Agencies LONDON Hundreds of Russian attack drones and more than two dozen cruise missiles targeted Ukraine overnight, killing at least two people, as Moscow continued its campaign of nighttime strikes against civilian areas throughout the country, officials said. The deaths were in Chernivtsi, in the country's southwest, President Volodymyr Zelensky said, adding that the attack's targets stretched from the Kharkiv and Sumy regions in the east across to the Lviv region in the west. 'My condolences to their families and loved ones,' Zelensky said in a statement posted to social media. 'Around 20 more people injured in the attack are receiving all the necessary assistance.' Ukraine's Ministry of Defense said Russia fired at least 597 attack drones and 26 cruise missiles overnight. Some 319 drones and 25 missiles were shot down by Ukraine's defenses, the military said in a post to the Telegram messaging app, adding that another 258 drones 'were suppressed by electronic warfare.' Russia's Ministry of Defense said in a statement that it carried out a 'group strike with long-range air-based high-precision weapons and drones' that targeted Ukrainian defense industry targets in several cities. The ministry said it also struck a military airfield. Russia's overnight attacks have escalated in recent weeks, which have included several nights where Moscow launched record-breaking numbers of attack drones and missiles at Ukrainian cities, according to Ukraine. 'The pace of Russia's aerial strikes demands swift decisions — and it can be curbed through sanctions right now,' Zelensky said on Saturday. Russia's Lavrov praises Pyongyang's ‘unequivocal support' on Ukraine
DPA Moscow Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov praised his country's military alliance with North Korea on Saturday, during a visit aimed at reaffirming the two countries' strategic partnership. Russian President Vladimir Putin is 'counting on the continuation of direct contacts with you in the very near future,' Lavrov told North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in the port city of Wonsan, Russian news agencies reported. Putin conveyed his warm greetings to the North Korean leader, and assured him of Moscow's commitment to all agreements made with his country, the top diplomat emphasized. Moscow and Pyongyang signed a strategic partnership in 2024 during Putin's visit to North Korea. The agreement includes military assistance should one of the two countries be attacked. North Korea has supported the Russian war against Ukraine by supplying weapons and soldiers to Moscow. 'Our Korean friends have reaffirmed their unequivocal support for all the objectives of the special military operation and the actions of the Russian leadership and the Russian army,' Lavrov said, using the Kremlin's term for the invasion of Ukraine over three years ago. Kim travelled to the seaside resort of Wonsan to greet his guest, along with North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui. 'I thought it would be better to meet here rather than in Pyongyang, because they can relax a little here,' the North Korean leader said, according to the Russian state news agency TASS. Lavrov's visit took place against the backdrop of media reports about a possible new deployment of up to 30,000 additional North Korean soldiers to Russia. North Korean soldiers were previously dispatched to the western Russian region of Kursk, in order to recapture areas taken by Ukrainian troops during last summer's surprise counteroffensive. According to estimates by the Ukrainian intelligence service, a total of around 14,000 soldiers from North Korea fought in the region. Although it took a long time for the deployment of North Korean soldiers to be publicly recognized, North Korea's state television channel KCTV showed footage of Kim laying the North Korean flag over a coffin in late June - presumably mourning soldiers who died fighting in the Ukraine thanked North Korea for its help and declared that a memorial would be erected in Kursk for the fallen North Korean soldiers. In return for military aid, Russia is said to be supplying food to isolated North Korea, as well as supporting the country with the technical development of its missile programmes. There has been no official confirmation of this.

Taiwan deploys advanced US rockets in closely watched part of annual drills
Taiwan has begun deploying its newest and most precise strike weapons, high calibre rockets from the United States, as part of its annual live-fire drills to increase the island's ability to counter potential attacks from China. On Saturday, two armoured trucks with High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) were seen manoeuvring around the city of Taichung near Taiwan's central coast, on the fourth of 10 days of the Han Kuang exercise, its most comprehensive annual exercise, according to the Reuters news agency. Military spokesperson Colonel Chen Lian-jia said it would be crucial to conceal the HIMARS from enemy aerial reconnaissance, satellites, 'or even enemy operatives behind our lines' until the order to fire was given. China considers Taiwan its own province and has long threatened to use force to bring it under Beijing's control. Over the past five years, China has increased pressure around the island, staging a string of intense war games and daily naval and air force patrols around the territory. Earlier this week, China's Ministry of National Defense said the Han Kuang drills were 'nothing but a bluffing and self-deceiving trick'. China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs added that its opposition to US-Taiwan military ties was 'consistent and very firm'. On Thursday, Taiwanese President William Lai Ching-te said the exercises were being conducted based on 'large-scale, realistic combat drills'. Last year, Taiwan received the first 11 of the 29 HIMARS units, testing them for the first time in May. The weapons, which have a range of about 300km (190 miles), have the potential to strike coastal targets in China's southern province of Fujian on the other side of the Taiwan Strait. While the United States, Taiwan's biggest supplier of imported defensive weaponry, is bound by law to consider threats to the country as a 'major concern', it remains unclear if Washington, DC, under President Donald Trump's administration, would deploy forces to counter a possible Chinese attack. Reuters reported, quoting unnamed senior Taiwanese military officials, that the drills were unscripted and designed to replicate full combat conditions, starting with simulated enemy attacks and invasion scenarios. The drills aim to show China and the international community, including the US, that Taiwan is determined to defend itself against any Chinese attack, the officials said.
