New Delhi, Jul 22 (PTI) Jagdeep Dhankhar, who stepped down as the vice president citing health reasons, has been keeping unwell, even though he appeared lively and energetic in Rajya Sabha, which he presided over as chairperson.
He was admitted to the AIIMS here for a few days in March, following which he was advised to curtail his trips outside the national capital for a while.
In June, on a visit to Nainital in Uttarakhand, Dhankhar had collapsed at the Kumaon University.
Officials had then said the day was 'unusually hot" and the hall in which he was addressing a gathering was 'stuffy". They said he had fainted briefly, and his personal security officer was quick to hold him.
Earlier this month, on a visit to Kerala, the former vice president was seen being held by his spouse, Sudesh, and an aide as he was walking.
Again, on July 17, Dhankhar felt unwell when he went to Vatika developed by Delhi LG VK Saxena.
It took him a few minutes to recover as his spouse offered him water.
In his resignation letter to President Droupadi Murmu on Monday evening, Dhankhar said he was stepping down with immediate effect to 'prioritise health care".
'To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as Vice President of India, effective immediately, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Constitution," he said.
Dhankhar, 74, assumed office in August 2022 and his tenure was till August 2027. The resignation of Dhankhar, the Rajya Sabha Chairman, came on the first day of the Monsoon session of Parliament. PTI NAB VN VN

Central govt employees can take 30 days leave to take care of elderly parents: Union Minister Jitendra Singh in RS
Central government employees can take leave for up to 30 days due to personal reasons, including taking care of elderly parents, Union Minister of State for Personnel Jitendra Singh said in Rajya Sabha on Thursday. According to the service rules, government employees are entitled to 30 days of leave, which can be used for personal reasons, such as looking after elderly parents. The Union Minister's statement was a response to a question regarding whether there is any provision for government employees to avail leave to take care of their elderly parents. "The Central Civil Services (Leave) Rules, 1972 provides for 30 days of earned leave, 20 days of half pay leave, eight days of casual leave and two days of restricted holiday per annum, apart from other eligible leaves to a Central government employee, which can be availed for any personal reasons, including that of taking care of elderly parents," Singh said in a written reply. The Central Civil Services(Leave) Rules, 1972, took effect from June 1, 1972. These statutory rules regulate the granting of leave to all government employees, except for those covered by separate rules, such as Railway employees and members of All India Services. Under the service rules, there are different kinds of leaves, such as earned leave, half-day leave, commuted leave, leave not due, extraordinary leave, maternity leave, paternity leave, child care leave, study leave, special disability leave, seamen's sick leave, hospital leave, and departmental leave. According to the policy of the Government, leave is credited in advance to the 'Leave Account' of a Government servant twice a year, on January 1 and July 1, respectively. It is debited when leave is taken by the employees. However, there are certain 'Special Kinds of Leave' that are not debited to the leave account. Executive instructions issued by the government from time to time govern holidays such as casual leave, restricted holidays, compensatory off, and special casual leave.

He chose to threaten constitutional body: EC on Rahul's Karnataka claims
Agency: Last Updated: July 24, 2025, 19:15 IST Representational image (Image: News18) New Delhi, Jul 24 (PTI) The Election Commission on Thursday hit out at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's claim that it allowed cheating in a Karnataka constituency and said that besides making 'baseless allegations", the leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha chose to 'threaten" a constitutional body. Gandhi said the Congress has 'concrete 100 per cent proof" that the Election Commission (EC) allowed cheating in a constituency in Karnataka and warned the poll panel that it will not get away with this 'because we are going to come for you". Responding to Gandhi's statement, the EC said that as far as the Karnataka elections are concerned, it is 'highly unfortunate" that rather than filling an election petition as per Section 80 of the Representation of the People Act 1951, or if filed, awaiting the verdict of the high court, he not only made 'baseless allegations" but has also 'chosen to threaten" the EC, a constitutional body. Gandhi alleged that the EC is not functioning as the Election Commission of India, and is 'not doing its job". Asked about the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav's reported remarks that the option of boycotting the Bihar assembly polls was open, Gandhi told reporters in the Parliament House premises that his party has 'concrete 100 per cent proof" of the EC allowing cheating in a seat in Karnataka. Swipe Left For Next Video View all 'Not 90 per cent, when we decide to show it to you, it is a 100 per cent proof," the former Congress president said. 'We just looked at one constituency and we found this. I am absolutely convinced that constituency after constituency this is the drama that is taking place … I want to send a message to the Election Commission — if you think you are going to get away with this, if your officers think they are going to get away with this, you are mistaken. You are not going to get away with this because we are going to come for you," Gandhi said.
