Tiong: Empower nurses to build stronger healthcare system
SIBU (May 17): Stakeholders and leaders must prioritise investment in nurses to create a healthcare environment where they feel valued, empowered, and supported, said Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Dato Sri Tiong King Sing.
Speaking at the Nurses Day celebration here last night, Tiong emphasised that nurses are not only caregivers but also educators, advocates, and essential pillars of the healthcare system.
'Nurses are the future of healthcare. We must provide them with the resources, support, and training they need for professional growth and well-being,' said the Bintulu MP and Dudong assemblyman.
He said the compassion and commitment shown by nurses not only impact their patients but also families and the broader community.
'It is their unwavering spirit that strengthens the very fabric of our economy. Healthy citizens lead to higher productivity, reduced healthcare costs, and an improved quality of life for all,' he said.
Tiong urged nurses to continue advocating for themselves and their profession, noting that their insights are vital in shaping healthcare policy.
'Your voices matter. Those in power must listen to you because you understand your patients' needs best,' he said.
Touching on the 2025 Nurses Day theme, 'Our Nurses, Our Future: Caring for Nurses Strengthens Economies', Tiong said it was especially relevant as the country faces increasing pressure on its healthcare system.
'The shortage of nurses means many of you are forced to multitask under tremendous pressure. Yet, your ability to provide optimal patient care despite these challenges speaks volumes about your resilience and dedication,' he said.
He described the event as the largest Nurses Night Dinner in history, uniting staff from Sibu Hospital, cluster hospitals, Rejang Medical Centre, and the Nursing Training Institute—a reflection of the strong camaraderie within the nursing community.
Tiong announced a contribution of RM10,000 to support annual activities for Sibu nurses, and pledged to sponsor 200 tables for next year's Appreciation Dinner for nurses and doctors at Sibu Hospital.
Also present at the event were Sibu Hospital director Dr Nathakumar Thirunavukkarasu, Sibu Divisional Medical Officer Dr The Jo Hun, Head of Nurses Nita Bakar, and event organiser Florence Ho.
In his remarks, Dr Nathakumar praised nurses as the backbone of healthcare, recalling the legacy of Florence Nightingale.
'When I see the lamp, I remember the Lady with the Lamp. Her observations and dedication during wartime changed hygiene practices and dramatically reduced soldier mortality,' he said.
He reminded nurses that they are not alone, adding: 'Today's times are challenging, and expectations are high, but nurses have proven time and again their strength and resilience.' healthcare nurses Tiong King Sing

The Democratic Action Party (DAP) lawmaker said a major portion of this funding will be used to procure 20 new computers. 'Those new devices will be distributed across key departments including the one-stop counter, plastic surgery clinic, emergency department, surgical wards, bed management unit, infection control unit, gynaecology ward, and female medical ward,' he said in a statement yesterday. Dr Yii added that the upgrade will significantly enhance the hospital's digital infrastructure, streamline work processes, and improve service quality for both patients and staff. The allocation will also cover the purchase of 10 chairs for the one-stop counter, two air-conditioning units for the ticketing counter and ID clinic, 50 portable drainage stands (PODS), and four infusion pumps. 'These upgrades are essential to improving the hospital's functionality, ensuring a more comfortable environment for patients and staff, and strengthening SGH's capacity to deliver timely and quality care,' he said. Dr Yii noted that SGH has long been one of the busiest and most vital healthcare institutions in the region, managing a consistently high patient volumes. He also reaffirmed his commitment to continue supporting the hospital's efforts to enhance its facilities services.

Oasis Home targets RM10 million plus annual revenue from new halal health and wellness product line
PUCHONG: Oasis Home Holding Bhd expects to generate more than RM10 million in yearly revenue from its new halal health supplement and wellness product line developed under a joint venture with livestream marketing agency GIMCare (M) Sdn Bhd. CEO Datuk Jaden Teoh Yee Seang said the figure is based on performance benchmarks from GIMCare and its parent company, GIMmedia, which currently records RM30 million in gross merchandise value monthly across livestream and e-commerce channels. 'GIMCare is doing, in similar but not in the same category we're developing, over RM4 million to RM5 million in monthly revenue. So, if we're saying our yearly target is RM10 million, I think that's a comfortable and not exaggerating estimate. I think it's an attainable target,' he told reporters at the joint venture agreement signing ceremony today between Oasis Home's wholly owned subsidiary, Oasis Wellness International Sdn Bhd, and livestream marketing agency GIMCare (M). Teoh said the upcoming wellness range will prioritise strict regulatory compliance and halal certification. 'We are very good in sourcing the ingredients from overseas especially those who have trademark and also comes with clinical research, the ingredients of the supplements.' Teoh said the joint venture aims to tap into halal markets in Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam, which have sizeable Muslim populations. 'For example, one of our guests today is from the Ministry of Health who works closely with counterparts in Thailand and Indonesia. If we meet the local requirements, adapting our products to regional markets will be straightforward,' he added. Teoh said Oasis Home's direct-to-consumer business model built on digital sales channels enables cost-efficiency and affordability. 'We don't pay rental or carry heavy operating costs. That's why we can offer premium wellness products at accessible prices. Wellness and healthcare don't have to be expensive but they must comply with regulatory standards.' The joint venture company, OG Alliance Sdn Bhd, will be incorporated with a start-up capital of RM500,000, with Oasis Wellness holding a 51% stake and GIMCare owning the remainder. GIMCare is a wholly owned subsidiary of GIMmedia Sdn Bhd, a multichannel network and top-tier livestream enabler recognised by platforms such as TikTok, Shopee and Lazada. The initial product pipeline includes marine collagen powder drinks, skin health supplements and children's immunity boosters. The products will be distributed via major platforms including TikTok, Shopee and Lazada. OG Alliance is expected to be incorporated by early September, with its first product launch scheduled for the end of the year. Teoh said digital platforms are driving growth in the wellness space, 'In July 2025, TikTok's wellness category alone recorded over RM80 million in monthly revenue. According to IMARC Group, Malaysia's health and wellness market is projected to grow from US$11.4 billion (RM48 billion) in 2024 to US$18 billion by 2033, at a compounded annual growth rate of 4.6%.'

Zayn Rayyan not neglected or abused, child psychologist tells court

Dr Noor Aishah Rosli, 49, the founder of the CPC International psychology clinic in Bandar Baru Bangi, confirmed that she had reviewed the reports provided by the defence. When questioned by lawyer Haresh Mahadevan, Dr Noor Aishah said there was no evidence in the reports suggesting that Zayn Rayyan had suffered neglect or abuse. "The reports show no indication of neglect or abuse," the fifth defence witness said during examination-in-chief in the proceedings of Ismanira Abdul Manaf, who faces charges of child neglect involving Zayn Rayyan. Dr Noor Aishah elaborated on the definition of neglect, explaining that the American Psychiatric Association (APA) outlines various forms, including emotional, physical, and educational neglect. She emphasised that neglect must occur over a consistent period to be classified as such. "If a child misses lunch because the guardian is sick, it wouldn't be considered neglect. "But if the child consistently receives inadequate food and is expected to find food themselves, this could be classified as neglect,' she said. In relation to the amended charge against Ismanira, which refers to neglect causing potential physical injury to the child, Dr Noor Aishah pointed out that the use of the word "likely" in the charge implies uncertainty and does not definitively point to physical injury. When questioned whether the amended charge clearly indicated neglect by the accused, the witness responded that it was not specified in the charge. On July 21, Judge Syahliza Warnoh ordered Ismanira to enter her defence after the prosecution successfully established a prima facie case against the woman, while her husband, Zaim Ikhwan Zahari, 30, was acquitted and discharged. The couple was accused of neglecting their autistic son, Zayn Rayyan, in a manner likely to cause physical injury between noon on Dec 5 and 9.55 pm on Dec 6, 2023, in the vicinity of Block R, Idaman Apartment, Damansara Damai, extending to a nearby river. They were charged under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years' imprisonment, a fine of up to RM50,000, or both, upon conviction.
