Zohran Mamdani Confirmed As Democratic Candidate For New York Mayor
New York City: Rising star of the American left Zohran Mamdani is now officially the Democratic candidate for mayor of New York City, according to official results released Tuesday. The 33-year-old self-declared democratic socialist defeated his nearest rival by a strong margin, winning 56 percent to former governor Andrew Cuomo's 44 percent, in the third round of vote counting. Neither candidate won a majority of votes in the June 25 primary vote, prompting election officials to begin a process of eliminating lower-ranking candidates and recounting. But after Mamdani earned 43 percent outright, Cuomo -- aiming for a comeback after a sex scandal -- conceded defeat the night of the vote, a stunning outcome for the Democrats. Staunchly pro-Israel Cuomo led in polls for most of the race, with massive name recognition as well as support from powerful centrist figures including former president Bill Clinton. "Democrats spoke in a clear voice, delivering a mandate for an affordable city, a politics of the future, and a leader unafraid to fight back against rising authoritarianism," Mamdani said Tuesday. Born in Uganda of South Asian parents, New York state assemblyman Mamdani would be the first Muslim mayor of the heavily Democratic city if he wins the general election in November. Polling currently shows him ahead of current Mayor Eric Adams and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa for the November vote. Adams was elected in 2021 as a Democrat but is running as an independent. Mamdani and others have accused the mayor of allowing the Trump administration to conduct immigration raids in exchange for burying federal corruption charges against Adams. Cuomo is still weighing a possible run as an independent, which could further complicate the race. The mayoral contest has catapulted Mamdani from an unknown to the national stage, with Democrats debating if he is too far-left or just what is needed to beat back President Donald Trump's MAGA agenda. Asked on NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday if he is a communist, Mamdani responded with a negative but added, "I don't think that we should have billionaires." "Frankly, I've heard he's a total nut job," Trump said Tuesday morning. "I think the people in New York are crazy because they go this route." 'Will only get worse...': Trump makes BIG announcement on Israel-Hamas war, warns Hamas that they should...
Days after Iran Israel war, Trump makes big move, decides to ink mega deal with Tehran worth Rs..., plans to remove..., Israel says... US President Donald Trump announced that Israel has accepted a proposal for a 60-day ceasefire in Gaza. He warned Hamas that they should accept the deal before things get worse. Trump shared this news just days before Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to visit the White House on Monday. Trump is preparing to host Netanyahu himself and is putting pressure on both sides i.e. Israel and Hamas to agree on a ceasefire and a hostage deal to bring an end to the war in Gaza. The president's declaration comes amid rising international pressure to bring an end to the Israel-Hamas conflict, which has resulted in thousands of casualties and humanitarian destruction in the region. Here's what Trump said: On his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump wrote, 'My team had a long and positive meeting today with Israeli officials about Gaza. Israel has agreed to the key conditions for a 60-day ceasefire. During this time, we'll work with all sides to try and end the Israel-Hamas war.' He added that Qatar and Egypt will help present the final version of the deal. 'I hope, for the good of the Middle East, that Hamas takes this Deal, because it will not get better — IT WILL ONLY GET WORSE,' Trump warned. Israel's Team in the US Israel's Minister for Strategic Affairs, Ron Dermer, was in Washington on Tuesday. He met top U.S. officials to discuss a possible ceasefire in Gaza, along with talks about Iran and other regional issues. Dermer was expected to hold meetings with U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff. This visit happened at a time when more than 150 global charities and aid groups have demanded an end to a controversial system, backed by the U.S. and Israel, for delivering aid into Gaza. These organizations say the system has caused chaos and deadly violence at aid distribution points, where desperate Palestinians are lining up for food. Trump's role in pushing for peace Donald Trump's announcement is important for another reason—he earlier played a big role in helping end the Iran-Israel conflict. He was the first to publicly say that Iran and Israel had agreed to a ceasefire. Now, he has convinced Israel to agree to a 60-day truce with Hamas in Gaza. The question now is: what will Hamas do? Will it accept the U.S.-backed peace proposal—or reject it and risk further conflict? Hamas willing to release hostages Earlier, Hamas said it will release the rest of the hostages if a deal ends the war, but it will not give up its weapons. Israel, for its part, said the fighting can stop only if Hamas is disarmed and broken up. The conflict began on 7 October 2023 when Hamas fighters entered Israel, killed about 1,200 people and took 251 hostages, according to figures shown by the Israeli govt. Since then, Gaza's health ministry reports that Israeli strikes have killed more than 56,000 Palestinians. The offensive has pushed the whole population from their homes, left many people hungry, and sparked court cases accusing Israel of genocide and war crimes, charges that Israel denies.

Trump Says 'Israel Agrees To 60-Day Ceasefire In Gaza', Urges Hamas To Accept Deal
Last Updated: Donald Trump announced that Israel has agreed to the terms of a 60-day ceasefire in Gaza, urging Hamas to accept the deal or face worsening conditions. Donald Trump on Wednesday said that Israel has agreed to a 60-day ceasefire with Gaza, with the necessary conditions, and that he, along with others, would work to end the war during this period. The US President also urged Hamas to accept the ceasefire deal, saying he hoped for the best for the Middle East. Trump announced the development as he prepares to host Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for talks at the White House next week. 'My Representatives had a long and productive meeting with the Israelis today on Gaza. Israel has agreed to the necessary conditions to finalize the 60 Day CEASEFIRE, during which time we will work with all parties to end the War," Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social. 'The Qataris and Egyptians, who have worked very hard to help bring Peace, will deliver this final proposal," he added. 'I hope, for the good of the Middle East, that Hamas takes this Deal, because it will not get better — IT WILL ONLY GET WORSE" (sic), Trump wrote. The Israel-Hamas was has left more than 56,000 dead in the Palestinian territory, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, which does not differentiate between civilians and combatants in its death count. US officials believe Hamas has been significantly diminished as its centralised command and control capabilities have deteriorated over the course of the nearly 21-month conflict, according to the Associated Press. Israeli Minister for Strategic Affairs, Ron Dermer, was in Washington on Tuesday for talks with senior administration officials to discuss a potential Gaza ceasefire, Iran and other matters. Dermer was expected to meet with Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and special envoy Steve Witkoff. Earlier Tuesday, Trump repeated his hope for forging an Israel-Hamas ceasefire deal next week. Asked if it's time to put pressure on Netanyahu to get a ceasefire deal done, Trump said the Israeli Prime Minister was ready to come to an agreement. 'He wants to," Trump said of Netanyahu in an exchange with reporters while visiting a new immigration detention facility in Florida. 'I think we'll have a deal next week," he said. Talks between Israel and Hamas have repeatedly faltered over a major sticking point – whether the war should end as part of any ceasefire agreement. About 50 hostages remain captive in Gaza, with less than half believed to be alive. Hamas says it is willing to free all the hostages in exchange for a full withdrawal of Israeli troops and an end to the war in Gaza. Israel rejects that offer, saying it will agree to end the war if Hamas surrenders, disarms and goes into exile, something that the group refuses. First Published: July 02, 2025, 06:39 IST
