India sees 53 pc drop in Naxal violence over past decade
New Delhi [India], June 9 (ANI): In a significant development towards achieving a Naxal-free India, there has been a 53 per cent drop in the incidents of Naxal violence over the last ten years between 2014 and 2024, compared to the decade before, government data suggests.
Between 2004 and 2014, the data mentions, there were 16,463 incidents of Naxal violence. However, from 2014 to 2024, the number dropped to 7,744.
As per the officials in the security establishment, the reduction in Naxal violence reflects 'the success of intensified counter-insurgency operations and strategic policies by security forces.'
The impact has also been seen in the number of casualties, as the deaths of security personnel fell by a dramatic 73 per cent, from 1,851 in 2004-2014 to 509 in 2014-2024. Similarly, civilian deaths declined by 70 per cent, dropping from 4,766 to 1,495 over the same period, 2024-2025.
The data also show that the trend continued strongly into 2024 and 2025. In 2024 alone, 290 Naxals were neutralised, 1,090 were arrested, and 881 surrendered. Among those neutralised were 18 top Naxal leaders, a major blow to the insurgent command structure.
In 2025 (till now), 226 Naxals have been killed, 418 arrested (including 2 Central Committee Members), and 896 have surrendered.
These figures highlight the continuing momentum of the government's efforts against Naxalism or Left-Wing Extremism (LWE). The coordinated actions of security forces and the surrender policy seem to be yielding long-term peace dividends in previously affected regions.
The government's aggressive anti-Naxal operations over the past few years have dealt a decisive blow to the insurgency's top leadership structure.
A total of 18 top Naxal leaders, many of them Central Committee Members (CCMs) and Politburo Members (PBMs), have been neutralised between 2019 and 2025. Many of these figures carried heavy cash bounties, ranging from Rs 50 lakh to Rs 1.47 crore.
The most high-profile eliminations among them are Rukla Srinivas alias Ramtra (CCM) - reward of Rs 1.4 crore - neutralised in 2019; Buryari Sudhakar (CCM) - neutralised in 2019; Prashant Bose alias Kisan Da (PBM) - reward of Rs 1.47 crore - neutralised in 2021; Sheela Marandi (CCM) - neutralised in 2021; B.G. Krishnamurthy (CCM) - neutralised in 2021; Milind Teltumbde alias Deepak (CCM) - reward of Rs 50 lakh - neutralised in 2021; Yapa Narayan Rao alias Haribhushan (CCM) - neutralised in 2021; and Akkiraju Haragopal alias RK (CCM) - neutralised in 2021.
Besides, Vijay Arya, alias Jaspal (CCM), Mitlesh Mehta, alias Mitlesh Prasad (CCM), and Arun Kumar Bhattacharya, alias Kanchan (CCM), were neutralised in 2022.
Kudakam Sudarshan alias Anand (PBM) - carrying a reward of Rs 1 crore, Pramod Mishra (PBM) and Sanjay Deepak Rao (CCM) were neutralised in 2023.
In a major symbolic and operational breakthrough, Basav Raju, the General Secretary of CPI-Maoist, was neutralised in 2025 under the continuing offensive operations. With a bounty of over Rs 1 crore, Raju was the highest-ranking Maoist leader killed so far and a key ideologue behind the group's armed struggle.
Chalapathi Pratap Reddy (CCM), another top commander carrying a Rs 1 crore reward, was also eliminated in 2025, marking a significant collapse of Maoist central leadership.
These high-value neutralisations were carried out under coordinated intelligence-led operations, often with the support of local informants and sophisticated tracking techniques. (ANI)

The Indian companies have invested $2 billion in around 900 projects,' the Prime Minister noted. He described the India-Ghana partnership as one built on common principles and shared struggles for independence. ‘Human sacrifice at Kamakhya': False claim lands TV anchor, Raja Raghuvanshi's cousin in trouble with Guwahati police
A news TV anchor has landed in trouble with the police over a false claim of 'nar bali (human sacrifice)' at the Kamakhya temple in Assam, during a live conversation with a cousin of Indore businessman Raja Raghuvanshi, who was murdered allegedly by his wife and her lover during their honeymoon in Meghalaya earlier this year. (PTI File) The Guwahati Police Crime Branch summoned the news anchor along with Shrishti Raghuvanshi, a female cousin of Raja Raghuvanshi, over the alleged defamatory statement about the revered Hindu shrine, news agency ANI reported. The anchor and the channel were not named in the agency report. After the FIR was filed on charges of hurting religious sentiments, both the anchor and Raja Raghuvanshi's cousin were asked to appear before the investigation officer on June 23 and 24, but they have not done so till date, according to Ankur Jain, Joint Police Commissioner, Guwahati City Police. What happened on air The anchor, reported to be from a prominent English news channel, was interviewing Shrishti about Raja's initial disappearance in Meghalaya – the murder came to light later – when the anchor claimed that human sacrifice was carried out at as a practice at the temple in Meghalaya's neighbouring state of Assam. Shrishti purportedly agreed with the anchor's remarks during the live broadcast, the police said according to a report by NDTV. As outrage followed the false claims and the apparent suggestion that Raja may have been 'sacrificed', the channel and Shrishti apologised for a 'complete error of judgment'. Sonam and Raja Raghuvanshi got married on May 11 and went for their honeymoon to Meghalaya just days later. The FIR said the anchor and Shrishti could not cite any source, religious authority or historical validation for their false claim. The anchor clearly presented the information as fact, it added. Case dominated headlines The murder of Raja Raghuvanshi made headlines for weeks as police investigation said Raja, 29, was murdered by his wife Sonam, 24, just days after they had left hometown Indore for their honeymoon in Meghalaya in May. Sonam, her alleged lover Raj and their accomplices killed Raja, police found. After an intense search for Sonam, who was reported missing while Raja's body was found, she resurfaced and surrendered. Raj and the three accomplices had already been arrested by then.

New Delhi: Leaders of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) on Wednesday strongly criticised the ruling Mahayuti alliance and called for an apology from Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis following a Special Investigation Team's (SIT) submission to the Bombay High Court stating there was no foul play in the death of Disha Salian, the former manager of late actor Sushant Singh Rajput. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of maligning Aaditya Thackeray with baseless allegations linking him to Salian's death. Speaking to ANI, Raut said, 'Devendra Fadnavis must apologise. However, the Mumbai Police's affidavit submitted to the Bombay High Court rejected these claims, stating there was no evidence of sexual or physical assault. The police affidavit, filed by Senior Inspector Shailendra Nagarkar of Malvani Police Station, indicated that Salian died by suicide, jumping from her apartment window of her own volition. It cited that she was under 'tremendous mental stress' due to family disputes and failed business ventures, and was inebriated at the time of her death. Her fiancé, who was present on the night of the incident, also ruled out any foul play. In March, Satish Salian approached the Bombay High Court seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe and a First Information Report (FIR) against Aaditya Thackeray. Subsequently, BJP MLA Nitesh Rane demanded Thackeray's resignation and criminal action against him. Aaditya Thackeray has challenged the petition, terming it 'false, frivolous, and motivated' and has sought a hearing before any orders are passed. The Bombay High Court is yet to decide on Satish Salian's plea for a CBI investigation.
