Could Cardinals former MVP candidate be heading to the Dodgers?

Yahoo10 hours ago
One of the Cardinals corner infielders could be heading (back) to the National League West to relieve the reigning World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers of some injury issues that have been plaguing the team as of late.
Dodgers third baseman Max Muncy suffered a bone bruise and will miss some time in the field for the Boys in Blue, but a well-known major league name looks like a prime suspect to fill that void, that name being Cardinals hot corner Nolan Arenado.

Arenado's name was brought up multiple times during the offseason as almost a guaranteed trade prospect for the struggling Cardinals team, especially after first baseman Paul Goldschmidt left the Red Birds to sign with the New York Yankees.
But now as the Cardinals sit at 47-40, still fully in the fight for a playoff spot in the NL, there really is no guarantee at this point.
However, if the champs were to go after Arenado and bring him back home to his Southern California roots, it would be a significant boost in the defense game, Arenado owning 10 Gold Gloves to his name, and even a slight boost in offense, even though Nolan's 40-homer seasons are much in the past.
Nolan grew up in Lake Forest, CA and is an alumnus of El Toro High School, where he was teammates with fellow stellar defensive third baseman Matt Chapman.
After 80 games played in the 2025 season, Arenado currently holds a .247 batting average with 10 home runs and 41 runs batted in.

Orel Hershiser zings Astros for past cheating during historic Dodgers home beatdown

That 2017 Astros World Series title will always come with a cheating asterisk, and Dodgers legend Orel Hershiser sure hasn't forgotten. The former-pitcher-turned-television-analyst made a cheating dig while Houston handed the Dodgers their worst home loss since opening Dodger Stadium in 1962 in Friday's 18-1 beatdown. 'I don't want to open an old wound, but in some ways they're swinging at these breaking balls like they know what is coming,' Hershiser said after a double in the third with Houston leading, 4-1. 'That's not a bad pitch. It's really a very good pitch. Low and away, probably would have ended up by the ankles if it would have made it past the bat.' The Astros are forever going to have to wear the cheater label after they illegally used videos to steal signs during the 2017 and 2018 seasons. That 2017 season ended with the Astros triumphing over the Dodgers in Game 7 of the World Series in Los Angeles to win their first championship. Houston kept its title despite the cheating, which included using trash cans to relay pitches, while several Dodgers called out the team for its actions. 3 Oral Hershiser is pictured in 2015. Charles Wenzelberg/New York Post Former Dodger and current Yankees outfielder Cody Bellinger previously said he lost respect for the Astros and Jose Altuve 'stole' the 2017 AL MVP from current teammate Aaron Judge. Old feelings die hard, as the saying goes, so perhaps it's not shocking that Hershiser referenced the cheating scandal while Houston turned Friday's game into glorified batting practice. 3 The Astros celebrate during the 18-1 win. AP The fans surely didn't forget, chanting 'cheater' at Altuve during his at-bats, per ESPN. Hershiser, who pitched for the Dodgers from 1983-94 and in 2000 during an 18-season career, made his remark after the Astros tallied their fifth extra-base hit in two-plus innings against Ben Casparius. Houston grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first, and that ballooned to 4-1 in the fourth when they started the inning with a double and a homer — before Cam Smith's double that elicited Hershiser's comment. The next batter, Christian Walker, hit a two-run homer to turn the game into a blowout. 3 The Astros won the 2017 title at Dodger Stadium. AP The 23-year-old Casparius, making his third start of the season, surrendered six runs on nine hits in three innings. Dodgers reliever Noah Davis had an egregiously bad day, allowing 10 runs in 1 1/3 innings. Manager Dave Roberts even made a curious remark after the game that perhaps could be interpreted by some as a reference Houston's former tactics. 'I don't think Ben was good tonight,' Roberts said. 'It seemed like they were on everything he threw up there.'

Free agency slows, but are the biggest NBA moves still coming?

The Pulse Newsletter 📣 | This is The Athletic's daily sports newsletter. Sign up here to receive The Pulse directly in your inbox. Good morning! We hope you executed a sign-and-trade to acquire some hot dogs. NBA free agency is more or less over. It's a funny thing to say, given that nobody can officially sign a new deal until tomorrow at 12:01 p.m. ET. There are still a few loose ends to tie up, particularly in the market for restricted free agents like Jonathan Kuminga, whom the Warriors are trying to convert into a small ransom. But after a few days of intense dealmaking, most of the league's most notable players have a home for 2025-26. Advertisement John Hollinger argues that the trade deadline is now more exciting than free agency, and he's right. But news of this year's splashiest acquisition so far came neither at the deadline nor in the free agency negotiating window of the past week. Instead it came on June 22, when the Rockets' trade for Kevin Durant became public. That deal may become bigger in the next few days, and the term 'seven-team trade' could become a part of the professional sports lexicon. It's worth bookmarking our big moves tracker as deals trickle in. But could there be a really big one coming? LeBron James' future with the Lakers is uncertain enough that Fred Katz wrote up a detailed index of potential trade destinations. The Bucks' waiving of an injured Damian Lillard and signing of Myles Turner — a really interesting two-step, by the way — do not at all suggest they're giving up. The opposite, if anything. Yet the chances of a Giannis Antetokounmpo trade still seem higher than zero. Much has happened. How much has changed? To take stock of how the league has shifted, we've got Hollinger and Bounce newsletter author Zach Harper here for a quick survey. The non-Thunder favorites to come out of the West? Likelier to move: Giannis or LeBron? The worst team Giannis could credibly take to the finals: One move that will age like fine wine: One move that will age like spoiled milk: Harper's July 4 favorite in the East, by the way, is the Magic.
