Gangster Bhagwanpuria's sister-in-law arrested from Amritsar airport
Lovjit Kaur was wanted by Batala police in connection with the May 26 murder of gangster Gurpreet Singh, alias Gora Bariar.
She had come to India to attend the last rites of her mother-in-law and had reached the Amritsar airport on Monday night to board a flight to Australia, said police.
But with a lookout circular (LOC) already out against her, airport authorities alerted the police.
She was promptly taken into custody by the Amritsar City police. As per sources, the local police quizzed her through the night and handed her over to Batala police on Tuesday morning.
The Batala police are ascertaining her possible role in the recent murders and her connection with other accused individuals.
Fearing arrest, Bhagwanpuria's brother Mandeep Singh skipped his mother's last rites. His wife was present in his stead.
The Davinder Bambiha gang has claimed responsibility for the twin murders on June 26, claiming that Harjit Kaur and Karanvir had been managing the criminal operations of Bhagwanpuria.
Reportedly the mentor of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, Bhagwanpuria is an accused in the May 2022 murder of Sidhu Moose Wala. In March this year, he was detained under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, and shifted from Bathinda central jail to Assam's Silchar jail on the recommendation of the Narcotics Control Bureau.

Man detained in drug case dies in NCB custody in M.P.; tribal man ‘assaulted' inside police station
A 35-year-old man, detained for alleged illegal possession of drugs, passed away in the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB)'s custody in Madhya Pradesh's Mandsaur district, officials said on Friday (July 25, 2025). According to the NCB, Mahipal Singh Rajput was detained from Unhel in Ujjain district in the intervening night of July 23 and 24 with 411 grams of MD drug, and was brought to Mandsaur on Thursday (July 24, 2025) morning. R.K. Chaturvedi, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), NCB told The Hindu that Mr. Rajput fell ill after reaching Mandsaur and was immediately rushed to a hospital where he passed away. A judicial probe by the district court has been initiated in the matter, he added. 'He fell ill and started vomiting even before we could begin the proceedings or questioning him so we moved him to a hospital. Prima facie, the doctors are saying that he had infection in his stomach and lungs that caused vomiting and he accidentally swallowed it resulting in choking,' Mr. Chaturvedi said, adding that a panel of doctors will conduct the post-mortem on the deceased. The deceased's family questioned the police's move of taking him to a private hospital instead of a government facility. Mr. Chaturvedi, however, said, 'We took him to the best possible option available nearby because the private hospital also had ventilator facility.' He said that Mr. Rajput had been convicted for 12 years after he was arrested in 2009 for possession of 300 grams of smack. Meanwhile, a tribal man was allegedly brutally assaulted inside Bhainsdehi police station in Betul district, after he was detained following a argument with some locals. In a complaint given to Bhainsdehi sub-divisional magistrate (SDM), Parasram Chilhate alleged that around 10.30 a.m. on July 24 his brother Sandeep Chilhate was 'thrashed by some local liquor traders and taken to the police station where the cops also brutally beat him up'. 'He was only allowed to leave around 8 p.m. after giving ₹30,000 to the cops. He was partially unconscious when we brought him home,' Mr. Parasram said in the complaint. Betul SP Nishchal Jhharia said that he received a complaint in the matter on Friday evening and has directed the local sub-divisional police officer (SDOP) to launch an investigation into it. 'We will verify all aspects of the case and investigate this. If anyone, including our department officers, are found involved in this, legal action will be taken against them,' he said, speaking to The Hindu. Earlier this month, three police personnel were suspended in Chhatarpur district for 'thrashing four tribal youths with belts and canes' and 'torturing' them in custody over suspicious of theft.

Delhi Government Mandates CCTVs At All Pharmacies By July End
The Delhi government has mandated the installation of CCTV cameras in the national capital by the end of July. The decision comes after a meeting under the 11th National Narcotics Coordination portal (NCORD), aiming to curb the sale of Schedule H, H1, and X drugs without prescription. It is a significant move to prevent the misuse of dual-use medicines. The decision was taken after authorities had received complaints about these drugs being misused for intoxication, on humans and animals, and even in textiles, chemicals, and food items. This step is expected to enhance surveillance in coordination with the Narcotics Control Bureau and the Delhi government, thereby curbing illegal drug distribution. The letter issued on the same stated, "As per provisions of the National Narcotics Coordination Portal, in collaboration with the Narcotics Control Bureau, has been advised to stop, prevent and discourage the sale of dual-use medicines without prescription and an advisory dated first August 2024 on this matter was already issued earlier." The Schedule H drugs are some of the most commonly used medicines, such as painkillers and seasonal flu drugs. They are usually the highest-selling over-the-counter drugs, though technically they require a prescription. For the Schedule H1 drugs, regulations are stricter. Chemists are required to maintain a register of their sales, including details of the prescribing doctor and the patient. The last category, Schedule X drugs, falls under the strictest regulatory category. They typically include psychotropic substances and cannot be sold without a valid medical prescription. Their storage and sale are closely monitored due to potential misuse. All the pharmacies and chemists have been advised to install cameras by the end of this month.

Illegal drugs enter higher edu campuses in state
Bhubaneswar: Seizure of drugs and arrest of students point to drug addiction among youths. On Tuesday, an engineering graduate from the city was arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) for procuring six blots of lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) from a trafficking network supplying illegal drugs. In April this year, heroin was seized from two youths near Shiv Temple on the Utkal University campus. It had created a hue and cry on the campus prompting students to urge university authorities to strengthen campus security. Similar cases have been reported from other campuses in the state too. "Drug menace in campuses will give rise to violence and students will become wayward. It is a disturbing trend, and the govt should devise a plan to stop this drug menace," said Malay Tripathy, a prohibitionist. The higher education department has also sensed the problem and asked principals of govt and non-govt aided colleges to create awareness programmes on drug-free campuses. "The growing menace of drug and narcotic substance abuse among youth has emerged as a serious threat to the well-being of individuals and the harmony of our society. Educational institutions, being the foundational spaces for shaping the future of our nation, have a pivotal role to play in fostering a healthy, safe, and drug-free environment," said Ramesh Chandra Behera, deputy secretary of the department, in a letter to principals. The NCB has launched the MANAS (Mental Health and Normalcy Augmentation System) portal, where any citizen, student, or youth of India can lodge a complaint on the national helpline number 1933 regarding drug use on campus, if any, and also through email and the mobile app, namely 'Umang'. Colleges are requested to give wide publicity about the MANAS portal in their institution by conducting awareness programmes," said Behera in the letter. The colleges are asked to create massive awareness among the public as well as students through National Service Scheme (NSS) volunteers to take an anti-drug e-pledge on the My Gov Platform. They will also sensitise students about the harmful effects of drugs on individuals and society by conducting sensitisation programmes, debates, essay writing, painting, and rallies.
