Bringing the fun of watching plays to homes and workplaces the ‘Crazy' way

: How does it sound like to watch a play from your home or workplace, without the hassle of travelling long distances on the congested city roads? That's exactly what the Crazy Creations drama troupe is aiming for. They have also begun conducting shows for large communities in their auditoriums, and so far, it has been a laugh riot for both the audiences and the cast. Maadhu Balaji, who leads the popular 47-year-old Tamil theatre troupe, said they had been trying out this format for over a month now, and the response had been encouraging. 'People prefer not to travel these days due to the traffic and want easier access to entertainment. The idea came about when Sriram from Australia wanted us to perform our play at a function in a restaurant, and invited his friends and family. The experience was unique. It took us to the past, when we only had microphones and an audience and did not bother about the backdrop or anything else. Since that one, we have had several opportunities to perform at various places,' he said. Of the several staged at corporate centres, one was performed at UPS India Technology Centre. Venkatesh Kasturirangan, associate director, explains how it came about. 'Parents often don't get the chance to see where their children work. So, we decided to invite them over on parents' day, and give them a glimpse into our world. Behind every employee is a family, who shaped their journey and supported them all along.' To top it all, Crazy Creations troupe's performance had the parents in splits and made the afternoon one to remember. The troupe has managed to keep the plays simple. Malthy Simha, clinical psychologist and resident of Adyar, recalls how the troupe made her husband's birthday special. 'Mr. Balaji asked only for a sofa set. He even gave me a role saying it would be a surprise for my husband. Everyone enjoyed it.' Actor and theatre personality Crazy Mohan's plays, including Chocolate Krishna, Marriage Made in Saloon, Meesai Aanaalum Manaivi, and Allaudin and 100 Watts Bulb are being tailor-made to suit the audiences. Ten days, ten stories come alive on stage

In a city where sabhas are synonymous with iyal (literature), isai (music) and nadagam (drama), Krishna Gana Sabha keeps the tradition of theatre alive every year with its Summer Drama Fest. For ten days, the sabha's stage becomes a canvas for laughter, nostalgia, and hard truths. As the 2025 edition unveiled on June 26, the stage once again became the meeting ground for veteran drama troupes sharpening their skills to meet the new-age audience. 'The drama fest was initially started in 1960. It's been over sixty years. It was my father (R Yagnaraman) who was the pioneer of Krishna Gana Sabha and this drama fest as well,' says Y Prabhu, general secretary of Krishna Gana Sabha. 'The intent was to provide a platform for Tamil theatre artistes to exhibit their talents.' Various well-known veteran drama troupes including, actor Sivaji Ganesan troupe, actor Nagesh troupe, actress Manorama troupe, actor Mouli troupe among others have been part of this drama fest in the 90s. Notably, keeping up the legacy of late actor-comedian Crazy Mohan, his troupe, Crazy Creations have been performing continuously at the fest.
