Purdue women's basketball adds 2025 Southern Conference Freshman of the Year
Smith made her announcement through her Instagram account. The soon-to-be sophomore helped the Spartans advance to the NCAA Tournament last season after finishing 25-7, beating Chattanooga 64-57 to capture the Southern Conference Tournament title.

UNC Greensboro entered the NCAA Tournament as the No. 16 seed and lost to the JuJu Watkins-led USC Trojans, 71-25.
Smith becomes the third Purdue addition from the transfer portal after former Arkansas standout Kiki Smith (no relation) joined Purdue on Saturday afternoon.
A native of Roswell, Georgia, Smith averaged 10.9 points, 3.9 rebounds and was named the Southern Conference Sixth Woman of the Year and Freshman of the Year to end the 2024-25 season.
It's been an active Easter weekend for Purdue with the addition of both Smith guards.

The Smith from Topeka, Kansas and former Razorback shot 40.6% from 3-point range, started in 22 of 27 games during her sophomore year with the Razorbacks.

Nya and Kiki Smith are joined by Purdue's first transfer portal arrival, Taylor Feldman from Northern Arizona. Feldman averaged 16.4 points, 3.9 assists and three rebounds per game, including 40.9% from the field, 38.3% from 3-point range and 80.4% from the free throw line and was named All Big Sky Conference first team as a junior last season.
The Boilermakers will also the return of Madison Layden-Zay, who starred from 2020-21 to 2023-24 before taking a year off last season. Layden-Zay is eligible to play a grad season having with the Boilermakers through COVID.

Purdue will also have experience in the paint as well with the returns of incoming sophomore forwards Lana McCarthy and Kendall Puryear. Puryear averaged 7.2 points and 3.7 rebounds last season primarily off the bench with one start, while McCarthy averaged 6.4 points and 4.8 rebounds in 26 starts.

Junior guard McKenna Layden is the lone returning guard for Purdue from 2024-25 after making nine starts, averaging 4.6 points and 4.2 rebounds.
Along with the transfer portal talent and reemergence of Layden-Zay sees the incoming 2025 class led by 4-star recruits guard Keona Douwstra of Netherlands and 6-foot-7 center Avery Gordon.

Guardians pitcher Luis Ortiz placed on paid leave amid MLB investigation
Cleveland Guardians pitcher Luis Ortiz was placed on non-disciplinary paid leave just hours before he was expected to take the mound against the Chicago Cubs on Thursday, MLB announced. The nature of the league's investigation was not immediately known. Ortiz, in his first season with the Guardians, will remain on paid leave through the end of the All-Star break due to an MLB investigation, the league said, adding that it will not comment further until their probe is complete. The Guardians also released a statement following MLB's announcement. "The Guardians have been notified by Major League Baseball that Luis Ortiz has been placed on leave per an agreement with the Players Association due to an ongoing league investigation. "The Guardians are not permitted to comment further at this time, and will respect the league's confidential investigative process." The 26-year-old right-handed pitcher was acquired by Cleveland in a trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates that also included Michael Kennedy and Josh Hartle in exchange for Spencer Horwitz. In 16 starts with the Guardians, Ortiz is 4-9 with a 4.36 ERA and 96 strikeouts. His losses are tied for the most in the American League currently. After getting scratched from Thursday's lineup, Cleveland called up left-hander Joey Cantillo, who is 1-0 with one save and a 3.81 ERA in 21 appearances this season. Sharks claim veteran defenseman Nick Leddy off waivers from Blues
The San Jose Sharks claimed St. Louis Blues defenseman Nick Leddy on waivers Thursday, per The Athletic's Chris Johnston, gaining an experienced defenseman and providing salary-cap relief to the Blues on a player who had been buried on the depth chart. Leddy has one season left on a four-year, $16 million contract ($4 million average annual value). The Blues are now off the hook for Leddy's $3 million salary and $4 million cap hit in 2025-26. He played seven seasons for the New York Islanders after that, making two trips to the Stanley Cup playoffs' semifinal round. He then played part of one season for the Detroit Red Wings before being traded to the Blues. Overall, Leddy has played 1,042 regular-season games in the NHL. The 6-foot, 205-pound defenseman has 75 goals and 416 points in the regular season. He's played 137 postseason games and has eight goals and 39 points. Leddy played in just 31 games with the Blues last season because of an undisclosed injury. St. Louis traded for Logan Mailloux on Tuesday, effectively replacing him on the roster for 2025-26.
