Akmal Nasir, Lee Chean Chung and others to know outcome of objections to PKR poll results next week

Malay Mail25-04-2025
KUALA LUMPUR, April 25 — The status of objections involving the outcome of several Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) divisional elections will be announced next week, said Party Election Committee (JPP) chairman Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa
Dr Zaliha, who is also Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories), said the committee is currently awaiting reports before making a final decision.
'It will take time as we need to thoroughly review all objections and complaints before coming to a conclusion.
'There are several objections involving divisional results and we will announce the outcome next week,' she told reporters after the launch of the Warisan KL: Warisan Ibu Kota Malaysia MADANI project by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, here today.
Yesterday, Dr Zaliha said any objections and appeals submitted by PKR leaders over the divisional-level election results would be assessed by the Complaints Committee and the Appeals Committee before further action is taken.
She said the Complaints Committee, chaired by Datuk Ahmad Kassim, will evaluate all objections and complaints, while the Appeals Committee, chaired by Mohd Khuzzan Abu Bakar, will handle appeals.
Among those who have filed formal objections with the JPP is Deputy Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir, following his defeat in the contest for the Johor Bahru division chief post.
Other leaders who have taken similar steps include PKR communications director Lee Chean Chung (Petaling Jaya), deputy information chief Chua Wei Kiat (Selayang), and Sungai Siput MP Kesavan Subramaniam, who has lodged an official appeal with the JPP after narrowly losing in the Sungai Siput division.

Senior PKR MPs Demand Royal Commission Over Judge Appointment Allegations

Subscribe to our FREE Nine PKR parliamentarians have called for a Royal Commission of Inquiry to investigate serious allegations surrounding judicial appointments, drawing parallels to Malaysia's 2007 VK Lingam video scandal amid claims of attempted influence over court decisions and judge appointments. The demand was made during a special press conference on Monday, where the MPs outlined a comprehensive six-point action plan, including parliamentary investigations, nationwide public forums, and cross-party mobilisation, to address what they termed a crisis threatening judicial independence. Former PKR Deputy President Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli detailed four specific allegations requiring government explanation: First, nominations for new judges across all court levels submitted by the Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC) to the government have not been addressed appropriately, resulting in urgent vacancies. Second, nominations for the Chief Justice and Court of Appeal President positions had already been decided by JAC before Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat's retirement and submitted to the Prime Minister; however, appointments were not made, resulting in the current vacancies. Third, a JAC meeting was called last Friday without adhering to the required 10-day notice period to make fresh nominations for vacant positions. Most seriously, a Federal Court judge was summoned to a previous JAC meeting to explain allegations of attempting to influence case decisions and judge transfers – claims now substantiated by a police report filed by the judge. Echoes of the VK Lingam Scandal The MPs drew explicit parallels to the 2007 VK Lingam video scandal, noting that the Federal Court judge called before JAC was a former special officer to Tun Ahmad Fairuz Sheikh Abdul Halim in 2003—the same former Chief Justice implicated in the original scandal. 'The last time the judicial institution was embroiled in controversy involving allegations of influence over case decisions and judge appointments was the VK Lingam video scandal in 2007,' the MPs stated in their joint declaration. This historical connection has raised concerns among legal practitioners and civil society about potential attempts to influence judicial appointments and court decisions, mirroring the earlier scandal. Beyond demanding a Royal Commission, the MPs outlined an extensive response strategy. They will formally request that Parliament's Special Select Committee on Human Rights, Elections, and Institutional Reform investigate, including summoning the Prime Minister for testimony. A formal letter will be sent to the committee chairman, William Leong, and all members. MPs Launch Multi-Pronged Campaign Strategy The group plans to mobilise cross-party parliamentary support and launch nationwide public forums, beginning in Kuala Lumpur/Selangor on Sunday, 13 July, at 8:30 PM, before expanding to major cities nationwide. An online petition will be launched to demonstrate public support for defending judicial independence. Appointments to fill key judicial vacancies should be based on previous JAC proceedings rather than new nominations made amid the current controversy. The statement was jointly signed by nine PKR parliamentarians: Rafizi Ramli (Pandan), Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad (Setiawangsa), Wong Chen (Subang), Rodziah Ismail (Ampang), Zahir Hassan (Wangsa Maju), Datuk Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik (Balik Pulau), Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh (Ledang), S Kesavan (Sungai Siput), and Onn Abu Bakar (Batu Pahat). Timing Amid Leadership Transition The allegations emerge during a critical transition period for Malaysia's judiciary. Tengku Maimun concluded her historic tenure as the country's first female Chief Justice on Wednesday after six years of service. The Federal Court's Chief Registrar's Office announced Thursday that Chief Judge of Malaya Tan Sri Hasnah Mohammed Hashim would exercise Chief Justice powers under Article 131A of the Federal Constitution and relevant provisions of the Courts of Judicature Act 1964. The MPs urged Malaysians to pay attention to the controversy despite other competing issues, emphasising its significant future impact on the country and its citizens. We call on all Malaysians to pay attention to this issue which has major implications for the people and country in the future, even though it may seem trivial amid various other issues. The controversy represents a test of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's administration's commitment to judicial independence—a cornerstone principle of both PKR and Pakatan Harapan's political platform. Chief Judge of Malaya Tan Sri Hasnah Mohammed Hashim named as acting CJ today. I remember in 2019, when Tun Richard Malanjum retired on 12 April, Tun Tengku Maimun was appointed as CJ on 2 May, some weeks later. I cannot recall at the time whether an acting CJ was appointed. — Syahredzan Johan (@syahredzan) Constitutional Framework The appointment arrangement was made in accordance with Article 131A of the Federal Constitution, as well as provisions under Section 9(1)(b) and Section 9(3) of the Courts of Judicature Act 1964 [Act 91]. The constitutional provisions ensure continuity in judicial leadership during transition periods; however, the allegations by PKR MPs raise concerns about the broader appointment process beyond this immediate arrangement. The PKR parliamentarians' demand for a Royal Commission reflects growing calls for transparency in judicial appointments, a critical component of Malaysia's separation of powers and judicial independence. Their allegations, if substantiated, could raise questions about the government's handling of judicial nominations and adherence to established procedures in the appointment process. The phrase "Soft strength wields the strongest power" finds its living embodiment in Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat, Malaysia's first female Chief Justice, whose tenure has been marked not by flamboyance or force, but by quiet integrity, calm command, and unshakable adherence to… — Siti Kasim (@sitikasim) READ MORE : Share your thoughts with us via TRP's . PM's political secretary slams 'narrow-minded' criticism of overseas visits

Malaysia's proactive approach has yielded tangible results, with approved investments rising by 14.9 per cent to RM378 billion and trade performance increasing by 9.2 per cent to RM2.88 trillion in 2024. 07 Jul 2025 07:50pm France's President Emmanuel Macron (L) welcomes Malaysia's Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim prior to a working dinner at the Elysee Palace in Paris on July 4, 2025. (Photo by Ludovic MARIN / AFP) KUALA LUMPUR - Accusations from opposition figures labeling Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's official overseas visits as mere 'sightseeing trips' reveal a narrow-minded misunderstanding of the strategic importance behind these diplomatic missions. Political secretary to the Prime Minister, Datuk Ahmad Farhan Fauzi, said such accusations reflect a lack of comprehension of the complex geopolitical and geo-economic challenges currently impacting the world, Malaysia, and its people. Malaysia's Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (R) and Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva greet each other during the BRICS Business Forum in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on July 5, 2025. BRICS leaders meeting in Rio de Janeiro from Sunday are expected to decry Donald Trump's hardline trade policies, but are struggling to bridge divides over crises roiling the Middle East. (Photo by Daniel RAMALHO / AFP) He emphasised that each official visit by the Prime Minister carries significant national agendas, including attracting high-quality investments, strengthening strategic partnerships, opening new markets for Malaysian companies, and championing the voice of developing countries on global platforms such as BRICS. "This is not a mere leisure trip. It is proactive economic and geopolitical diplomacy guided by a forward-thinking vision. "The Prime Minister's economic diplomacy initiatives create strategic new economic opportunities, including resuming Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations with the European Union (EU) and signing FTAs with EFTA countries,' he said in a Facebook post today. Ahmad Farhan highlighted that Malaysia's proactive approach has yielded tangible results, with approved investments rising by 14.9 per cent to RM378 billion, and trade performance increasing by 9.2 per cent to RM2.88 trillion in 2024. He noted the significance of this approach for Malaysia as an open economy, where the trade-to-GDP ratio stands at 130 per cent. "In contrast, during the previous administration, the country's image was not progressive. History shows the political crises that unfolded then. "The era of weak and uninspired leadership - likened to 'seekor belalang di tepi lautan' (a frog in a well), has passed since the MADANI government took office,' he added. Under MADANI's leadership, he said, Malaysia is once again viewed internationally as a principled, stable, and promising partner. Ahmad Farhan further said that Malaysia's effective foreign policy is evident through multi-billion ringgit investments, strategic agreements, and the Prime Minister's active participation in world-class economic and diplomatic forums. "My advice to those narrow-minded opposition figures is to better understand the people. The public does not share your mindset, nor can they be deceived by distorted perceptions. "The people are discerning and know who genuinely works for the country versus those who spread slander, sow division, and engage in 'politics without wisdom,'' he added. Currently, the Prime Minister is leading a Malaysian delegation on official visits to Italy, France, and Brazil since July 1, aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and enhancing trade and economic cooperation with these countries. This includes attending the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro as a partner country and representing ASEAN 2025, advocating regional interests on issues such as global governance, artificial intelligence, climate, and health. - BERNAMA More Like This

Najib orchestrated SRC fraud for personal gain, court told

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Najib Razak was the primary beneficiary in a large-scale fraud involving SRC International Sdn Bhd, the High Court heard today. Lawyer Datuk Lim Chee Wee said SRC International, formerly a 1MDB subsidiary, was exploited by the former prime minister for personal gain, straying from its public-interest mandate. He said this in his submissions during the hearing of SRC International's suit against Najib and former chief executive Nik Faisal Ariff Kamil to recover US$1.18 billion in damages. Nik Faisal, who is wanted in connection with the RM42 million SRC probe, was last traced to Hong Kong in 2020. "Although SRC International suffered massive losses amounting to US$1.18 billion, the first defendant (Najib) received US$120 million into his account and another RM42 million, which is the subject of another separate suit. "He also acted as a shadow director of the company, controlling the board through shareholder resolutions relating to key macro decisions, which should have been made by the company's board. "Najib signed shareholder resolutions to approve and secure a RM4 billion loan from Kumpulan Wang Persaraan (Diperbadankan), or KWAP, and spent RM3.6 billion of that on unlawful purposes. "This makes Najib the main architect behind the substantial loss of US$1.18 billion," he said. A shadow director refers to an individual who, though not formally appointed as a director, exerts significant influence over the company's board and its decisions. The lawyer said Najib gave inconsistent explanations, offering five versions when questioned about the US$120 million SRC International funds credited into his personal bank account. Lim said Najib denied receiving money from the company's funds, instead claiming it was a donation and insisting the account was not managed by him personally but was for corporate social responsibility (CSR). He submitted that Najib abused his public office by, among other things, securing two loans worth RM2 billion and two government guarantees without conducting due diligence or feasibility studies for a company he himself described as "a new company with no track record". He said the loans suffered repayment defaults that Najib attempted to conceal by approving several short-term loans to SRC to avoid default, without any inquiry into repayment capability. On May 7, 2021, SRC International filed a civil suit against Najib and Nik Faisal seeking US$1.18 billion in damages. In the suit, former SRC director Datuk Suboh Md Yassin was named as a third-party respondent along with other former directors, including Tan Sri Ismee Ismail, Datuk Mohamed Azhar Osman Khairuddin, Datuk Shahrol Azral Ibrahim Halmi and Datuk Che Abdullah @ Rashidi Che Omar. The company alleges both defendants conspired and committed breaches of trust, and that Najib abused his powers and gained personal rewards from its funds, in addition to misappropriating them. The company is seeking a declaration that all defendants are liable to pay for the investment fund's losses arising from the use of the loans, as well as general, exemplary and aggravated damages, interest, costs, and any other relief the court deems fit. The hearing before judge Datuk Ahmad Fairuz Zainol Abidin continues tomorrow.
