MEERUT: A 16-year-old boy was accidentally shot dead by a friend during an anti-drone vigilante patrol in Puthi village in Meerut on Tuesday.
The patrol, formed by villagers amid panic over suspected UAV sightings across western UP, ended in tragedy when the accused accidentally fired the illegal pistol he was showing off.
There were no drone sightings that night, and the victim,
Rohit Kumar
, was not involved in any drone-related activity, officials said.
Rohit was part of a four-member group of youths taking turns to patrol the area after rumours of drone-based reconnaissance for robberies spread across western UP. Around 4am, he and Mayank Kumar, 20, stepped aside for a smoke when Mayank allegedly pulled out his pistol to show off. During this, he accidentally pulled the trigger.
Meerut (rural) SP Rakesh Kumar Mishra told TOI: "The accused and the victim were smoking when Mayank took out his illegal firearm to show off. During this, he accidentally pulled the trigger. The bullet hit the boy's back, killing him on the spot." Mayank called the others in the group and alerted the victim's family. The boy was taken to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
An FIR was filed at Parikshitgarh police station against Mayank under BNS section 103 (murder) and relevant sections of Arms Act. "Mayank has been jailed. We are probing how he acquired the illegal weapon," added Mishra.

6 ‘associates' of Bishnoi acquitted in attempt to murder case

The Chandigarh District Court has acquitted six persons, reportedly associates of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, due to lack of evidence in an attempt to murder case. Those acquitted are Monty Shah of Burail, Parvinder Wadhwa, Deepak Wadhwa, and Virendra Soni from Hanumangarh (Rajasthan), and Vinay Kalyan and Mohit Kumar from Kalka (Haryana). A seventh accused, Kuldeep Singh Ghosal, passed away during the trial, and thus proceedings against him were stopped. All of them were booked five years ago under IPC Sections 307 (attempt to murder), 120B (criminal conspiracy), and various sections of the Arms Act by the Sector-34 police station. The case was filed based on a complaint by Tirath Singh, who had alleged that the accused had tried to kill him and the brother of slain cable operator Sonu Shah, Parveen. However, during the trial, the complainant turned hostile and refused to identify the accused in court. Advocate Palwinder Singh Lucky, who represented Vinay, Parvinder, and Deepak, argued that the police had falsely implicated his clients and that they were not even present at the crime scene. He accused the police of fabricating a story to frame them. As per allegations, Tirath Singh, a resident of Burail and business associate of Sonu Shah and his brother Praveen, was targeted shortly after Sonu's murder on September 28, 2020. Tirath had alleged that Monty Shah, holding a pistol, tried to kill him and Praveen, owing to personal enmity. He recounted that around 11.30 pm, while he was on a call outside his office, Monty approached him with a pistol. Tirath managed to escape into his office as shots were fired. Monty and his accomplices then fled in a car. Based on Tirath's statement, the police had arrested Monty and the other accused. But with the complainant retracting his testimony in court, all accused have now been acquitted.

Madrassa teacher held for sexually assaulting, killing bro-in-law, 13

M eerut: A 35-year-old madrassa teacher was arrested on Sunday for allegedly sexually assaulting and beating his 13-year-old brother-in-law to death in Hapur's Hafizpur area. The minor, a native of Ghaziabad, was living at his sister's house to study at the madrassa. On July 9, the accused told the boy's parents that he had died after falling from the terrace and insisted on an immediate burial. The family conducted the funeral in Ghaziabad, but grew suspicious after noticing injuries on his body, including near his private parts. Later, the boy's sister told the family that Shahzad used to sleep next to the teen and would often violate him. She had remained silent due to fear and the belief that the situation would eventually improve. Following permission from Ghaziabad district magistrate, the body was exhumed, and a postmortem examination was conducted. The report confirmed the boy had been sexually assaulted and fatally beaten. Police launched an investigation and detained the brother-in-law, who confessed to the crime. "An FIR under BNS sections 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), and 3/4 of the Pocso Act has been registered," said Anita Chauhan, circle officer, Pilakhua. SHO Ashish Pundeer told TOI that an investigation is also underway to determine if any other children were also sexually abused by the accused teacher. "Appropriate action will be taken," he said. Late night hostel row at Sambalpur University

Sambalpur: Tension flared between first and second-year postgraduate girl students at Sambalpur University late Saturday night after a threatening message began circulating in a social media group created by hostel residents. In the message, a second-year tudent allegedly ordered all first-year students to attend a late-night meeting at the study hall, warning that those who failed to comply would be forcibly removed from their rooms. The warden of the girls' hostel confirmed the dispute and the circulation of intimidating messages. According to the complainant, a first-year student, and a viral screenshot, the meeting was scheduled for 10.15pm. Those who failed to attend were reportedly threatened with physical assault. The first-year students, fearing repercussions, attended the meeting, where they were first asked to surrender their mobile phones. They were then made to stand throughout the session, which lasted until midnight. Some first-year students were also allegedly threatened that their thumbs would be slit for supporting a peer who had earlier raised objections in the social media group. Warden of the postgraduate girls' hostel, K N Sethi, told TOI, "We are aware of the dispute between the PG first and second-year girl students. It was not a case of ragging. The hostel superintendent has been asked to speak to the students and assess the situation. The second-year student who sent the message has deleted it. It was apparently intended as an instruction on hostel conduct. We have yet to formally hear the first-year students' complaints.
