Celtic new boy on getting life lessons from Lisbon Lion John Clark

But Doohan, who has returned to the East End following a successful two year spell at Aberdeen, still believes that he knows exactly what is required to play for the Scottish champions, what standards he has to attain both on and off the pitch, as a result of his first stint.
Bringing Celtic legend John Clark, who tragically passed away at the age of 84 on Monday, sweet treats on a regular basis when the Lisbon Lion was the kit man and then listening to his stories made him realise the levels that he needs to reach on a weekly basis.
The 27-year-old, who signed a three year contract at his old club last week, was distraught when he learned the sad news about Clark earlier on this week.

'When I was younger I used to come in with cakes,' he said. 'There would be John, Hugh McGovern, Steve Wright and Hugh Hoolihan in the kit room. I used to spend hours in there after training, just sitting and talking to them.
'So it's devastating to hear about John because he's such a legend, he's such a big part of this club. My deepest condolences go to his family. It's obviously not nice to hear at all.
'I was here full-time from when I was 16 until when I was 23. So I always saw him in and about the training ground at Lennoxtown and about the stadium. He was a great guy and had great charisma. It's just a massive loss for the club because he was a massive part of this club.
'There were always wee stories. But John was always the type of person who would just see himself as a normal person. But what he's done in the game for this club is massive and he will never be forgotten. It's just such a shame.
'But the type of guy he was, you'd never think he was a Lisbon Lion in the way he acted. I think he didn't realise how big an influence he had on so many people at this club. Including me and all the youth team when I was there.
(Image: Colin Mearns) 'He was just a great person to have around. The way he acted, it wasn't as if he had won the European Cup with the club. But everybody knew he had so he always had the respect of everybody at the club. He was just such a massive part of this football club.
'As I say, I used to bring the cakes in, Tunnock's Tea Cakes or Caramel Wafers. I'd bring them in, sit in the kit room and have a chat with him and the other kit men.
'He didn't speak to you about football, it was more about what you were like as a person, which I think is more important. He'd speak about working hard and your attitude and everything. He will just be a massive loss and it's devastating to hear.'
Having to vie with Kasper Schmeichel and Viljami Sinisalo for a place in Brendan Rodgers' starting line-up in the 2025/26 campaign will be tough for Doohan.
However, the man who made 18 appearances for Aberdeen last term and picked up a Scottish Cup winner's medal in May is delighted to be back at Celtic and is looking forward to the challenge.

'It means a lot to sign for Celtic again,' he said. 'I feel like I grew up here. I knew I had to probably leave. It was the best for me at that time. With just the one position as a goalkeeper, I felt I had to go out and play. But the loan spells were great when I was here before and when I went away permanently I got a lot of game time.
'I know the club quite well because I have spent a lot of my life here and I know what's expected of being a Celtic player. Obviously winning games is great, but the way you conduct yourself and come across is very important too.
'So I think knowing the club and the size of the club will maybe make it a bit easier for me coming in. I have had the previous experience, growing up here and having to leave to come back.
'Coming from the youth system here, being from Glasgow, I know how big the club is. My family are all Celtic fans and it's just a great honour to be back. It was always a pull when I left here, it was always a dream to come back.'
Doohan continued, 'I've got to back myself. I've just got to go out and train and work hard and then any opportunity I get, I need to grasp it. I need to train hard during the week to be ready for the game at the weekend, whether I'm playing or not.
'That's life as a goalkeeper, you always need to be ready. So that's what I'm going to do, work hard and just prepare like I'm playing every game.
'I feel like competition's healthy everywhere. If you're competing with people, that'll bring out the best in you. So that's what I'm looking to do, looking to come in, push on and really see what happens and just hopefully make a stamp in the squad here.'

As Brendan Rodgers' Celtic brace for fresh charge at home and abroad, here's why Hoops chiefs can't afford to drop guard

The rays of summer may have camouflaged a cloudy disappointment of the recent past, but Celtic supporters will roll into Glasgow's East End on Sunday with a certain lightness in their step. Celts commence their 2025/26 Premiership season, hosting St Mirren at Parkhead, when the last meaningful kicks of 2024/25 – a penalty shoot-out loss against Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup final 68 days previously – only seem like yesterday.

Oliver Antman is closing in on a move to Rangers. | Lehtikuva/AFP via Getty Images Martin refused to be drawn on Antman specifically after Saturday's disappointing 1-1 draw with Motherwell, but did say: 'We need some better players to help us, for sure. We need some players that we feel will do what we're asking them to do all the time.' Martin added to his attacking options earlier in the week with the loan signing of 17-year-old Mikey Moore from Tottenham Hotspur. Martin has say on Dessers Meanwhile, Martin has confirmed that Rangers have rejected a bid for their striker Cyriel Dessers. The Nigerian, who was the club's top goalscorer last season, came on as a late substitute against Motherwell and has been persistently linked with a move this summer. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Dessers was one of the only Rangers players to be namechecked positively by Martin after the draw at Fir Park and he could now start against Viktoria Plzen in the Champions League qualifier on Tuesday after another largely ineffective No 9 performance from Danilo. Rangers have received a bid for Cyriel Dessers. | SNS Group 'Cyriel Dessers is the only guy in the building who's in the squad today that we've actually had a bid for,' said Martin. 'We turn it down, I chat to Cyriel, he's dealt with it brilliantly. He's not ready to start because he had an injury and he's trained late. 'Then he comes on for two games and runs like a beast and gets on with it because he's a good professional and a good human being and he doesn't want anyone to feel, if he does leave or stays, he doesn't want anyone to feel negatively about him. That's the way to behave properly. So he's a good example to some.' Edouard set to play in Spain Former Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard is on the brink of sealing a move from Crystal Palace to Spanish LaLiga outfit Girona in a deal that could earn the Selhurst Park side up to £5.5m. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Edouard left Celtic four years ago for the English Premier League and last season was farmed out to Leicester City. He has no future in London and that led to some speculation that he could rejoin the Scottish champions and rekindle a working relationship with his ex-boss Brendan Rodgers, although the Northern Irishman poured cold water on that idea. Odsonne Edouard is set to sign for Girona. | Getty Images Quizzed on Edouard last month, Rodgers said: "There are lots of players linked with us. Odsonne hasn't been on my radar, to be fair. I obviously know him, but it's about a player who will fit into the structure of the team." Now he is set to play in Spain with Girona, who have former Aberdeen striker Bojan Miovski amongst their forward options. Hibs defender latest Hibs remain in talks with Scotland centre-half Grant Hanley as they look to reinforce their defensive options for the season ahead. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Hanley, 33, has been capped 62 times by Scotland and is a free agent after leaving Birmingham City last summer. He attended Hibs' 2-1 Europa League defeat by Midtjylland on Thursday night and is a former international teammate of the club's current technical performance manager. Grant Hanley takes in Hibs' match with Midtjylland alongside David Marshall. | SNS Group Hibs' need to bring in another right-sided defender is heightened due to Australia internationalist Lewis Miller being in advanced discussions with English Championship side Blackburn Rovers. A transfer in the region of £1m is expected to be concluded imminently. Hibs are in action on Sunday afternoon when they kick off their Premiership campaign away to Dundee. Hearts want duo before kick-off Hearts still hope to have the transfers if either Pierre Landry Kabore or Tomas Bent Magnusson completed in time ahead of Monday's Premiership curtain-raiser against Aberdeen. They have also concluded negotiations with Valur for Icelandic midfielder Magnusson and are waiting on all paperwork being signed off. Hearts head coach Derek McInnes. | SNS Group Hearts head coach Derek McInnes would like to have both available to him for the visit of the Dons, but admitted earlier in the week that the matter remains in the hands of other officials. Hearts also hope to offload some fringe players before the transfer window is out and are actively working on deals. Another suitor for Miller Torino have become the latest Italian Serie A club to be credited with an interest in Motherwell midfielder Lennon Miller, joining Bologna and Udinese in the hunt for the 18-year-old's signature. Miller did not feature on Saturday against Rangers, but his head coach Jens Berthel Askou says he is not too far away from first-team action. "He's been working really hard with the staff to get ready for this game,' Askou said. "Unfortunately, he didn't make it.

When Celtic will 'move forward' to sign Balikwisha

The winger has been continually linked with a move to Parkhead, although in recent days, it was said that he was in advanced talks to join a French side. Those claims have since been refuted by Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri, who says that Celtic will move forward to sign Balikwisha, depending on whether they qualify for the Champions League. 🔴⚪️ Despite reports, Southampton FC hasn't expressed any formal interest for Michel Ange Baliwkisha. 🍀 Player's still a target for Celtic FC who's likely to move forward in case of #UCL qualification. ⏳ Wait&See… #mercato #SaintsFC — Sacha Tavolieri (@sachatavolieri) August 2, 2025 Balikwisha missed the majority of last season through injury, but still managed to score four goals and set up three in 17 appearances for Royal Antwerp. With Brendan Rodgers on the lookout for a winger, or perhaps even two, before the end of the window, the 24-year-old could be an option. Read more: This latest update comes after Celtic boss Rodgers opened up on transfers on Friday as his side prepare to kick off their Scottish Premiership campaign. He said: "We've still got a wee bit of work to do. I think that it's a huge credit to the guys who are here and how well they've worked. But the squad will hopefully look different again come the end of the window. "We know the work that we need to do, and it's my responsibility to convince the club that we really need them. I'm not doing that job as well as maybe what I can, but I will continue to pursue that because it's something that's important for us."
