Legendary Filipino Singer & Voice Of Iconic Song 'Anak,' Freddie Aguilar, Passes Away Aged 72
The passing of the 72-year-old, who entered Filipino politics later in life, was confirmed on 27th May (Tuesday), by George Briones, general counsel of the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP), where Aguilar was former national executive vice president.
Ferdinand Pascual Aguilar began composing music at just 14 and shot to international fame in the late 1970s with the iconic song 'Anak' ('Child'), a poignant reflection on remorse and reconciliation. Inspired by his own experiences after leaving home at 18, 'Anak' became the Philippines' best-selling single of all time, with over 30 million copies sold worldwide, and being translated into 20 languages.
Aguilar's music transcended entertainment, often serving as a vehicle for social commentary. His rendition of 'Bayan Ko' ('My Country') became an unofficial anthem during the 1986 People Power Revolution, rallying Filipinos in their fight for democracy. Throughout his career, he remained a vocal advocate for the marginalised, using his songs to highlight issues of poverty, injustice, and national pride.
Known for his social activism, it came as no surprise that Aguilar would later devote his life to politics. Among his many political achievements was the introduction of the 'Tax-Free Balikbayan Box' Act, which aimed to provide better support and protection for Overseas Foreign Workers (OFWs) from the Philippines.
Condolences have been pouring in over the star's death – from fans and celebrities alike – with many promising that he will live on through them and the music he leaves behind. His legacy shall be remembered with the music that he produced and the hardships he went through, which continue to inspire and resonate with generations of Filipinos and music lovers around the world.

Theatre show 'Anak-Anak Malik' boldly reimagines Lorca's timeless themes

Photo: Tat Chin A classic tale of control and confinement finds new life in Anak-Anak Malik, a local adaptation of Spanish poet-playwright Federico García Lorca's The House Of Bernarda Alba, which reimagines grief as the backdrop for a clash between tradition, isolation, and rebellion. Set not in Andalusia but in an isolated 1970s fishing village off Penang called Pulau Aman, this 90-minute theatre production (with no intermission) runs for five shows at Pentas 2, KLPac from July 24–27. Anak-Anak Malik, adapted by playwright Yusof Bakar, is presented as part of The Actors Studio Seni Teater Rakyat series, with support from The Actors Studio Foundation and KLPac. Performed in Bahasa Malaysia with English subtitles, it features an all-male ensemble: Aidil Rosli, Ammar Aqsya, Aniq Syahmi, Asraf Zulk, Danish Zakwan, Mark Beau De Silva, SaifulWazien, Sudhan Nair, Sunio Rushairi and Ubai Talib. Photo: Tat Chin Anak-Anak Malik also arrives in what is arguably one of the busiest months for the local theatre scene, with acclaimed productions such as Persiapan Seorang Aktor, the hard-hitting Burden Of Proof and the revival of Jit Murad's Visits already drawing significant attention in the past few weeks. Nonetheless, the addition of more quality theatre to the calendar is always to be welcomed. Emotional turmoil The story follows Malik, a grieving father who imposes a strict 100-day mourning period on his five sons after the death of their mother. As the sons resist, tensions build behind the family's walls until tragedy unfolds. Director Christopher Ling, who previously staged a musical version of The House Of Bernarda Alba in 2010, returns with a fresh perspective. 'I have always been captivated by the play, its themes of power, control and familial love hauntingly relevant. I was intrigued to see how an all-male community would react if placed in the same situation as Bernarda Alba's household. The all-male cast brings in a new lens of masculinity mixed with the fractured father and son relationship that we are, unfortunately, familiar with,' says Ling, who is also associate artistic director of The Actors Studio. At Pentas 2, KPac, the choice of setting was intentional, seating audiences as if floating at sea and peering into a lone house at the heart of the theatre. This distinctly Malaysian reinterpretation blends universal themes with local nuance. 'Pulau Aman in the 1970s affords us a strange sense of isolation. Heightened by the lack of Internet and other forms of telecommunication, Malik's family is literally disconnected from the world around them," says Ling. "This makes it easier for Malik to be able to control the movements of his family. Many of the issues addressed within the play exist only in this adaptation of the play, making it truly local in context,' he adds. With the father managing the emotional turmoil of five sons, character work lies at the heart of the production. Each son carries a distinct personality, shaped through collaborative rehearsals. 'The range of characters run the full gamut from the excluded eldest son to the fiery rebellious middle son and the manja youngest. "Character development took centre stage early on in our rehearsal process. We shared from personal experience and charted the ups and downs of the Malik household as intricately as we could,' concludes Ling. Advisory: the show features mature content and haze effects. Singer Charli XCX weds The 1975 drummer George Daniel in intimate ceremony
British pop star Charli XCX and The 1975's drummer George Daniel tied the knot in an intimate ceremony at London's Hackney Town Hall on July 19. The couple's close friends and family members were in attendance, including the British rock band's other members, except lead singer Matty Healy. Charli XCX, 32, whose real name is Charlotte Emma Aitchison, wore a white off-shoulder Vivienne Westwood gown with a corseted bodice. Daniel, a 35-year-old British record producer, was in a double-breasted suit jacket and a boutonniere which matched the bridal bouquet. According to reports, the newlyweds shared a kiss on the front steps of the town hall, before she put on her signature black sunglasses and exited the venue. The couple met in 2019 at the GQ Men of the Year Awards, and started dating in 2022. #SHOWBIZ: TV3's next big star aspires to be action hero like Iko Uwais
HIS elder half-sister may be a legend-of-sorts on big and small screens, but aspiring action hero Zairi Aziz, 23, wants to be his own man. Zairi, who hails from Hulu Langat in Selangor, is the younger brother of popular veteran actress Nasha Aziz, but he has always dreamed of becoming an action hero and looks up to Indonesian action hero Iko Uwais. Currently undergoing skills training as a stuntman from Action Floor, a local stunt development company, he has been doing stunts and acting in bit roles for two years. ACTION HERO Zairi was recently selected as one of two winners for TV3's 'Pencarian Pelakon Drama Sangat' actor and actress search, which was held at Balai Berita in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur. He said: "I learnt silat during my schooldays, and in recent years I have excelled in mixed martial arts (MMA)." Among the well-known dramas he has appeared in is 'Anak-Anak Mafia' on Tonton. "While Iko Uwais of Indonesia has always been my idol, I also look up to our own action heroes especially Datuk Rosyam Nor, Fattah Amin, and Syafiq Kyle," he said. The chosen actress of the search was Ariana Yusof, 23, of Seremban. A model, television host and actress, she is about to complete a civil engineering degree course at Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia in Batu Pahat, Johor. The second of three siblings, she admires award-winning actress Siti Saleha Baharom who excels in character-acting, and Amir Ahnaf who delves into troubled characters and shines. "I always look up to actors and actresses who play characters who are out of the ordinary, somewhat troubled and complex. "Siti Saleha and Amir are two of the promising ones, and I aim to follow in their footsteps," she said. Ariana would love to star in dramas and movies that do not require her to be "just a pretty face". "I also hope to play strong and independent women, who go through interesting character development, such as those portrayed by Siti Saleha and Erma Fatima," she said. 'Pencarian Pelakon Drama Sangat' was held in conjunction with TV3's 41st anniversary celebrations, and it was Malaysia's first private television station's initiative to find the country's next big actor and actress. This search was paired with TV3's initiative 'Pitch Story Anda Ke TV3' to find the country's next best filmmaker, be he or she a producer, director or screenwriter. AUDITIONS Widely-read literature graduate Aireen Nur Yusrina Saliman, 22, saw her original movie idea 'Takdir Tak Bernama' win 'Pitch Your Story'. Aireen said: "I have been reading novels since primary school and I excel in both Malay and English literature. "My favourite authors are Indonesian literary giant Hamka and American novelist John Green." Auditions started on May 31 and lasted a month, and the search was a "thank you" to all viewers for their strong support all these years. Only one actor and one actress were chosen for 'Drama Sangat', and they were given exclusive, three-year contracts with Altenate Records, and a chance to star in TV3's latest dramas. The judges for the actor search were popular director Erma Fatima and producer Datuk Hasniza Nordin. GRADUATES TV3 broadcast content general manager Marlia Zul Amran said that the movie and drama pitch saw mostly university graduates from around the country suggest original ideas for future dramas and movies. "Auditions took place at Universiti Malaya on June 14 and Taylor's University on June 21." She added that the winning idea received RM5,000, while the second and third-placed ideas received RM3,000 and RM1,000 respectively. Erma said that she was impressed with this year's actor and actress hopefuls, as they came for their auditions well-prepared and were "natural" on stage. "Competition has been very stiff this time, and this is a clear sign that our country has many hidden gems waiting to be discovered for the big and small screens," she said. LOCAL Marlia said that both programmes were aimed at strengthening local content and discovering individuals who could be the "bright future" of Malaysian television and film. "We received more than 300 applicants this year for both contests, and we are confident that these numbers will grow in the years to come." Marlia said that they shortlised 10 men and 10 women for the finals of the contest, and they were aged below 25. As for the movie and drama ideas pitched, five made it to the final round. "Not only must they be talented, they must also look good, communicate well, be punctual, disciplined, resilient and humble." The event was also attended by Alternate Records' senior manager Prakesh Swaminathan and drama content manager Faeza Farrah.
