Burglary suspect killed in heist believed to have been shot by accomplice
A burglary suspect who was shot and killed in a Lynwood home Thursday morning is believed to have been shot by an accomplice when they were startled by a resident, officials said.
Deputies were called to the 11000 block of Linden Street after receiving a call of a burglary in progress, officials with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said in a statement.
When deputies arrived, they found a man who had been shot and died at the scene.
Homicide detectives say they believe the man was one of about five men who entered the home at 1:26 a.m. wearing dark clothing. Authorities said the men were surprised by a resident in the home and ran from the location, but one of them shot a firearm inside the house, striking one of the suspects.
The identity of the deceased man was not released.
The suspects were spotted running north on Linden Street, officials said.

California woman who masterminded hair-mogul husband's murder sentenced to life without parole
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A woman who masterminded the killing of her husband, an internationally known hairdresser and beauty company executive, at their Los Angeles home eight years ago was sentenced Monday to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Monica Sementilli, 53, was convicted in April of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder for the 2017 stabbing death of Fabio Sementilli in their backyard in the upscale Woodlands Hills neighborhood. He was found by their daughter in a pool of blood with multiple wounds to his face, jawline, neck, chest and thigh. Prosecutors said Monica Sementilli conspired with her lover and former racquetball coach, Robert Baker, to kill her 49-year-old husband for a $1.6 million insurance policy. Baker, now 63, pleaded no contest in July 2023 to murder and conspiracy charges. He is serving life without the possibility of parole. Baker testified at her trial that the mother of two had nothing to do with the plot to kill her husband. 'I murdered him because I wanted her,' Baker told the court. Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Ronald S. Coen rejected a defense bid to have Sementilli sentenced to 25 years to life, calling her the 'mastermind in this conspiracy to commit murder,' the Los Angeles Times reported. Coen said Baker, who carried out the attack, 'did not have the intelligence to plan the brutal, well-thought-out slaughter.' The Canadian-born Fabio Sementilli worked for decades as a trendsetting hair stylist and served as vice president of education for beauty products giant Coty Inc.

60-year-old vanishes on mountain hike in forest, CA cops say. Now a frantic search
A hiker vanished while on a mountain trek in a California forest, and now a frantic search is underway, deputies said. Monica Reza, 60, was last seen 'hiking near the Mount Waterman area' in the San Bernardino Mountains in Angeles National Forest the morning of June 22, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Crescenta Valley Sheriff's Station said in a Facebook post. Deputies said they and search and rescue crews from across Southern California have 'worked around the clock' searching for Reza. 'We are deeply concerned about the whereabouts of Monica, who has now been missing for over 24 hours,' Acting Captain Ryan Vienna said in the post. 'We have deployed numerous resources, including Air Rescue 5 and other technologies, to aid in the search.' Rescuers with the Ventura County East Valley Search and Rescue Team said they joined the search for Reza on Monday, June 23, leaving for the forest at about 5 a.m. to attend a 7 a.m. briefing, according to a Facebook post. 'Hopefully Ms. Reza will be found today, if not, we will be back out tomorrow as well,' rescuers said. Reza, who has gray hair and brown eyes, is described as standing 4 feet, 11 inches tall and weighing about 100 pounds, the sheriff's department said in a news release. At the time of her disappearance, she was 'wearing a red long sleeve shirt, green hiking pants, and hiking shoes,' deputies said.
