Israeli airstrikes killed at least 49 Palestinians across Gaza from Friday night into Saturday, as ceasefire talks showed some progress amid ongoing attacks on homes and shelters.
Twelve people were killed near the Palestine Stadium in Gaza City, which had been sheltering families forced from their homes. Eight more were killed in their apartments, according to staff at Shifa hospital. Over 20 bodies were taken to Nasser hospital in Khan Younis, health officials said.
The latest attacks came as US President Donald Trump said on Friday that a ceasefire deal could be reached 'within the next week.' Israeli Minister for Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer is expected in Washington early next week for talks on Gaza, Iran, and regional escalation, according to a US official.
The US brokered a temporary ceasefire during the final days of Joe Biden's presidency, with involvement from Trump's incoming administration.
That agreement collapsed in March when Israel resumed its war on Gaza, launching widespread air and ground attacks that killed more than 400 people in the first days alone.
The renewed bombardment has intensified what humanitarian agencies describe as a man-made catastrophe, with entire neighborhoods flattened and access to food and medical aid repeatedly obstructed.
Since 18 March, Israeli forces have killed 6,008 Palestinians and wounded 20,591, according to Gaza's health ministry. The total death toll since the war began on 7 October 2023 stands at 56,331, with 132,632 wounded. Most of those killed have been women and children.
Around 50 captives remain in Gaza, fewer than half believed to be alive. Hamas has said it is prepared to release all remaining captives in exchange for an end to the war. Israel has refused, demanding Hamas's disarmament and exile—conditions the group rejects.
Israel continues to impose a blockade that has pushed much of Gaza's population to the brink of famine. After cutting off all food and supplies for more than two months, it began allowing limited aid deliveries in mid-May through the US- and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation.
The mechanism has been widely condemned by rights groups and UN agencies.
More than 500 Palestinians have been killed near aid sites since late May, most shot while attempting to reach food, according to Gaza's health ministry. Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) has described the system as 'slaughter masquerading as humanitarian aid.'
Witnesses say Israeli forces have opened fire on civilians approaching convoys. Despite mounting international outrage and calls for accountability, the Israeli military has offered no explanation for the repeated killings at aid distribution points.

However, the cumulative financial burden of military operations and heightened security costs is increasingly influencing domestic pricing structures. Traditionally, fuel prices in Israel are calculated at the end of each month based on the average oil prices in the Mediterranean market and the exchange rate between the shekel and the U.S. dollar—currently 3.38 shekels to the dollar. The final price also includes marketing fees, excise tax, and value-added tax (VAT). Inflation Pressures Mount The economic impact of the Iran-Israel conflict continues to ripple through the Israeli economy. Following the outbreak of war in Gaza earlier this year, the Israeli government raised VAT from 17% to 18%, contributing to an upward trend in consumer prices and inflation. 'The inflation crisis is not over,' said Danny Yardeni, Head of Nostro Management at Bank Leumi. 'There's pressure on rents due to the war, and not all airlines have resumed operations. But I believe the end of the crisis has reduced some of the uncertainty.' Yardeni added that the private consumption sector has weakened, with many businesses temporarily closed and households spending less amid the state of emergency. The government, for its part, has been forced to allocate significant funds for compensation, both for homeowners affected by missile strikes and for businesses disrupted during the hostilities. Egyptian FM: No Mideast Stability Without Palestinian Solution
H-Tayea Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty emphasized that Egypt continues to work tirelessly to secure a ceasefire in Gaza, stating that Cairo is engaged in coordinated efforts with Qatar and the United States to halt what he described as 'ongoing crimes and systematic starvation' in the Gaza Strip. These efforts have been sustained for over 21 months since the events of October 7, 2023. In an interview on the ON TV program Kelma Akhira, Abdelatty noted that the current geopolitical context is more favorable for reaching an agreement on Gaza, citing increased recognition among key international actors, especially the US, of Egypt's comprehensive vision. He stressed that peace and stability in the Middle East are impossible without addressing the root of the conflict: the Israeli-Palestinian issue, with the Palestinian cause at its core. 'The message is now clear to Israel: there will be no security or stability without resolving the Palestinian issue and achieving a just, comprehensive, and lasting peace,' he stated, adding that this stance is increasingly echoed by the European Union and other global powers. Responding to a question on recent remarks by US President Donald Trump about a potential Gaza agreement in the coming weeks, Abdel Aaty affirmed the seriousness of American engagement. 'This is true. The January 19 ceasefire agreement in Gaza would not have been possible without the intervention of the current US administration,' he said, pointing to Washington's influence and Egypt's desire for further American involvement. 2 Injured After Explosion Destroys Homes in Philadelphia
Israa Farhan A powerful explosion early Sunday morning in northern Philadelphia killed one person and injured two others, causing significant structural damage to several homes, according to US authorities.
