Trump-Musk bromance descends into brawl over contracts and impeachment

TimesLIVE06-06-2025
Donald Trump threatened on Thursday to cut off government contracts to Elon Musk's companies and the world's richest man suggested the US president should be impeached, marking a stark end to an unlikely alliance and leaving onlookers wondering what was next.
The hostilities between the former allies intensified when the president criticised Tesla CEO Musk in the Oval Office and the pair then lobbed verbal barbs at each other on their social media platforms, Trump's Truth Social and Musk's X.
"The easiest way to save money in our budget, billions and billions of dollars, is to terminate Elon's governmental subsidies and contracts," Trump posted.
Tesla shares closed down more than 14% on Thursday, losing about $150bn (R2.6-trillion) in market value in the largest single-day decline in value in its history.
Minutes after the closing bell, Musk replied "Yes" to a post on X saying Trump should be impeached, an unthinkable move in Congress where Trump's Republicans hold majorities in the two chambers.

Chinese cars nearly double their European market share in 2025

Car sales across Europe declined in June, with a 4.4% year-on-year drop to 1.25-million vehicles, data from JATO Dynamics showed on Wednesday. While overall demand softened, Chinese automakers continued to gain ground, taking a record market share and squeezing several established European brands, the research data showed. Chinese automakers are expanding in Europe, breaking into a market traditionally dominated by European and American brands supported by their cheaper pricing amid a shift towards electric vehicles. This has stoked trade tensions between Brussels and Beijing, including a row over EU tariffs on Chinese-made EVs, imposed to protect European producers. Chinese brands nearly doubled their combined share of the European market to 5.1% in the first half of 2025, just shy of Mercedes-Benz's 5.2%, the report said. Registrations of Chinese vehicles surged 91% since the start of the year. BYD, Jaecoo, Omoda, Leapmotor and Xpeng were the five names fuelling the surge, with BYD alone registering 70,500 units in the first six months of 2025, a 311% jump from a year ago. Stellantis saw the steepest market share decline among major automakers, to 15.3% from 16.7% a year earlier. The second biggest decline came from Tesla, to 1.6% in the half-year period versus 2.4% last year. Registrations of battery electric vehicles (BEV) surpassed one million for the first time in the first half, with a 25% rise to 1.19-million units — 17.4% of the market. 'Persistently high prices, geopolitical and economic tensions with Europe's trading partners and the postpandemic market reality are behind the decline,' Felipe Munoz, global analyst at JATO Dynamics, said. 'The updated Tesla Model Y has so far failed to provide the expected sales boost for the brand,' Munoz said. 'At the same time, competition from BYD and Volkswagen Group is making it harder for Tesla to maintain its leadership position.'

Appropriation Bill to pass in crucial step for SA's R1.2-trillion Budget allocation

Finally, South Africa is one step closer to passing this year's Budget. But that hasn't stopped the GNU partners from their usual politicking. South Africa almost has a Budget as Government of National Unity (GNU) parties supported the first reading of the Appropriation Bill in Parliament on Wednesday, 23 July 2025. While parties united to support the bill, the political jabs between GNU members continued. Things began in Parliament, sitting at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, with Kingsley Wakelin from the DA taking a jab at the ANC, MK party and the EFF. 'In the meantime, internal conflicts within the ANC are distracting them from the real issues facing the country. The MK is undermining the very same Constitution that pays their salaries and the EFF is losing members and disabusing them — and the nation is suffering.' In order to pass the Appropriation Bill, all departmental budget votes need to be passed, and the bill needs 201 of 400 votes. On Tuesday, the DA said it would support the budget votes, and thus the Appropriation Bill, after Higher Education Minister Nobuhle Nkabane was fired on Monday night. The party had also called for the removal of Human Settlements Minister Thembi Simelane. On Wednesday, Wakelin continued: 'In last year's election, the voters sent a clear message about what they want. They no longer trust the ANC to govern on their own. They want jobs, not handouts.' The DA would not support the National Dialogue, Wakelin said. 'People want action. The people do not want to see R700-million wasted on another expensive dialogue.' Patriotic Alliance MP Ashley Sauls took a jab at the DA and said the party supported this Budget because it was now part of the governing coalition, even though 'it is the same Budget that was tabled in the past'. 'Principles have been sold for posts and blue lights,' he claimed. Money running out It was Deputy Finance Minister David Masondo who explained what would happen if the bill was not passed on Wednesday. 'Let me restate that the passing of this bill by Parliament will grant the national government to spend R1.2-trillion to deliver services, to protect the vulnerable and invest in our shared future. 'This R1.2-trillion, it's not just a number,' he said, giving examples of funding for hospitals, social grants and infrastructure projects. Masondo said the bill must be passed without delay or else there would be two big consequences. 'Without passing this bill, the government will be without authority for permission to spend beyond last year's allocation. As a result, the government will not fully provide services, including public servants.' He added: 'In the absence of the Appropriation Act, the government may only spend 45% of the previous year's Budget until the end of July, which is next week, and thereafter the government can only spend 10% a month of the previous appropriated Budget. Our estimation is that overall, by October 2025, the government will be without authority when we reach 100% of last year's appropriation.' The second implication of the delay of the Budget, Masondo said, was that 'critical priorities, new priorities can't be funded'. This included funding for passenger rail transport and essential health services, 'which is meant to facilitate the employment of 800 doctors in the public service'. 'This government won't be able to spend the R470-million for the digitisation project in home affairs,' said Masondo and made a point about visa reforms, something that has been a project for its minister, Leon Schreiber (DA). 'This project predates the year and we appreciate the energy, the zeal and the commitment by Minister Schreiber to continue to implement the reports… Without legal appropriation, those provisionally allocated funds cannot be dispersed,' said Masondo. Ultimately, Masondo said the Bill must be passed, because 'it is the most vulnerable members' who depend on public services such as grants and public schooling. After the bill is passed within the National Assembly, it will go to the National Council of Provinces for concurrence. The process continued on Wednesday as parties discussed budgets for each department. By 1pm, the budget vote for the Presidency had been approved, despite objections from the MK party, EFF and others. DM

'It is a mockery' - ANC slams US move to sanction its officials

JOHANNESBURG - The ANC has slammed the US' moves to sanction some of its leaders. ANC spokesperson, Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri says the idea of targeted sanctions against a party that led 'the freedom struggle,' is a 'mockery' and is 'embarrassing' to anyone who entertains such thoughts. The US South Africa Bilateral Relations Review Act cleared its first legislative hurdle when it was passed by the House Foreign Affairs Committee on Tuesday. The bill demands a full review of ties and possible sanctions against some ANC officials. Bhengu-Motsiri claims these sanctions are a product of 'nefarious' propaganda led by right-wing extremist organisations both at home and in the US. She adds they will carefully assess the situation. "We will have to calmly sit down and reflect on the situation and the implications of this proposed bill that is still going for debate in one of the houses of the US Congress," "We are also in contact with our historical allies who were active in the fight against Apartheid and are residents in the US," she said. The Committee Chairman, Brian Mast, says the ANC's direct engagement with Hamas leaders and the country's case against Israel at the International Court of Justice are further proof of worsening relations between South Africa and the US. Meanwhile, International Relations analysts and experts have previously told eNCA that the time has now arrived for South Africa to address its relations with the US. They've also urged parties to get their ducks in a row inside the GNU, as the cracks are starting to show. Bhengu-Motsiri agrees. "There has to be a discussion here at home among various state and non-state actors about the implications of this bill. The idea that the targeted sanctions are going to be aimed at ANC leaders is just a start..." she said.
