The MOF said in a statement today that raw sugar used in the production of refined sugar would be subject to a five per cent sales tax.
Advertisement 'However, as previously announced, manufacturers such as MSM Malaysia Holdings Bhd are eligible to apply for tax exemption on their raw materials and inputs. 'Hence, there is no reason for any increase in the price of refined sugar — especially since sugar refiners like MSM continue to receive monthly incentives from the government to ensure supply and price stability,' the MOF said. The MOF said this to clarify a statement issued by MSM regarding the impact of the sales tax revision on raw sugar. The ministry said the Madani Government has taken a targeted approach by not imposing taxes on essential goods such as sugar, salt, chicken, eggs, meat, fish, vegetables, cooking oil and rice.
Advertisement 'This is to ensure that the majority of the people will not be affected by the SST revision,' it said. The MOF said sugar refiners and manufacturers in Malaysia can apply to the Royal Malaysian Customs Department for tax exemptions as provided for under Item 1, Column (2), Schedule B of the Sales Tax (Persons Exempt from Payment of Tax) Order. Yesterday, it was reported that national refined sugar producer MSM is reviewing the five per cent extension of SST involving raw sugar and is seeking further clarification from the government to monitor the impact on the prices of regulated goods. According to the MSM group chief executive officer, the retail price of sugar in Malaysia has been capped at RM2.85 per kilogramme since 2011, despite the global raw sugar price increasing in recent years. He said that if the tax was imposed on raw sugar, the country's refined sugar producers could pass on the cost to the industry. 'However, we cannot do that for sugar because it is under price control,' he said, adding that 75 to 80 per cent of MSM's production costs come from raw sugar. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Sabah prioritises agriculture as key driver of economic growth

Published on: Sunday, August 03, 2025 Published on: Sun, Aug 03, 2025 Text Size: Anwar and Hajiji with others visit one of the booths. - Pic by CMD KOTA KINABALU: The State Government remains committed to strengthening Sabah's agriculture sector as a key engine of growth and food security. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said agriculture contributed RM12.2 billion or 14.5 per cent to Sabah's GDP, making it the third largest sector in the state economy. He said this during the closing ceremony of the National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen Day (HPPNK) 2025 at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) here on Sunday, officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. To boost food resilience, Hajiji said Sabah had revived the Sabah Rice and Padi Board last year with the aim of raising rice self-sufficiency to 30 per cent by 2026 and 60 per cent by 2030. He highlighted the role of technology such as the Internet of Things and smart farming in modernising agriculture and attracting younger generations to the sector. So far, Sabah's 15 Permanent Food Production Parks (TKPM) have produced over 1,494 metric tonnes of food, generating more than RM4.32 million in returns. Sabah is also developing a RM360 million tuna and deep-sea fish landing port in Kota Kinabalu, expected to land 50,000 tonnes of tuna annually and support an estimated RM1.8 billion in economic value each year. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Journalists told to embrace AI

Published on: Sunday, August 03, 2025 Published on: Sun, Aug 03, 2025 By: Crystal E Hermenegildus Text Size: Media practitioners in Sabah pose for a group photo after completing the three-day 'Smart Journalism: AI Tools for Faster, Smarter Reporting' course. Kota Kinabalu: Journalists are urged to embrace artificial intelligence (AI) tools in their daily news reporting tasks to keep up with the demands of today's fast-paced digital world. Director of the Tun Abdul Razak Broadcasting and Information Institute (IPPTAR), Roslan Ariffin, said the ongoing wave of digitalisation requires media practitioners to continuously upgrade their skills and adapt to emerging technologies. 'The media industry is becoming more challenging. Journalists must be capable of adapting to the latest technologies – it's the key to staying relevant and moving forward,' he said when speaking at the closing ceremony of the Smart Journalism: AI Tools for Faster, Smarter Reporting course held here. The three-day course, which began on Tuesday (July 29), was attended by 25 media practitioners from various agencies across Sabah. He said the course covered AI applications for idea generation, drafting, audio transcription, and complex data analysis – all of which are revolutionary tools to enhance news reporting. 'Over the past three days, participants were introduced to a wide range of AI tools designed to make journalism faster, more efficient and impactful. 'This is what IPPTAR aims to provide – spreading knowledge and technology to more media professionals nationwide. 'It's crucial for all journalists to keep learning and improving, especially as the media landscape continues to evolve,' he added. Speaking to reporters after the event, Roslan said IPPTAR is committed to creating more learning opportunities for media practitioners in Sabah to support the growth of the local journalism scene. He said one of the biggest challenges facing the industry today is the spread of fake news. 'We are in an era where misinformation spreads rapidly. As ethical journalists, we must steer clear of false reporting and stay committed to our responsibility as dedicated media professionals. 'Sabah, in particular, is heading into its 17th State Election soon, so reporters are under pressure to cover the news extensively. I urge them to apply all the AI knowledge gained during this course to produce quality, ethical reporting,' he said. The course was facilitated by trainer Irin Putri Azmi. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? RM13 million agreements to develop the agri sector

Published on: Sunday, August 03, 2025 Published on: Sun, Aug 03, 2025 Text Size: Arthur (centre) with signatories involved in the signing of agreements. KOTA KINABALU: A total of RM13 million in agreements were sealed through three Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) in an effort to develop the agriculture sector and enhance the country's food security. The MoUs were signed between the Keningau Area Farmers' Organisation (PPK Keningau) and Absolute Moringa Sdn Bhd (AM), the Farmers' Organisation Authority (LPP) and Desa Keningau Livestock Industries Sdn Bhd (DKLI), and between LPP and Sawit Kinabalu Farm Products Sdn Bhd (SKFP). Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup, said the first agreement, worth RM10 million, involves collaboration between PPK Keningau and AM in marketing and distributing agricultural inputs to empower the business and supply services of farmers' organisations for both members and non-members in Sabah. The second agreement, valued at RM3 million, was signed between LPP and DKLI to carry out a corn grain planting project, aimed at boosting local corn production through a corporate approach and technology transfer. 'I was informed the project will begin soon. It has long-term impact, particularly in reducing our dependency on imported corn grain used as livestock feed, which would indirectly increase supply and lower farming costs. 'The third MoU between LPP and SKFP involves technical cooperation for the implementation of an integrated oil palm-cattle breeding project. 'Although the project has no monetary value, it serves to optimise land use for integrated livestock farming under several high-impact initiatives,' he said after the MoU ceremony involving LPP in conjunction with the National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen's Day celebration. Arthur said the collaborations are expected to bring significant benefits, especially to local communities. 'These high-impact projects reflect strong cooperation between the Government and private sector in driving agricultural growth and enhancing food security. 'At the same time, by increasing the production of resources like corn grain, we can reduce import dependency, improve economic outcomes and make livestock farming more accessible and cost-effective for local farmers,' he added. He said the Government-private sector partnerships are important to ensure that the economic spillover reaches nearby communities. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
