UMT student killed in motorcycle crash at Perasing R&R exit
Kemaman district police chief Superintendent Mohd Razi Rosli said the incident occurred at the Perasing R&R exit heading towards Kuantan, involving a Yamaha Y16ZR motorcycle believed to have skidded on its own.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the two students were travelling from Kuala Terengganu to Kuantan.
"The accident is believed to have happened as they were taking a turn into the R&R area, when the motorcycle ridden by Siti Ain Balqis Hamdan, 23, went out of control and crashed into the left-side road barrier.
"The rider was flung to the left side of the road, while the pillion rider, Nur Intan Syafiera Batrisya Hamzah, 22, fell onto the roadway.
"The rider died at the scene and her body was sent to Kemaman Hospital's forensics unit for post-mortem," he said.
The pillion rider, who sustained serious injuries to the head, body and legs, was rushed to Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital (HTAA) in Kuantan for further treatment.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
The deceased was from Kampung Puah Lembah, Jalan Sungai Batu Batu 3 3/4, Gombak, Kuala Lumpur, while her friend is from Kampung Mantin Dalam, Negeri Sembilan.
Meanwhile, in a statement, UMT said its Student Affairs Division (Hepa) would provide RM1,000 in bereavement aid, RM1,500 for funeral arrangements (including transport and burial costs), and RM10,000 under the Student Protection Scheme for the next-of-kin of the deceased.
For the injured student, Hepa is extending RM500 in immediate assistance under the Bingkas Kasih aid, while medical expenses of up to RM2,500 will be covered through the university's hospital guarantee letter.

Seven injured as express bus crashes into height barrier
KUALA LUMPUR: Seven people, including the driver of an express bus, were injured after the vehicle crashed into a height restriction barrier at Jalan Mutiara, Putra Mahkota, late Thursday night. The incident occurred at about 11.25pm along a route near the Negri Sembilan-Selangor border. Kajang police chief, Assistant Commissioner Naazron Abdul Yusof, said the bus was en route from Kuantan to Negeri Sembilan and Melaka, carrying 22 people - 19 adults, three children, and the driver. "Preliminary investigations revealed that the 62-year-old driver was using the Waze navigation app and failed to notice the height restriction barrier along the route. "This caused the bus to crash into the metal barrier, resulting in extensive damage to the front and upper sections of the vehicle," he said in a statement today. Naazron said seven people, including the driver, sustained injuries in the incident. Four victims were sent to Hospital Serdang, while the remaining three were treated at Hospital Tuanku Ja'afar in Seremban. The rest of the passengers were picked up by relatives and friends who rushed to the scene. The case is being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for careless and inconsiderate driving. Upon conviction, the offence carries a fine of between RM5,000 and RM10,000 or up to 12 months' imprisonment, or both. Naazron reminded motorists to stay alert and drive responsibly, especially when using navigation apps. "We urge all road users to pay close attention to road signs and height restrictions, and to drive with full care and consideration at all times," he said. Bus driver didn't see the overhead barrier because he was using Waze, say cops
BANGI: The 62-year-old bus driver who accidentally crashed the vehicle into an overhead height barrier at Jalan Mutiara, Putra Mahkota, claims he did not see the structure as he was using Waze. Kajang OCPD Asst Comm Naazron Abdul Yusof said the impact of the crash left the express bus stuck underneath the barrier. "The driver was not aware of the barrier when the incident occurred, and he was also using Waze for navigation. "The bus was from Kuantan, Pahang and on the way to Negri Sembilan and Melaka," he said when contacted on Saturday (July 5). The bus was ferrying 22 passengers, including three children, he added. "Seven people, including the driver, were injured. Four of them were sent to Hospital Serdang while three others were sent to Hospital Tunku Jaafar, Seremban. "Passengers who were not injured were picked up by their family members at the scene of the action," he added.
