Green Light for New Aberavon Aldi and Starbucks Development

Proposals for a new Aldi food store and Starbucks coffee shop on vacant land known locally as Burrows Yard in Aberavon, Port Talbot, have been approved.
Members of Neath Port Talbot Council's Planning Committee gave the go ahead for the development earlier this month. It will involve 141 parking spaces, a number of bicycle parking hoops and 18 Electric Vehicle (EV) charging points.
The Starbucks outlet will come with an associated drive-thru facility. The planning permission also covers landscaping and drainage works and access onto the adjacent Afan Way and Water Street.
The new development will also mean Active Travel benefits for Water Street. There will be a new pedestrian / cycle route from Water Street (3.5m wide) and a widened footway along Water Street's southern flank (3.2m wide).
Cllr Jeremy Hurley, Neath Port Talbot Council's Cabinet Member for Climate Change and Economic Growth, said:
'This proposal will result in the redevelopment of what has been derelict, unsightly, underused and vacant land.
'The project will contribute to creating a more viable 'destination' for shoppers both travelling to Port Talbot via car or using active travel.'
A planning officers' report said: 'It is considered the proposal represents an appropriate form of development that integrates well within the surrounding urban context, with no adverse impacts upon visual amenity, residential amenity, flood risk or drainage, land contamination, highway or pedestrian safety nor biodiversity.'
Public consultation led to 317 representations of support with just three objections.
The planning committee was told the development fits in with Future Wales: The National Plan 2040 which is the national development framework, setting the direction for development in Wales to 2040.
The development plan sets out a strategy for addressing key national priorities through the planning system, including sustaining and developing a vibrant economy, achieving decarbonisation and climate resilience, developing strong ecosystems and improving the health and wellbeing of communities.

Choosing luxury can reap rewards in the EV market

To some people, luxury is synonymous with wasteful. But small details can make all the difference to the pleasure of our daily lives. Not only do they feel good, but the right textures, soothing sounds and optimised experiences can deliver more and last longer, offering value as well as sustainability. If you're choosing an electric vehicle (EV) in today's market, you may be weighing up whether opting for luxury is worth it. Here are six ways BMW's EV range, in particular the BMW iX1 xDrive30, unifies quality considerations, sustainability goals and cost benefits to make luxury worthwhile – and all the more attainable. BMW offers full EV and plug-in hybrid EV (PHEV) vehicles in sedan and SUV configurations to give drivers options that suit their lifestyles. These vehicles offer ranges of up to 624km. With the iX1 xDrive30, you can enjoy a range of up to 400km, alongside 120km of recharge range in just 10 minutes and a 10% to 80% recharge in 29 minutes at public high-speed charging stations.* EV driving offers returns through cheaper fuel costs. Expect weekly running costs in the tens, not hundreds of dollars; they will even be free if you're charging from solar. In addition, EV servicing is about 30% cheaper than servicing for ICE vehicles, BMW says. BMW provides easy access to options that can make an EV purchase more attainable. EVs valued up to the luxury car tax threshold are eligible for the fringe benefit tax exemption, and BMW offers EV models below the threshold. Novated leasing options can provide further tax savings, while the BMW Full Circle program allows you to know upfront what the value of your BMW will be at the end of your lease term, giving you flexible options – and peace of mind – when the term ends. Buying a BMW means you get advanced driving features included as standard. In the iX1 xDrive30 you'll find the BMW Live Cockpit Professional, featuring a display that curves all information towards the driver. You will also find a full-colour head-up display offering speed and navigation insights within your field of vision. The built-in navigation system receives automatic map updates and includes augmented reality navigation that make instructions crystal-clear. The iX1 xDrive30 includes Parking Assistant Plus, with surround view cameras to give a 360-degree view around the vehicle, and automatic reversing and parking features that can make tricky situations a breeze. Your vehicle also monitors for service issues, including tyre pressure, and will notify you if it needs help with proactive maintenance. Using the My BMW app, you can precondition the vehicle cabin to make sure everything is comfortable before you settle in for your journey. Once you set off, the iX1 xDrive30 offers a high-definition entertainment system, featuring Harman Kardon speakers – available with the enhancement pack – and your display includes fully integrated film and television streaming for passengers through the BMW Operating System 9. If you want to wait in your BMW while it's charging, there is plenty to entertain you. Charging solutions are expanding across Australia, making it easier to find power on the go. The iX1 xDrive30 charge settings can be personalised to suit local needs and take advantage of fast charging or optimised charging that prolongs the life of the battery. With the mode 2 and 3 charging cables, owners can charge across Australia. The BMW Wallbox is a home unit for managing an overnight charge, so your EV is ready to go in the morning. It will precondition the vehicle's climate control while on charge to further minimise power drain once you're on the road. The My BMW app offers remote insights into current vehicle charge and the time remaining to reach 100% when charging. The BMW iX1 xDrive30 has been designed to bring you pleasure from the moment you approach it. A dynamic light carpet appears to guide you to your door and the BMW Iconic Sounds, composed by Hans Zimmer, welcome you as you enter. These sounds also provide the soundtrack to your EV on the road, with customisable options to suit your personal driving style. A feature of the enhanced model, the panoramic glass sunroof in the iX1 xDrive30 offers automatic opening and closing, with an integrated wind deflector to minimise turbulence. On particularly hot days, an opaque roller blind can ensure your comfort. The iX1 xDrive30's seat controls include lumbar support and massage functions to promote fatigue-free driving. Buying an EV is a significant decision. Car manufacturers know drivers are doing more than selecting a new car; they're joining a community. BMW supports its EV drivers with a library of how-to video guides on its YouTube channel, and offers support to help drivers make the most of the luxury EV experience. The Electrification Genius team, made up of car experts, is available on the phone and email, Monday to Friday, to answer any questions about making the switch to an electric car. Discover the BMW range of electric cars. *Electrical consumption and range is based upon the Combined Driving Test Cycle in accordance with ADR 81/02 on purpose-built test vehicles and is provided for comparative purposes only. Actual range will vary in real-world conditions depending on many factors, including traffic conditions, driving habits, prevailing conditions and your vehicle's equipment, condition and use.

The Aldi grocery item crowned Australia's best - as shoppers race to stock up before it sells out

Shoppers are going wild for Aldi 's Lazzio coffee after it was officially crowned the best coffee in Australia - again. The budget supermarket's exclusive brew has taken out the prestigious Overall Champion - Large Chain category at the 2025 Golden Bean Australasia Awards, marking the sixth time in seven years that Aldi has earned the title. Aldi's coffee aisle has become something of a battleground for loyal fans, with one shopper telling FEMAIL: 'I used to spend $6 a day at cafes, now I don't even miss them. Lazzio is genuinely that good.' The budget supermarket chain's Buying Director Daniel Quinlan said the win reflects the supermarket's commitment to delivering quality across the board - from pantry staples to premium products. 'This win is a proud reflection of the consistent quality and value Aldi delivers to customers across their grocery shop, including the perfect beans for their morning brew,' he said. Roasted locally in Melbourne, the popular Lazzio range offers shoppers a 'premium café experience at home' - without the café price tag. 'It's clear Aussies appreciate great coffee at a great price - and we're proud to deliver exactly that.' Starting at just 18c per cup, the beans have become a household staple - and Aldi says they're roasting a staggering 75 tonnes of coffee each week to meet demand. In addition to the top title, the Lazzio range scooped up eight more medals in the Large Chain-Store Espresso and Milk categories, cementing its status as the most awarded supermarket coffee in the country. Several caffeine fans flocked online to share their love for the award-winning blend. 'Honestly, this stuff saved my bank account. It's strong, smooth, and never bitter,' a corporate worker said. 'This coffee got me through three newborns and two lockdowns - it deserves a medal!' a mum wrote. 'People always ask me where I get my beans and are shocked when I say Aldi. They think I'm joking!' one wrote. 'The dark roast is elite. If you know, you know,' an Aussie added. The full Lazzio line-up includes everything from ground coffee to luxe blends and single origin beans from Brazil, Colombia, and soon, Guatemala and Ethiopia, with two new products landing on Wednesday, 23 July. The new Lazzio Luxe Reserve Single Origin Guatemala and Ethiopia 500g varieties have already scooped Gold and Silver in their respective categories - before they've even hit shelves. Here's what's currently available: Lazzio Medium Coffee Beans 1kg - $19.99 Lazzio Dark Coffee Beans 1kg - $17.99 Lazzio Medium Ground Coffee 500g - $10.99 Lazzio Dark Ground Coffee 500g - $10.99 Lazzio Single Origin Brazil Beans 1kg - $24.99 Lazzio Single Origin Colombia Beans 1kg - $24.99 Lazzio Luxe Blend 1kg - $27.99 For coffee lovers on a budget or just looking for their new go-to blend, Aldi's Golden Bean triumph confirms what regulars have known for years: Lazzio really is Australia's best-kept (and best-priced) coffee secret.

New lighter wine bottles will be introduced as part of the retailers ongoing commitment to reducing unnecessary packaging. The new bottles will weigh in at a staggeringly low 300g. This takes the average weight across the range from 409g to just 371g. Additional bottles with reduced weights are expected to follow later in the year. Aldi will be the first UK supermarket to make the massive change. The new 300g bottles are now being used for popular lines such as Grapevine Sauvignon Blanc and Grapevine Merlot. The move is part of a broader initiative that has seen the supermarket reduce bottle weights since 2022. Aldi has said this has resulted in the removal of approximately 12.7 million empty bottles from circulation each year. Luke Emery, National Sustainability Director at Aldi UK, said: 'We're always looking for practical ways to reduce our environmental footprint while continuing to deliver the unbeatable quality and value our customers expect. Expert reveals the top everyday food pairings for bargain supermarket wine 'By working closely with our wine suppliers, we're introducing a simple yet impactful change that's already cutting down on materials and associated carbon. "It's one of the many steps we're taking as we continue to explore how we can continue to reduce bottle weights across our range and make our products more sustainable over time.' Aldi's new wine bottles will weigh a whopping 65 grams less than the standard 365 gram bottles. The retailer has said the roll out of the new bottles has already begun and will be completed by 2025. A statement on the Aldi website reads: "Who said that wine bottles must be made of glass, measuring 750 milliliters, and weighing 365 grams? "Following our mission to optimise packaging, we discovered new and creative ways to package the so-called drink of the gods. "All versions indicated a significant reduction in raw material use, as well as a decrease in carbon emissions - as they say, many roads lead to Rome."
