Golden State Warriors jersey history - No. 16 - Irv Torgoff (1949)

USA Todaya day ago

The Golden State Warriors have had over 600 players don the more than 60 jersey numbers used by their players over the more than 75 years of existence the team has enjoyed in its rich and storied history.
Founded in 1946 during the Basketball Association of America (BAA -- a precursor league of the NBA) era, the team has called home the cities of Philadelphia, San Francisco, Oakland, and even San Diego.
To commemorate the players who wore those numbers, Warriors Wire is covering the entire history of jersey numbers and the players who sported them since the founding of the team. For this article, we begin with the second of nine players who wore the No. 16 jersey for the Warriors.
That player would be Golden State forward alum Irv Torgoff. After ending his college career at LIU, Torgoff joined the (defunct) Washington Capitols in their (and the BAA's) first-ever season of existence in 1946.
The Brooklyn, New York native would play the first two seasons of his pro career with the Caps. He would also play for the (also defunct) Baltimore Bullets before he was dealt to the (then) Philadelphia (now, Golden State) Warriors in 1949 for his final season in the league.
During his time suiting up for the Warriors, Torgoff wore only jersey No. 16 and put up 2.7 points per game.

Warriors' Jonathan Kuminga Has Clear Request on Next Contract Heading Into Free Agency

Warriors' Jonathan Kuminga Has Clear Request on Next Contract Heading Into Free Agency originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Jonathan Kuminga is commanding quite a bit of attention heading into the offseason. Advertisement A divorce between the young forward and the Golden State Warriors has seemed likely since the club landed Jimmy Butler at the trade deadline. There's less room for Kuminga to develop into a star now as the Warriors will focus on adding complementary pieces to Stephen Curry, Draymond Green and Bulter on their roster. Kuminga, on the other hand, wants to be an All-Star. With the Warriors' current situation and roster in place, it's hard for the G League Ignite product to explore and develop his game to that point. The two sides are headed into free agency with big decisions to make. Kuminga wants more opportunity, while the Warriors want to complement their aging trio and keep financial flexibility. Advertisement A recent report regarding Kuminga's offseason wishes might just get in the way of that, though. According to Clutch Points' Brett Siegel, the 22-year-old forward is aiming for more than $30 million annually. 'The Warriors have made it clear that they want to maintain financial flexibility moving forward. Keeping Kuminga would come at a significant cost for Golden State, as he wants a deal that pays him over $30 million per year," Siegel reports. If Kuminga got the opportunity to play in a heavy-usage role, his asking for this annual salary wouldn't sound all that crazy. Chicago Bulls guard Josh Giddey is a prime example. He was traded from the Oklahoma City Thunder to a situation that allowed him to play in a role an All-Star or future star might expect, and he played his way into a big contract. Advertisement The Warriors might find value in a sign-and-trade, which allows Kuminga to find a desired opportunity while earning the most he can. The most value they could recoup, though, would come at the trade deadline next season, as the Warriors could trade Kuminga's full salary, whereas a sign-and-trade would only allow them to return a partial portion of his salary. Warriors' Giannis Antetokounmpo Dream Not Dead After Latest Insider Update

Warriors' Giannis Antetokounmpo Dream Not Dead After Latest Insider Update originally appeared on Athlon Sports. A lot of people had given up hope on the idea of Giannis Antetokounmpo requesting a trade away from the Milwaukee Bucks this offseason. Shams Charania believes it is too early to rule it out entirely. Advertisement The Greek Freak has spent the entirety of his career in Milwaukee to this point. The initial silence gave those following the situation an early impression that it was going to continue that way. However, this may just be the calm before the storm. Teams like the Golden State Warriors should still have every reason to monitor the situation as it develops in Milwaukee. Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Adams-USA TODAY Sports Charania appeared on Get Up for ESPN (h/t Bleacher Report) on Thursday morning. The NBA insider expressed that if a deal gets done for Antetokounmpo, it could take some time. "[There's] a lot of observing," Charania told viewers. "He's been there for 12 years, so there's going to be that equity given to the Bucks to see what they do during the draft week, free agency week." Advertisement Charania continued, "How much can they improve this team in their moves? He said it, he wants to compete for championships. Can the Bucks make those championship moves? His future, I've said it for the last few weeks, it won't be tied to the draft, it won't be tied to free agency." The biggest hint dropped about when the dominos could start falling for this situation was included in the following statement. Charania mentioned, "If there is a resolution on Giannis Antetokounmpo, it could be later in the summer." This puts potential suitors like the Warriors in a tricky position. Putting all the eggs into the Antetokounmpo basket could limit overall roster upgrades that can be done in the meantime. Advertisement If the Warriors really believe as though they have a shot here, it would be wise to pursue it. Finding a cautious middle ground where upgrades can still be made while positioning themselves for the looming pursuit can be challenging, but ultimately worthwhile. Warriors Predicted to Trade Jonathan Kuminga For Depth in 3-Team Deal With Bulls, Hornets

Warriors Predicted to Trade Jonathan Kuminga For Depth in 3-Team Deal With Bulls, Hornets originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Jonathan Kuminga and the Golden State Warriors could both get what they want with today's NBA trade idea. Kuminga gets a fresh start with a new team. The Warriors get to pivot into numerous assets for their troubles. Advertisement After an inconsistent season, with a fluctuating role throughout it all, many believe the Warriors forward will be on his way out of the Bay Area in free agency. The problem with that is the lack of cap space for potential suitors. This gives the Warriors leverage. A sign-and-trade involving Kuminga would allow them to retain some value for the departing youngster. Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards drives past Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Johnson-Imagn Images Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report suggested the following deal to help all parties involved walk away satisfied. Chicago Bulls get: Jonathan Kuminga (from Warriors). Golden State Warriors get: Lonzo Ball (from Bulls), Jalen Smith (from Bulls), Josh Okogie (from Hornets), 2026 Portland Trail Blazers protected first-rounder (from Bulls), 2029 second-rounder (from Hornets), 2029 Denver Nuggets second-rounder (from Hornets), 2031 second-rounder (from Hornets), 2031 Phoenix Suns second-rounder (from Hornets). Advertisement Charlotte Hornets get: Moses Moody (from Warriors), Jevon Carter (from Bulls). The Bulls get the opportunity to see if they can tap into Kuminga's potential in this deal. Pincus wrote, "Kuminga immediately makes Chicago more formidable in a wide-open Eastern Conference, especially considering the cost. Ball is well-liked, but Ayo Dosunmu and other options can fill his minutes. Carter and Smith don't move the needle for the team, so the heftiest price is the first-round pick from the Blazers, but that has enough protection that it won't ever be in the lottery and may eventually convert into a 2028 second-rounder." Meanwhile, the Warriors address several needs, adding a backup point guard, a big man, and wing depth, plus a healthy return of draft capital. It costs the Warriors also having to surrender Moody in the process, but Pincus thought it was worth it considering how much Kuminga would limit their financial flexibility in a potential return.
