Yes, Jack Black And Jason Momoa Have ‘A Minecraft Movie' Action Figures

Forbes08-04-2025
A blockbuster like A Minecraft Movie isn't complete until it has action figures of Jack Black's Steve and Jason Momoa's Garrett.
As the Star Wars franchise, Marvel Cinematic Universe and DC Universe have shown, action figures can be an effective marketing tool for a film. Before too long, the MCU will have 6-inch plastic action figures of Florence Pugh's Yelena Bolova and David Harbor's Red Guardian hitting the shelves to help raise awareness of the Marvel antihero movie Thunderbolts* from Hasbro's Marvel Legends line — and fans can certainly expect the same from director James Gunn's Superman reboot with figures of David Corenswet's Man of Steel.
The marketability of such a monolithic property as Minecraft certainly isn't lost on Mattel, as the toy company has been making toys based on the world's biggest video game for years. And while Mattel has produced figures of Steve in block form before — along with Piglins, Skeletons and a variety of other characters and environments in the Minecraft Universe, the toy company is stepping up to produce action figures of the characters who appear in human form in A Minecraft Movie.
As such, Mattel has made available among its selection of A Minecraft Movie products 4-inch scale action figures of Black and Momoa's Steve and Garrett, as well as Sebastian Hansen's Henry.
Steve is currently available as a single-carded figure and a combination pack with his dog, Dennis, while Garrett and Henry are only available in playset with wing accessories to aid in their escape from the Piglins. The set also includes a Piglin Warrior. Steve's accessories include a backpack, a leg of Overworld-style chicken and naturally, a sword.
Other single-carded figures include block figures of Steve's dog Dennis, a skeleton warrior and a creeper. Mattel has produced several other action figures and playsets in 4-inch scale in combination packs as well.
The action figures and playsets are widely available at brick-and-mortar and online retailers.
While A Minecraft Movie was projected by industry trade publications to open with as low as $65 million or as high as $100 million in domestic ticket sales in the film's first Friday to Sunday frame, audiences proved that there was a much bigger appetite for the big-screen adaptation of Mojang Studios' 2011 smash hit video game Minecraft.
While final estimates pegged A Minecraft Movie's take at $157 million, the number grew to $163 million by the time final numbers were released Monday.
Along with the film's international take over the weekend, A Minecraft Movie's opening weekend take was $313.7 million against a $150 million production budget before prints and advertising costs.
A Minecraft Movie is playing in 4,263 North American theaters, a count that could potentially rise when the film enters its second-weekend frame on Friday.
In addition to Jack Black, Jason Momoa and Sebastian Hansen, A Minecraft Movie stars Emmy Meyers, Danielle Brooks and Jennifer Coolidge, as well as the voices of Jemaine Clement, Rachel House and Matt Berry.
Rated PG, A Minecraft Movie is directed by Napoleon Dynamite filmmaker Jared Hess.

‘Rogue One' Director Has No Plans to Make Another ‘Star Wars' Movie: 'I'm Very Happy to Move on'

While filmmaker Gareth Edwards appreciates Rogue One: A Star Wars Story's success, he's focused on the future. When recently asked by Business Insider if he would make another Star Wars film, the director responded, 'I'm very happy to move on and do my thing.' More from The Hollywood Reporter 'Jurassic World Rebirth' Team "High-Fived Each Other" When They Got Praise From Steven Spielberg Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey and 'Jurassic World Rebirth' Cast Stun London at World Premiere 'Star Wars' "Looks Terrible" in Screening of Long Lost Original 1977 Version Rogue One, which starred Felicity Jones and Diego Luna, was the first spinoff movie in the Star Wars franchise. The 2016 film followed a group of unlikely heroes who band together on a mission to steal the plans for the Death Star, the Empire's ultimate weapon of destruction. The film went on to gross more than $1 billion worldwide at the box office and earned more praise after the release of the Disney+ prequel series Andor. While some fans have called Rogue One the best Star Wars movie since Disney bought Lucasfilm in 2012, Edwards disagreed. 'I don't agree with it, but I appreciate it,' he said. 'I'm very grateful that people say nice things.' As the film approaches its 10th anniversary next year, the Jurassic World Rebirth director added that he went into Rogue One thinking about its longevity in cinema, not necessarily its opening box office numbers. 'What you have to keep in your pocket as you go through making other films is that it's not about how people feel the day it gets released, it's how people feel about it 10, 20 years from now,' he explained. 'When you make a movie, you're living at least a year from now, you're trying to imagine what it's like, all these decisions you're making, what they are going to be like a year from now when this movie is released, what's the audience going to think?' 'And as the movie comes out, you go, 'I'm going to pretend I'm living 10 years from now, and it doesn't matter what people say in the moment,'' Edwards continued. 'It's the kid who comes up to you 20 years from now and goes, 'Oh my god, I loved that movie!' I think that's the reward.' Jim Shooter, Editor Who ‘Saved the Comics Industry,' Dies at 73

Jim Shooter, a hard-driving giant of a comic-book editor who took the helm at Marvel at the tender age of 27, then spent nearly a decade revolutionizing the way superhero stories are written, drawn and sold, died on Monday at his home in Nyack, N.Y. He was 73. His son, Ben Shooter, confirmed the death but did not specify a cause. Mr. Shooter was diagnosed with esophageal cancer last year. Powerfully built, with a looming 6-foot 7-inch frame, Mr. Shooter dominated the comic-book world for much of the 1980s, reinvigorating an art form that had been in decline by finding new markets and new readers. Though he was not yet 30 when he took over at Marvel in 1978, he was already an industry veteran. He sold his first comic story, to DC, Marvel's rival, when he was just 14, and he worked for both companies while still a teenager. As editor in chief at Marvel, he rationalized what had been a chaotic operation, instituting a coherent editing process and driving his staff to meet deadlines. He pushed into the growing comic-store market, targeting dedicated fans over the casual reader. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.
