Ange Postecoglou fires Rangers warning to Panathinaikos
And they have found an unlikely ally in former Hoops boss Postecoglou, who was back in his original Greek homeland to promote the country's Super League. Postecoglou was sacked by Spurs despite leading them to a historic Europa League trophy success against Manchester United. And he was quizzed about whether Panathinaikos would get through in the Champions League when they face Postecoglou's former Old Firm foes Rangers. He said: "I would say that Rangers are always strong in European competition. "But Greek teams have been doing well too for the past couple of years. "Rangers are behind Celtic in Scotland, but they always impress in European football. "But of course I hope that Panathinaikos and AEK Athens both do well in the qualifying rounds in their competitions and go as far as they can." Read more: Meanwhile, Panathinaikos have rejected an £8.5 million bid from Sporting Lisbon for full back Giorgos Vayannidis because they won't sell anyone until after their tie with Rangers. The Portuguese giants are desperate to land the 24-year-old, ahead of Everton and Wolves who have both been linked too. But they have told all interested parties they have no intention of selling any player until their clash with Rangers is decided.

Ex-Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou wins special Greek award
Postecoglou was recognised for his Europa League success with Tottenham Hotspur. The 59-year-old guided the North London club to their first major honour in 17 years, although he was relieved of his duties less than a fortnight later and now finds himself without work. Postecoglou was recently invited to the draw for the 2025/26 Greek Super League, at which he was presented with an award of special recognition by president and Nottingham Forest owner, Evangelos Marinakis. "Thank you very much, it is an honour to be here today," said Postecoglou [neoskosmos]. "I left Greece when I was five years old, but when we left, my parents, my father, passed on the love he had for football to me. Read more: "I grew up with the names Mavros, Papaioannou, Delikaris. I had not seen them, but I knew them as if I had seen them, because my father spoke to me. "I had this dream since I was little, as a player I did not succeed, but as a coach I tried to make my father proud for the sacrifices he made for me and my sister and every day I think about the sacrifices he made. "My father is not with me today, but he sees me and is proud of what I have built, I have my wife by my side, and we continue. I want to make you proud, Greece and Australia. It is a great honour to be here." Marinakis added: "What I want to say about Ange is that he has spoken about Greece many times, he is proud to be Greek, and in the great success he had with Tottenham by winning the Europa League, he spoke about Greece. "[He is] a man who not only does not hide his origin but is also proud of it. "What he achieved, he did with a team that has not won any titles, it has had a very difficult time in recent years. In this huge success that the whole world saw, he promoted Greece. "We must thank him especially for this, and we wish him well, although we are sure that he will do well as he has the ability. Wherever he goes, the successes will come."

Latest FIFA ranking of India - Blue Tigers drop six spots after loss to Hong Kong
The men's Indian football team fell six spots to 133rd in the latest FIFA rankings announced on Thursday. It is India's lowest ranking in nearly a decade. The last time it was ranked lower than this was in December 2016, at 135. The Blue Tigers have gone on a downward spiral since the end of 2023, when it won three trophies and had broken into the top 100. However, it made a group stage exit from the 2023 AFC Asian Cup, and an elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers followed. ALSO READ: Malaysia rises to highest FIFA rankings in 19 years under former right-hand man of Postecoglou A change of head coach, from Igor Stimac to Manolo Marquez, did not help as India failed to win a competitive match in over 16 months. Earlier this month, Marquez also parted ways with the team, with his last match in charge being a 0-1 loss to Hong Kong in the 2027 AFC Asian Cup third round qualifiers. The six-spot drop was the second-steepest fall for any team around the world in the current rankings, joint with Chinese Taipei, Cayman Islands, St Kitts and Nevis, El Salvador and Slovakia. Only Congo, the Maldives, Haiti and Jamaica are the countries with a steeper fall of seven positions.

Ange warns detractors 'we're not done yet' as Celtic hero speaks publicly for first time since Tottenham heartbreak
Postecoglou lost his job at Spurs despite delivering their first European trophy since 1984 Ange Postecoglou insists he is far from done with management after the Celtic hero was presented with a special award in his homeland of Greece. Despite leading Tottenham to their first major trophy in 17 years with a Europa League triumph against Manchester United last season, the 59-year-old was given the sack by Daniel Levy due to their worrying Premier League performance, with Spurs finishing just one place above the relegation places. Postecoglou has since been replaced at the Tottenham Stadium by Brenford boss Thomas Frank and in turn was approached about potentially taking over from the Dane in West London in what would have been a bizarre managerial swap. Postecoglou was born in Nea Filadelfeia just outside the Greek capital of Athens but emigrated to Melbourne in Australia at the age of five in 1970, where he launched his career in football as a player and then more successfully as a manager. The well-travelled Parkhead favourite was presented with a unique award after becoming the Greek to lift a European title and took the opportunity to pay an emotional tribute to his late father. Speaking in his native tongue at an event to announce the fixtures for the new Super League season, the Greek-Aussie said: "When I left Greece, my father and my mother, mostly my father, passed on the love they had for football to me. "I grew up with the names. He supported AEK, Mimi Papaeoannou, Thomas Mavro and (Georgios) Delikaris. "I hadn't seen all these players but I knew all these names as if I had seen them, because my father always told me about these stories. "Since I was little, I had the dream of one day reaching this level. Unfortunately as a player, this wasn't possible, I realised that early on. "But as a coach, I tried with all the passion I had for football to make, especially my father, and my mother proud of the sacrifices they made which made them leave their own country, their family, for me and my sister to give us the opportunity to live our dreams. "And every day I think about that, the sacrifices he made. "My father is not with me now but I know he sees me and is proud of what I have achieved so far. I always have my wife ad my children by my side. "The goal is to continue, we're not done yet. I want to do all of Greece and Australia where I grew up, but especially Greece because I was born here, proud with all the things I hope will happen in the future. "But it's a great honour to be here. I am low profile and don't talk too much but know that in my heart these moments remain very close to me. Thank you very much."
