Ten days, ten stories come alive on stage
In a city where sabhas are synonymous with iyal (literature), isai (music) and nadagam (drama), Krishna Gana Sabha keeps the tradition of theatre alive every year with its Summer Drama Fest. For ten days, the sabha's stage becomes a canvas for laughter, nostalgia, and hard truths. As the 2025 edition unveiled on June 26, the stage once again became the meeting ground for veteran drama troupes sharpening their skills to meet the new-age audience.
'The drama fest was initially started in 1960. It's been over sixty years. It was my father (R Yagnaraman) who was the pioneer of Krishna Gana Sabha and this drama fest as well,' says Y Prabhu, general secretary of Krishna Gana Sabha. 'The intent was to provide a platform for Tamil theatre artistes to exhibit their talents.'
Various well-known veteran drama troupes including, actor Sivaji Ganesan troupe, actor Nagesh troupe, actress Manorama troupe, actor Mouli troupe among others have been part of this drama fest in the 90s. Notably, keeping up the legacy of late actor-comedian Crazy Mohan, his troupe, Crazy Creations have been performing continuously at the fest.

The rapper makes his way through the crowd in style and climbs atop a police van. When a protester throws a garland of slippers at him, he wears it around his neck, surprising both the angry protesters and his fans. Other details regarding the rest of the cast remain unknown at the moment. With music scored by Osho Venkat, the film has cinematography by Meiyyendiran and editing by Sudharshan. Balaji Kumar, Parthi Kumar, Sujith and director Selvah produce the film under their UK Squad banner.

'Kannappa' had a strong start on Day 1, collecting Rs 9.35 crore across languages, with Telugu at Rs 8.25 crore, Hindi at Rs 65 lakh, Tamil at Rs 15 lakh, Kannada at Rs 10 lakh, and Malayalam at Rs 20 lakh. The film saw a slight dip on Saturday with Rs 7.15 crore, and Sunday's collection stood at Rs 6.6 crore (as per rough data), with a marginal drop of 7.69%. However, the first Monday has seen a more significant drop, as expected for a weekday, bringing in only Rs 55 lakhs across all languages. The total box office tally as per the live updates for 'Kannappa' now stands at Rs 23.65 crore. The Monday morning occupancy reflected the dip. In the Telugu market, which has been the film's strongest territory, Kannappa recorded an overall occupancy of 12.22%. Tamil occupancy stood at 10.74%, while the Hindi version saw only 3.91%. Malayalam occupancy was slightly higher at 5.43%. These numbers mark a clear decline from the weekend high, showing that the film's weekday performance will now depend on strong word of mouth and continued family audience support.
