Pensioner dies after car crashes down embankment onto railway
The alarm was raised yesterday afternoon at about 3.19pm when people spotted a silver car on the railway line near Stray Rein in Harrogate.
The out-of-place vehicle caught their attention from nearby Royal Bridge as it had landed on its roof.
When officers inspected the Volkswagen Golf, they found the driver, a man in his 70s, inside.
Despite the efforts of the emergency services, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
His family are being supported by specialist officers.
The man was travelling on York Place before his car swerved from the road and fell down the steep embankment. More Trending
Superintendent Andy Nunns from North Yorkshire Police said: 'There is currently a scene in place for collision investigation work to take place.
'York Place in Harrogate is likely to remain closed for most of this evening and the railway line between Harrogate and Leeds is likely to be closed for most of the night.
'We will continue to work with Network Rail and the British Transport Police to minimise disruption.
'My thoughts at this time remain very much with the man's family and I would like to thank the public for their patience.'

Nato forced to scramble warplanes for 13th time in weeks after Putin's attack
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Vladimir Putin unleashed yet another round of bombardments on Ukraine – close to the borders of four Western nations – forcing Nato to scramble its warplanes. It is the 13th time in a few weeks that the alliance has publicly admitted to deploying jets in response to a widespread Russian attack, but the number could be much higher. Missiles and drones pounded the Ukrainian city of Ivano-Frankivsk – one of the heaviest attacks in the war – reaching between 60 and 105 miles from Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania. For the past two months, Russia's nighttime strikes have strained Ukraine's air defences, and last night was no different. At least one person has been killed and seven others injured in Kyiv, where its 3.7 million residents are exhausted and on edge. Explosions lit up the night sky as the high-pitched whine of drone engines echoed off the walls of the capital's high-rise buildings. Mayor Vitali Klitschko said rescuers and medics were working on sites in four districts. A subway station in central Kyiv, commercial property, shops, houses and a kindergarten have been heavily damaged. Footage shows the Lukianivska metro station filling with smoke and debris as residents who were shielded inside the makeshift bomb shelter scrambled for safety. Ukraine's air force said that Russia launched 426 drones and 24 missiles overnight across the country, but that only 23 drones hit their targets. At the scene of a strike, dazed residents stood amid shattered glass and scorched walls, surveying the damage after a drone hit the lower floors of an apartment building. In the region of Ivano-Frankivsk, several hundred miles west of Kyiv, four people including a 12-year-old boy were injured in the overnight attack, according to the state emergencies service. Attack drones were also intercepted over the regions of Sumy, Kirovohrad, Khmelnytskyi, Mykolaiv, Poltava, and Kherson. More Trending Volodymyr Zelensky said on X: 'Throughout the night, Russia launched more than 420 drones and over 20 missiles, including ballistic ones. 'The waves of attacks lasted all night and continued into the morning. In the morning, 'shaheds' once again targeted the Kharkiv region. 'During the shelling, mobile fire groups, army aviation, electronic warfare units, Air Force warriors, and interceptor drones were in action. 'Many targets were shot down – but unfortunately, not all.' Get in touch with our news team by emailing us at webnews@ For more stories like this, check our news page. 'Nightmare' Neighbour fined for rat infested garden in Melton Mowbray
A man has been handed a court bill for £1,200 for failing to tidy his 'nightmare' overgrown garden. Richard Bates, who lives in Melton Mowbray near Leicester, was approached by his local council in September 2024 over the overgrown vegetation at the front of his house. He later got formal warnings and a fixed penalty notice, before council workers eventually moved in to tidy up the site. They were tasked with clearing the 'very overgrown vegetation and any other items that could provide food and harbour vermin'. While carrying out the work, they found a rat's nest in the garden, which Melton Borough Council described as a 'nightmare'. On July 9 at Leicester Magistrates' Court, the matter was found proved in Bates' absence and he received a £500. More Trending He was also ordered to pay £500 towards the council's costs and a victim charge of £200, while the council said he would also be recharged for the cost of the works. Bates was found proved of failing to comply with a community protection notice. Councillor Sarah Cox, portfolio holder for corporate finance, property and resources at the council, said: 'Even with support from our teams, the resident failed to adhere to the conditions set out to him, forcing us to take necessary action to keep the area clean and free of pests. 'We take issues such as anti-social behaviour very seriously. 'If a supportive approach fails, we will not hesitate to enforce and act to keep our communities a safe and thriving place to live.' Man made friend strip before 'parading' him through Welsh village naked
A man who beat up his friend and made him remove his clothes before 'parading' him naked through the streets has been jailed. Swansea Crown Court heard that Karl Griffiths, 42, attacked his friend and the friend's partner during a gathering at a flat in Penclawdd on January 30. Griffiths, who the judge said was likely under the influence of alcohol or drugs, had taken the phones of the friend and his partner and accused them of stealing from him. The prosecuting lawyer said he then beat them using crutches while shouting abuse at the couple. Griffiths then 'demanded' that his friend take his clothes off and told him they were 'going for a walk,' the prosecutor said. He proceeded to force his naked friend outside and 'essentially paraded him naked around the streets' in the middle of the village. The ordeal was filmed by onlookers in the village, before continuing when they returned to the flat, the court heard. Griffiths then smashed a TV and called police, saying: 'Someone better come and get me, I'm going to kill someone'. He was arrested and told police he had gone to his friend's flat after arguing with his mother. Griffiths admitted to giving his friend 'a clip' and hitting him with 'a few punches'. In an impact statement which was read to the court by the prosecution barrister, the victim said the experience had a massive impact on his mental health and left him feeling unsafe in his own home. But he added that while what the defendant did to him and his partner was 'not right' he did not support the prosecution. Griffiths had previously pleaded guilty to battery, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, criminal damage, and kidnapping when he appeared in the dock for sentencing. The court heard he has a 'substantial criminal history' including non-domestic burglaries, dishonesty matters, weapons offences, and supplying Class A drugs. More Trending James Hartson, acting for Griffiths, said whatever grievance the defendant may have had with his friend it 'could not remotely justify the level of humiliation and violence' handed out. He said he had seen the mobile phone footage of the incident and said it was clear the victim was distressed as 'he was marched through the centre of Penclawdd in a state of undress'. Judge Huw Rees said Griffiths' behaviour had been 'irrational' and probably done under the influence of drink and drugs, but added it was clear from references he had read that other people thought well of the defendant and regarded him as a 'kindly man'. Griffiths was was sentenced to 31 months in prison. His barrister said he hoped his friend could eventually forgive him.
