry and the Chhattisgarh chief minister, Venugopal said that it was 'deeply disturbing that self proclaimed vigilantes can instigate communal tension and make baseless accusations of conversion and trafficking without any legal foundation'. He added: 'Despite clear documentation and parental consent, the authorities have chosen to keep the nuns and the man in custody, reportedly under political pressure.'

Drug Lab Hidden In A Buffalo Barn: Rajasthan, Maharashtra Police Bust Inter-State Syndicate

In a major crackdown on synthetic drug manufacturing, police teams from Rajasthan, Maharashtra, and the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) joined forces to bust an inter-state drug syndicate operating clandestine labs. The operation began on July 22, 2025, when Barmer district police detected a hidden lab inside a buffalo barn in Village Dholakia. The facility contained large amounts of precursor chemicals like Chloroform, Ammonium Chloride, and Toluene — typically used in the manufacture of Mephedrone. Lab equipment was also seized from the remote location, and two individuals were detained at the site. The NCB's Jodhpur unit soon joined the investigation, helping identify links to Maharashtra. During interrogation, one of the arrested men revealed that a key member of the syndicate hailed from Raigad district in Maharashtra and had transported chemicals and equipment to set up the Barmer lab. This tip-off led Raigad police and NCB Mumbai to swiftly act and detain the suspect. Investigations pointed to a shut factory — M/s Rohan Chemicals in Mahad — that was secretly being used to manufacture synthetic drugs. A raid at the premises resulted in the recovery of 34 kg of powdered Ketamine, 12 litres in liquid form, and a cache of precursor chemicals. Authorities also discovered that the main mastermind was a repeat offender, already under the radar for earlier drug cases handled by the DRI and NCB. The back-to-back raids and coordinated intelligence sharing between police units in Barmer, Raigad, and NCB zones in Jodhpur, Ahmedabad, and Mumbai led to the quick dismantling of the drug network. Investigations are still ongoing, with both Barmer and Raigad police pursuing various leads. This bust comes close on the heels of another similar operation in Sri Ganganagar, where 5 kg of Mephedrone was seized and even science teachers were found involved. To help identify such secret drug-making hubs, NCB has circulated 'red flag indicators" to all state police departments and urges citizens to share drug-related information via the toll-free helpline 1933. Palghar school watchman held for allegedly sexually abusing two minor boys
Police have arrested a 53-year-old security guard of a private school in Maharashtra's Palghar district for allegedly sexually abusing two male students, officials said. The alleged incidents occurred between June 15 and 20, the officials said on Sunday (July 27, 2025). The victims, aged 17 and 15, are students of the same school located in Virar area. "The alleged incidents occurred in the canteen of the school," the Arnala police stated. The accused was arrested on Saturday (July 26, 2025)evening, the police added. "After receiving a complaint from the school's manager, we registered an FIR against the watchman, Raymond Wilson Dias, under section 75 (sexual harassment) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and sections 5, 8 and 12 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act," the Arnala police station official said. Sections 5 of the POCSO Act pertains to penetrative sexual assault. In August 2024, a male sweeper at a school in Badlapur in neighbouring Thane district allegedly sexually abused two four-year-old girls, causing a huge outrage and massive protests. The accused was killed in September last year in the 'retaliatory firing' by police after he allegedly snatched the gun from a policeman in a police vehicle.
