Eagles Fan Tyler Sabapathy Dies After Horrific Accident While Celebrating Team's Super Bowl Berth

Yahoo29-01-2025
An 18-year-old Temple University student died Tuesday after falling from a light pole he climbed to celebrate the Philadelphia Eagles' Super Bowl-clinching playoff victory over the Washington Commanders.
The incident occurred as fans gathered at 15th and Market streets in Philadelphia on Sunday night, an ABC affiliate reported.
Tyler Sabapathy fell backward from the pole and hit his head on the concrete sidewalk, the station reported. He was rushed to a hospital with a brain injury and died there two days later.
A Philly NBC affiliate shared video of Sabapathy perched on the pole before his fall.
'The loss of a promising 18-year-old man like Tyler is both tragic and traumatic,' university president John Fry wrote in an open letter to the school. 'There are no words that can make sense of it, and the entire Temple community mourns his passing.'
The letter noted that Sabapathy, a native of Toronto, was a member of the gymnastics club team who majored in exercise and sports science. 'Tyler was fascinated with injury prevention, and this ultimately led him to pursue the major that he did. He no doubt had a bright future ahead of him, and it is so tragic that we will not be able to see how he would have made his mark on the world.'
There were other reports after the NFC Championship game of fans scaling poles ― somewhat of a tradition in the city.
During the last time the Eagles advanced to the Super Bowl in 2023, many revelers climbed poles and traffic lights despite authorities having them greased as a deterrent.
New Orleans police have warned Eagles fans not to shimmy up poles ahead of the team's Super Bowl clash against the Kansas City Chiefs on Feb. 9 in the Superdome. The practice is illegal and unsafe, the police said.

Panthers great Cam Newton goes scorched earth on celeb detractors amid Jalen Hurts debate

Carolina Panthers great Cam Newton just hit the nuclear button. The franchise's all-time leading passer and former NFL Most Valuable Player had received a bit of criticism after not including Philadelphia Eagles star Jalen Hurts on his recent list of the game's top 10 quarterbacks. Newton, however, believed that some of the backlash was too pointed and too personal. So, he took out a little time this week to respond to the detractors—including ESPN's Stephen A. Smith, Ryan Clark and Dan Orlovsky, Pro Football Hall of Famer Terrell Owens and rapper/Eagles superfan Gillie Da Kid. Strap in . . . To Newton's point, he did not disparage Hurts for his talents and abilities under center. In fact, he praised the reigning Super Bowl MVP. Here's what Newton said of Hurts during that July 17 episode of 4th & 1 with Cam Newton: "Jalen Hurts is a great quarterback. Do not get that twisted," he stated. "But if we're talking about what they bring to the table, it's hard to judge what Jalen Hurts can do when you're throwing to a guy like A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith. When you have a tight end skill set, you have a dominant defense, you have the best running back [Saquon Barkley] in the game." Newton's list went down as follows: Despite his reasoning, the debate got turned up to a pretty spicy level—as is often the case in today's media landscape. Oh, and when you have Newton in the mix, well, it's bound to get even spicier. So, that's what y'all wanted to see, huh? Follow @ThePanthersWire on Twitter/X for more Panthers content.

49ers Drawing Attention From Notable Free Agent Wide Receiver

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. With training camp underway, the San Francisco 49ers are hoping to make a run back to Super Bowl contention. After missing the playoffs last season and being plagued by injuries, the 49ers want to emulate their success from two years ago when they made a run to the big game. Unfortunately, in that Super Bowl, San Francisco was unable to defeat Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. One of the big questions the 49ers are facing comes at the wide receiver position. While the 49ers have good players at the position, Aiyuk is still working his way back from a torn ACL and they don't have a lot of depth. To that end, it's possible that John Lynch could consider making a move to bring another wide receiver in. One name has shown interest in signing with San Francisco. Former Buffalo Bills and Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Gabe Davis has been open about his interest in the 49ers. During an appearance on the "Up & Adams Show," Davis spoke out about San Francisco. "San Fran is definitely a spot I'm looking at," Davis said. "Shanahan's the man. He knows how to call an offense. They just got a lot of great weapons around there... Definitely a team that interests me because I like to be around great players." Read more: Browns Defender Shockingly Decides to Retire During Training Camp Last season with the Jaguars, Davis played in 10 games. He caught 20 passes for 239 yards and two touchdowns. Back in 2023 with the Bills, however, he racked up 45 catches for 746 yards and seven touchdowns. Davis has always been known as a deep threat. With Brock Purdy under center, he could be a big-time addition for the 49ers. Adding another big-play threat could be what takes the offense to the next step. Bringing in more quality weapons for a franchise quarterback like Purdy is always a wise decision. Davis is clearly interested in the opportunity. Lynch should seriously consider it. File Photo by Derik Hamilton/UPI | License Photo July 25 (UPI) -- Cleveland Browns linebacker Jordan Hicks will retire from the NFL after 10 seasons, he announced Friday on Instagram. Hicks signed a two-year deal in 2024. "After 23 years of playing football, I'm officially retiring from the NFL," Hicks wrote on the social media platform. "Football has given me more than I could have ever imagined. Purpose, discipline, brotherhood and a platform to impact others. But most importantly, it showed me who I am outside the game." Hicks, 33, entered the league as a third-round pick by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2015 NFL Draft. He spent four seasons with the NFC East franchise, including its Super Bowl winning 2017-18. Hicks, who signed an $8 million deal with the Browns last off-season, totaled 78 combined tackles, four passes defensed, four tackles for a loss and two sacks over 12 starts in 2024. "Congrats on an incredible 10 seasons in the league, Jordan," the Browns said. "You've been a driven, resilient playmaker your entire career and a valued leader in our building this past year. Best wishes in this next stage with your family." Hicks totaled 952 combined tackles, 53 passes defensed, 51 tackles for a loss, 16.5 sacks, 13 interceptions, 11 fumble recoveries, six forced fumbles and two defensive scores over 134 career appearances. He also played for the Arizona Cardinals and Minnesota Vikings. "I leave this chapter with deep gratitude for every lesson, challenge, and victory," Hicks wrote. "I'm proud of what I accomplished on the field, but even more proud of the man I've become because of it. "To my teammates, coaches, fans, and most importantly my family: thank you for your unwavering support throughout this journey. I'm looking forward to this next season of life and all that it brings. I walk away with peace knowing I gave football all I had, and that the best is yet to come." Devin Bush, Mohamoud Diabate, Carson Schwesinger and Jerome Baker are among the linebackers on the Browns' roster.
