Ange Postecoglou fires Rangers warning to Panathinaikos
And they have found an unlikely ally in former Hoops boss Postecoglou, who was back in his original Greek homeland to promote the country's Super League.
Postecoglou was sacked by Spurs despite leading them to a historic Europa League trophy success against Manchester United.
And he was quizzed about whether Panathinaikos would get through in the Champions League when they face Postecoglou's former Old Firm foes Rangers.
He said: "I would say that Rangers are always strong in European competition.
"But Greek teams have been doing well too for the past couple of years.
"Rangers are behind Celtic in Scotland, but they always impress in European football.
"But of course I hope that Panathinaikos and AEK Athens both do well in the qualifying rounds in their competitions and go as far as they can."

Meanwhile, Panathinaikos have rejected an £8.5 million bid from Sporting Lisbon for full back Giorgos Vayannidis because they won't sell anyone until after their tie with Rangers.
The Portuguese giants are desperate to land the 24-year-old, ahead of Everton and Wolves who have both been linked too.
But they have told all interested parties they have no intention of selling any player until their clash with Rangers is decided.

Astros walk-off Rangers in 11th to halt 4-game skid
July 13 - Zack Short hit an opposite-field, walk-off single in the 11th inning, and the Houston Astros snapped a four-game skid with a 5-4 victory over the Texas Rangers on Saturday. Short plated Cam Smith from second base with his single to right field off Rangers reliever Hoby Milner. Smith walked against Robert Garcia (1-5), who also walked Kenedy Corona to load the bases for Christian Walker, whose sacrifice fly to center scored Isaac Paredes with the tying run. Texas pulled ahead 4-3 when Adolis Garcia ripped a single to left in the top of the 11th that scored Marcus Semien. Bennett Sousa (3-0) allowed the Adolis Garcia single but held the line there. Texas mounted a stunning rally against the Astros' bullpen, slicing a two-run deficit to 3-2 when Semien clubbed a two-out homer off Houston reliever Bryan Abreu in the eighth. With two outs in the ninth, Kyle Higashioka bashed a 3-1 sinker from Astros closer Josh Hader, his fourth homer knotting the score and saddling Hader with his first blown save in 26 opportunities. The Astros rode three solo home runs, all with two outs, to that 3-1 advantage. Jose Altuve and Yainer Diaz drilled homers off Texas All-Star right-hander Jacob deGrom in the first and fourth innings, respectively. Altuve pulled the Astros even at 1-1 with his 17th homer. Diaz produced a 2-1 lead with his 13th. That run support appeared sufficient for Astros ace Framber Valdez. Valdez labored through a 21-pitch top of the first before finding his groove. Sam Haggerty reached on a throwing error by shortstop Mauricio Dubon to open the game, took third base on a Semien single, and scored when Valdez uncorked a wild pitch to Wyatt Langford. Valdez followed with strikeouts of Langford and Jonah Heim to get himself on track. Haggerty doubled leading off the third inning, the lone batter to reach against Valdez between the second and fifth. After stranding Haggerty with three consecutive groundball outs in the third, Valdez struck out five straight batters before Haggerty grounded out to cap the fifth. Corey Seager hit a sharp grounder that ricocheted off Valdez and rolled to the visiting dugout for a leadoff double in the sixth. Valdez responded with strikeouts of Semien and Adolis Garcia before Langford singled and stole second base. Valdez induced Heim to ground out to Dubon. Valdez allowed one unearned run on four hits and recorded 10 strikeouts. It marked the third time in his career that he notched double-digit strikeouts without issuing a walk. deGrom allowed two runs, four hits and one walk with eight strikeouts over six strong innings. Dubon belted his sixth home run with two outs in the seventh off Texas reliever Jacob Webb. --Field Level Media

Can Rangers' star rise again with no stellar signings at Ibrox?
B etween Tutbury and Barton-under-Needwood, between Burton-upon-Trent and Draycott in the Clay, football players from Glasgow are sweating it out on a pitch so hot it is being hosed with water regularly. Pitch number four at St George's Park, English football's training HQ, to be specific. 'Good luck Lionesses' says the giant message displayed behind the complex's reception desk about the women's team at Euro 2025. Rangers are in Staffordshire. If they are to come together and achieve anything in Scotland this season it will be a feat with its genesis here in the very heart of England. Russell Martin is out beasting his players on that training pitch. They have already had to do extra running in the week as 'punishment' for disappointing him in some minor way (he laughs off an attempt to find out how they had fallen below the necessary levels). Now in an open training session there is a warm-up then an adapted, high-intensity seven-a-side game with separate teams in yellow, blue or red bibs, including Martin himself playing at the back for the yellows. Then set-piece practice, defending and attacking free kicks, and then the same with crosses. An 11-v-11 game to finish. One of those sides builds out from the back and neatly goes all the way to score at the other end. 'You look like a team,' Martin shouts at them, clearly pleased. 'When you move like that you look like a team.' He talks to them all a lot. Swears a lot too. Those who have been around the club for a while say he is more vocal during training than recent predecessors. These are players and a management team still sussing each other out. He tells them the sort of possession he wants from his defenders at the back: 'Not side to side, f***ing passive.'

Sporting Lisbon's Viktor Gyokeres faces disciplinary action for training no-show
The Portuguese club warned Gyokeres' no-show will make the striker's possible departure to Arsenal 'more complicated'. Gyokeres, who scored 39 league goals to fire Sporting to the Portuguese title last season, is understood to be at the top of Arsenal's wishlist. Viktor Gyokeres scored a hat-trick against Manchester City in the Champions League last season (Zed Jameson/PA) However, the two clubs are yet to agree a transfer fee and the 27-year-old has appeared to play his hand by refusing to return for pre-season training. However, Sporting president Frederico Varandas told Portuguese news agency LUSA, 'We're calm. Everything can be solved with the closure of the market, a hefty fine and an apology to the group. 'If they don't want to pay Viktor's fair market value, we'll be very comfortable with that for the next three years. 'If the geniuses who are devising this strategy think that this puts pressure on me to make it easier for him to leave, not only are they completely wrong, but they are also making it more complicated for the player to leave. 'No one is above the interests of the club. Whoever they are.' Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is keen to bring in a new striker before the club's pre-season tour of Singapore and Hong Kong, with Arsenal due to play their first match, against AC Milan, on July 23. Denmark midfielder Christian Norgaard has been brought in from Brentford, along with Spain international Martin Zubimendi and goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, who joined from Chelsea. Arsenal are also closing in on a £52million deal for Chelsea's England forward Noni Madueke.
