Kota Kinabalu: Journalists are urged to embrace artificial intelligence (AI) tools in their daily news reporting tasks to keep up with the demands of today's fast-paced digital world. Director of the Tun Abdul Razak Broadcasting and Information Institute (IPPTAR), Roslan Ariffin, said the ongoing wave of digitalisation requires media practitioners to continuously upgrade their skills and adapt to emerging technologies. 'The media industry is becoming more challenging. Journalists must be capable of adapting to the latest technologies – it's the key to staying relevant and moving forward,' he said when speaking at the closing ceremony of the Smart Journalism: AI Tools for Faster, Smarter Reporting course held here. The three-day course, which began on Tuesday (July 29), was attended by 25 media practitioners from various agencies across Sabah. He said the course covered AI applications for idea generation, drafting, audio transcription, and complex data analysis – all of which are revolutionary tools to enhance news reporting. 'Over the past three days, participants were introduced to a wide range of AI tools designed to make journalism faster, more efficient and impactful. 'This is what IPPTAR aims to provide – spreading knowledge and technology to more media professionals nationwide. 'It's crucial for all journalists to keep learning and improving, especially as the media landscape continues to evolve,' he added. Speaking to reporters after the event, Roslan said IPPTAR is committed to creating more learning opportunities for media practitioners in Sabah to support the growth of the local journalism scene. He said one of the biggest challenges facing the industry today is the spread of fake news. 'We are in an era where misinformation spreads rapidly. As ethical journalists, we must steer clear of false reporting and stay committed to our responsibility as dedicated media professionals. 'Sabah, in particular, is heading into its 17th State Election soon, so reporters are under pressure to cover the news extensively. I urge them to apply all the AI knowledge gained during this course to produce quality, ethical reporting,' he said. The course was facilitated by trainer Irin Putri Azmi. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Ringgit strengthens against US dollar amid US rate cut expectations
Published on: Monday, August 04, 2025 Published on: Mon, Aug 04, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: At 8 am, the local currency rose to 4.2350/2550 against the greenback, up from Friday's close of 4.2750/2815. Kuala Lumpur: THE ringgit opened stronger against the US dollar on Monday as renewed expectations of a Federal Reserve rate cut emerged following weaker-than-expected US labour market data. At 8 am, the local currency rose to 4.2350/2550 against the greenback, up from Friday's close of 4.2750/2815. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid attributed the ringgit's rebound to disappointing US Non-farm Payroll (NFP) figures. The US Bureau of Labour Statistics reported only 73,000 jobs added in July, well below market forecasts of 110,000. 'The weaker labour market strengthens the case for a Fed rate cut in September,' said Mohd Afzanizam. 'The US Dollar Index (DXY) has already dropped to 98.708 points, while the 2-year US Treasury yield fell sharply by 25 basis points to 3.69 per cent last Friday.' He added that the ringgit, which depreciated by 0.22 per cent on Friday, could trade between 4.26 and 4.27 today. However, the local currency weakened against other major currencies, slipping against the Japanese yen, British pound, and euro. In contrast, the ringgit strengthened against regional currencies, rising against the Singapore dollar but dipping slightly against the Thai baht. It also gained against the Philippine peso and Indonesian rupiah. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Published on: Monday, August 04, 2025 Published on: Mon, Aug 04, 2025 By: Azmie Lim Text Size: Dr Meilina with winners of the Sawit Run during Lahad Datu MPOB Open Day. Kota Kinabalu: The Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) has reaffirmed its leadership role in steering the national palm oil industry towards greater productivity and sustainability, despite increasing global challenges. MPOB Biology and Sustainability Research Division Director, Dr Meilina Ong Abdullah, said issues such as climate change, the need for sustainable farming practices, and intensifying international competition will make the path ahead more demanding for the industry. 'As such, we must constantly think ahead and innovate. MPOB is committed to leading this effort – not only to maintain productivity but to ensure the industry remains responsible to both the environment and society,' she said, when officiating MPOB Open Day held in conjunction with the Silver Jubilee celebration of the Lahad Datu MPOB Research Station, recently. Also present were MPOB Finance and Procurement Unit Head Mohd Azhar Abdul Rahim, Lahad Datu MPOB Research Station Head Muhammad Ansri Raydien, and Lahad Datu MPOB Plantation Manager Amirul Ashraf Alias. Dr Meilina said MPOB faced many hurdles since its establishment in 2000, but with continued support from all quarters, it has emerged as the key agency driving the development of Malaysia's palm oil sector. She said MPOB remains focused on ensuring the long-term viability and global competitiveness of Malaysian palm oil through ongoing research, technology development, and direct support to smallholders. On the Open Day celebration, themed 'Palm Oil for All,' Dr Meilina said it served as a platform to connect MPOB with the public. 'This is a valuable opportunity for the community to see firsthand how Mpob operates, what we do, and how our work contributes to everyday life. 'With today's activities and programmes, the public can engage directly with our experts,' she said. She expressed hope that continued cooperation from all stakeholders, including the local community, would support a brighter future for the palm oil industry, Lahad Datu, and the nation. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
