Hate speech case: HC to hear Abbas Ansari's revision plea on July 30
Abbas, son of late gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari, was MLA from Mau Assembly constituency from Suheldev Bhartiya Samaj Party (SBSP).
Justice Sameer Jain deferred the hearing after additional advocate general MC Chaturvedi, appearing for the state, sought additional time to prepare the case.
The courts in its one-page order observed: "At the very outset, the additional advocate general (AAG) submitted that for proper assistance, some time may be given to him to prepare the case properly."
Abbas was convicted by the MP-MLA court of Mau on May 31 under sections 153-A (promoting enmity between groups) and 189 (threatening a public servant) of the Indian Penal Code.
The conviction pertains to a controversial speech delivered during the 2022 assembly election campaign in Mau when Abbas targeted a govt officer and his speech video went viral on social media, leading to the lodging of the case.
He was sentenced to two years' imprisonment and fined Rs 2,000. His election agent, Mansoor Ansari, who was present on the stage during the rally, was also convicted and sentenced to six months in jail.
Subsequently after conviction, he was disqualified as a member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly. The seat has now been declared vacant.

Addicted to rummy, vice-principal steals Rs 8 lakh from college safe in Ahmedabad
Ahmedabad: The vice-principal of a nursing college in Meghaninagar has been arrested for stealing Rs 8 lakh from the institution's office safe, after police identified her through a small but telling detail in CCTV footage: a birthmark near her right eye. The 42-year-old woman, a resident of Shahibaug, confessed to committing the theft, citing a severe addiction to online rummy that had plunged her into debt. The theft, which had initially puzzled investigators, came to light when CCTV footage revealed a burqa-clad woman discreetly unlocking the office safe and walking away with a bundle of Rs 500 notes totalling Rs 8 lakh. On close examination of the footage, sub-inspector R M Chavda of Meghaninagar police said, "Scouring through the tapes through the night, we noticed a distinct birthmark near the right eye of the burqa-clad woman — a facial feature that matched the vice-principal, whom we had questioned on the day of the theft. " He further added that the accused, confronted with the videographic evidence the next morning, confessed to committing the theft, after which she was arrested. The vice-principal, a resident of Shahibaug, told police she had fallen into heavy debt due to online rummy addiction, and stole the money in a desperate attempt to recover her losses and keep playing. She used a key, kept carelessly in a drawer in the same room as the safe, to gain access to the student fee pool around 6am on July 22. The gathering included the accused, who by that time had safely squirrelled the money back home to come back to the scene of the crime. The Meghaninangar police has booked the accused under Section 305 (theft) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and are in the process of adding charges under Section 306 for theft by a clerk or servant. The Meghaninagar police recovered Rs 2.36 lakh in cash from her Shahibaug residence and from her person. The remaining Rs 5.64 lakh, police said, had been transferred overnight to her online gaming wallet, which has been frozen pending formal seizure proceedings.

16 arrested as police bust cyber gang minting Rs 1cr per month
1 2 Lucknow: What looked like an ordinary flat on Kursi Road turned out to be the hub of a hi-tech cyber syndicate duping unsuspecting people through illegal online betting games, minting over Rs 1 crore in just 30 days. The gang, involving people primarily from Chhattisgarh and Gujarat, was busted by the eastern zone crime team and Gudamba police with the arrest of 16 people, on Wednesday. Police received a tip-off about suspicious activities by young men with multiple mobile devices and laptops. A crack team swooped in and nabbed 16 members of the gang. The team seized Rs 1.07 crore cash stacked in bundles, along with 79 ATM cards, 22 passbooks, 13 cheque books, 54 mobile phones, three laptops, and two note-counting machines. The accused were identified as Pramod Sahu (25), Sajid Ansari (24), Khemendra Sahu (23), Sohail Ashraf Khan (28), Tikesh Kumar Yadav (23), Sachin Kumar Gupta (24), Abhay Mishra (22), Ansh Sharma (21), Shankar Bag (22), Vinayak Chauhan (24), Mohan Singh (29), and Vijay Sahni (23), all from Chhattisgarh, and Rakesh Kumar (50), Rakesh Prahlad Patel (50), Govindbhai Mangaldas Prajapati (50), and Govindbhai (31) from Gujarat. "Their network is spread across India, and their turnover in a single month crossed Rs 1 crore," a senior police officer said. DCP, east zone, Shashank Singh, said that the gang operated under the guise of online betting platforms, offering flashy games promising quick money. "Unsuspecting players deposited money, believing they could win big, but the funds were diverted to fake, rented bank accounts created using forged documents," said Singh. "To evade detection, the gang withdrew cash almost immediately via ATMs, converting digital traces into hard currency. The money was then funnelled to kingpins running illegal betting platforms, with every member of the gang pocketing a cut," the DCP said, adding that the masterminds could be operating from Dubai. Police said specific roles were assigned to members for account creation, fund transfers, cash withdrawal, and coordination with betting app operators. "The mobile numbers recovered from the flat indicate that the arrested men were part of a larger network. The CID Cyber Cell and IT experts have been roped in to trace the servers and digital footprints," an officer said.

12 trapped in Dhanbad mine after cave-in, say locals, MP
Incident site in Dhanbad DHANBAD/RANCHI: At least 12 miners are feared trapped in a caved-in illegal coal mine in Jamunia, around 40 km from Dhanbad district headquarters, with some feared dead, villagers and politicians said Wednesday. Police, administration and Bharat Coking Coal Ltd, however, said that so far they had not found any sign of mine collapse. The alleged incident snowballed into political brick-batting as both the governing and opposition parties attacked each other over the illegal mining menace in the coal belt, and in the state at large. "Twelve labourers are trapped while some others who managed to escape are undergoing treatment in private hospitals. Families of the trapped workers are being offered Rs 10 lakh as compensation. This is a racket where labourers are brought from other districts and used for illegal mining. After the mishap, the entry point was filled with mud to conceal the incident," Giridih MP Chandra Prakash Chaudhary claimed. On the other hand, Jamshedpur West MLA Saryu Roy on Tuesday wrote on X, "At a place called Jamunia in Baghmara, Dhanbad, a tunnel used for illegal mining collapsed, resulting in the death of nine workers. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Cat Keeps Hugging Friend Before Going To The Vet – The Vet Paled When He Saw Them Tips and Tricks Undo The illegal mining mafia is engaged in disposing of the bodies of the deceased. I have informed #SSP#Dhanbad about this." Talking to media, he held the local administration accountable. Dhanbad deputy commissioner Aditya Ranjan told PTI, "We have rushed an NDRF team to the spot suggested but so far no sign of any such incident has been found." Dhanbad SSP Prabhat Kumar said that he had directed SDPO Baghmara to conduct a probe. Kumar, too, told PTI that "no trace of any such incident was found". He added: "Additionally, no one from any side, including family members, turned up. So far, no formal complaint has been lodged from any side." Regional nodal security officer of Bharat Coking's block-2 project, Rajiv Ranjan, also said there was no information of any such incident in the block-2 project's closed underground mine. Health, food & civil supplies and disaster management minister and Congress MLA Irfan Ansari, meanwhile, accused Bharat Coking of patronising illegal mining and demanded appropriate compensation. The state Congress attacked the Centre. "Security of mines is entirely managed by institutions like CCL and BCCL through CISF, which is directly under the Centre," said spokesperson Sonal Shanti. BJP hit back demanding a CBI probe. "It's state-sponsored deaths. The state govt and local administration are aware of illegal mining but choose to remain mum," said spokesperson Pratul Shahdeo.
