Seven injured as express bus crashes into height barrier
The incident occurred at about 11.25pm along a route near the Negri Sembilan-Selangor border.
Kajang police chief, Assistant Commissioner Naazron Abdul Yusof, said the bus was en route from Kuantan to Negeri Sembilan and Melaka, carrying 22 people - 19 adults, three children, and the driver.
"Preliminary investigations revealed that the 62-year-old driver was using the Waze navigation app and failed to notice the height restriction barrier along the route.
"This caused the bus to crash into the metal barrier, resulting in extensive damage to the front and upper sections of the vehicle," he said in a statement today.
Naazron said seven people, including the driver, sustained injuries in the incident.
Four victims were sent to Hospital Serdang, while the remaining three were treated at Hospital Tuanku Ja'afar in Seremban.
The rest of the passengers were picked up by relatives and friends who rushed to the scene.
The case is being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for careless and inconsiderate driving. Upon conviction, the offence carries a fine of between RM5,000 and RM10,000 or up to 12 months' imprisonment, or both.
Naazron reminded motorists to stay alert and drive responsibly, especially when using navigation apps.
"We urge all road users to pay close attention to road signs and height restrictions, and to drive with full care and consideration at all times," he said.
Members of the public with information on the incident are urged to contact investigating officer Inspector Narolhisyam Endi at 012-589 7115.
