Kirby Smart's simple explanation on why Florida-Georgia rivalry isn't coming to Athens

Yahoo07-06-2025
The Georgia Bulldogs and Florida Gators will play each other at EverBank Stadium in Jacksonville, Florida, in 2025 as usual. The SEC recently announced, along with several other games of Georgia's schedule that the Georgia-Florida game will be played on Saturday, Nov. 1 at 3:30 p.m. ET and will televised on ABC.
However, after the 2025 season, Georgia and Florida will play each other at neutral sites in 2026 (Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia) and 2027 (Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida) while EverBank Stadium undergoes some renovations. The rivalry will return to EverBank Stadium in 2028.

Georgia coach Kirby Smart explained why the Georgia-Florida series is playing at neutral sites in 2026 and 2027 instead of doing a home-and-home series for two years. Based on a recent interview, Smart clearly would have preferred to play a home-and-home series.
Head coach Kirby Smart of the Georgia Bulldogs and head coach Billy Napier of the Florida Gators
"Why can't we play that Florida-Georgia game..." Smart said as he shook his head. "Didn't get it (a home-and-home series)."
"That was an AD decision," added Smart. "It ultimately came based on money. And, you know, the Mercedes and Tampa both ponied up and made really good financial offers."
Smart also reminisced on his playing career when he played at home (1995) and away (1994) against Florida. Georgia suffered embarrassing blowouts in both 1994 and 1995, but it would've been really fun to see the games return to Athens and Gainesville in 2026 and 2027.

How much money will Georgia and Florida make?
Both Georgia and Florida are set to make $7.5 million for playing the 2026 game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia. Money is king in this era of college football. Traditions and what is best for fans and players are often getting tossed to the side.

MLS Suspends Lionel Messi One Match For Skipping 2025 All-Star Game

FORT LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA - OCTOBER 19: Lionel Messi #10 of Inter Miami celebrates scoring his third ... More goal during the second half against the New England Revolution at Chase Stadium on October 19, 2024 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. (Photo by) Lionel Messi isn't above MLS policy. That's the message MLS Commissioner Don Garber sent earlier today after the longtime soccer executive suspended the Inter Miami CF star one match for skipping the MLS All-Star Game on Wednesday evening. Messi, who didn't have a reported injury, opted not to participate in the match along with fellow teammate and All-Star selection Jordi Alba. League rules require All-Star Game selections to participate in the match. Even with their absence, MLS All-Stars beat the best of Liga MX 3-1 at Austin FC's Q2 Stadium. The 38-year-old Messi, who joined MLS in mid-2023, and Alba will now miss the team's regular season home match against FC Cincinnati on Saturday night at Chase Stadium. Currently, Inter Miami sits in fifth place in the Eastern Conference with 41 points, seven points behind first-place Cincinnati. At press time, the cheapest ticket on the secondary ticketing marketplace TickPick was $50. Meanwhile, on Friday afternoon, Inter Miami co-owner Jorge Mas criticized the league's decision to suspend Messi, telling members of the media that 'the punishment for the rule is, frankly, draconian.' 'The ones that get penalized [by the suspensions] are the club, the fans, sponsors, TV, Apple, etc.,' he said. Mas added of Messi: 'He's very upset, extremely upset today, as expected. … Will it have an impact initially on the players' perception of how the league rules work, etc.? Absolutely, no doubt.' In his remarks, Mas also commented that he hoped the league's decision won't have any long-term ramifications, which could include Messi — who has contributed to the rising valuation of Inter Miami — departing MLS at the end of the 2025 season when his current contract with Inter Miami expires. 'The All-Star Game should thrive irrespective of the individual players, be it one, two, three, four or five players,' Mas said. 'Obviously, Lionel Messi is Lionel Messi. He is different. He has completely changed the economics of this league, for every single club, every team, every sponsor, the league, media, etc. He's important. But at the end of the day, Lionel Messi wants to play competitive matches.'

Former Georgia QB Carson Beck tells legendary SEC championship story

Former Georgia Bulldogs quarterback Carson Beck had a memorable time at ACC media days. Addressing the media for the first time since his decision to sign with Miami, he earned a ton of time in the spotlight. Beck used a lot of that time to discuss his favorite memories with Georgia last year. One of them was the time he came back in the 2024 SEC championship against Texas. He suffered a UCL injury while trying to throw a Hail Mary on the last play of the first half, but he miraculously came back to hand the ball off to Trevor Etienne for the game-winning touchdown in overtime. 'People are like, jumping on me and stuff,' Beck said. 'Yo, chill. I'm injured. That was a cool moment, I think, to be my last play for Georgia and not (have) the injury be my last play.' He told this story on ACC. A little earlier in the interview, former Georgia coach Mark Richt joked around with Beck about his NIL money. ""You were at Georgia, went to Miami," said Richt. "I was at Georgia, went to Miami. The only difference is you got paid more than I did." Richt's salary with the Hurricanes, where he finished his College Football Hall of Fame career from 2016-18 after leading UGA for 15 years, was reportedly $4 million a year. Beck is making over $4 million with his new NIL deal with the Miami Hurricanes. Carson Beck talked about his decision to leave for Miami in the Hurricanes' press conference. He believed it was a hard decision for him, but the right decision to make. He discussed his favorite moment with the Georgia Bulldogs as well, and overall, he looked back on his time at Georgia very positively.

Falcons agree to terms with WR DJ Chark

The Falcons are signing veteran wide receiver DJ Chark, NFL Media reports. Chark visited Atlanta on Friday. He visited with the Bears last month but Chicago did not sign Chark to a deal. Chark, 28, spent last season with the Chargers but appeared in only seven games because of a hip injury. He finished the season with four catches for 31 yards and a touchdown, playing a total of 105 offensive snaps. In 2023, Chark caught 35 passes for 525 yards with five touchdowns for the Panthers. The Jaguars made Chark a second-round pick in 2018, and he eclipsed 1,000 yards in 2019 for them to earn Pro Bowl honors. In 76 games, with 51 starts, Chark has 216 career receptions for 3,100 yards with 24 touchdowns.
