Heat selects Jakučionis in the 2025 NBA Draft as fans put Durant, Butler drama in the past

Miami Herald26-06-2025
Wednesday night at the Kaseya Center, Miami Heat fans spilled into the arena for the team's draft party. Amid pop-a-shot games and meet and greets, they were eager to see what magic the Miami front room would conjure after last season's lackluster performance, culminating in their 4-0 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers in the first round of the Eastern Conference Finals.
And that magic came when the Miami Heat selected Kasparas Jakučionis. Now, fans are revved up and ready to go.
Jakučionis — the freshman guard from the University of Illinois — was originally projected as a lottery pick, but fell to 20th on draft night when the Heat snagged him in its first-round selection.
'I'm feeling ecstatic because I didn't think Kasparas Jakučionis would be here,' said lifelong fan Kevin Cancelo. 'I think he could be a real difference-maker for the Heat. The playmaking ability that we don't have right now, I mean he's going to have an instant impact.'
The Heat's 2024-25 season, and now offseason, has been anything but uneventful. First, there was the Jimmy Butler saga, which culminated in his early February trade to the Golden State Warriors after months of back-and-forth drama — and a very public breakup — between the six-time NBA All-Star and the Heat.
'The Jimmy Butler situation, to me, was handled the best way it could be handled, especially with a player of that caliber,' longtime fan Jonathan Montoya said. 'Everybody knows his attitude. We got what was good enough for us during that time.' Montoya said he has been a fan of the Heat since 2003, and he's hoping to see 'an upgrade' from the team this upcoming season.
That upgrade could have come from the Heat's potential trade and acquisition of the 15-time NBA All-Star Kevin Durant, which Montoya said he thought would elevate the team and provide support to Heat leaders Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro. The offer reportedly included Andrew Wiggins, Terry Rozier, Haywood Highsmith and Jaime Jaquez Jr., plus the 20th pick in Wednesday's NBA Draft.
In the end, it wasn't convincing enough for the Phoenix Suns, who ended up trading Durant to the Houston Rockets.
'With Kevin Durant, I thought the front office could have pushed a little bit harder to get him, but you know, I'm happy we got to keep all the young assets and be able to keep the draft picks,' 14-year-old from Fort Lauderdale Brad Hochberg told the Miami Herald. Hochberg and his family have been season ticket holders since he was three years old.
Now, things could be looking up for the Heat with their selection of Jakučionis. According to Jakučionis, who spoke to Miami media after his selection Wednesday night, he knows 'development is huge there [Miami], and I think I can pull a lot. Just help to make the team better, win as much as we can, and I'm ready to work.'

"Thought I Was Going To Finish My Career With Luka": Dorian Finney-Smith Opens Up On His Bond With Luka Doncic

"Thought I Was Going To Finish My Career With Luka": Dorian Finney-Smith Opens Up On His Bond With Luka Doncic originally appeared on Fadeaway World. When Luka Doncic was traded to the Lakers, it became increasingly evident to the world that the Lakers are planning to make him the face of their franchise for the coming decade. One of the key players on the Lakers who was delighted to hear this news was Doncic's former teammate Dorian Finney-Smith. He almost couldn't believe that Doncic was headed to the Lakers. In a recent interview with Wavy TV 10, Finney-Smith spoke about how he felt when he reunited with Luka Doncic in the Lakers and how Doncic reacted to his move to the Rockets. 'Oh, man. I was so happy, man. To be honest, I thought I was going to finish my career with Luka in LA, but like I said, things happened. We were excited, you know, happy to get him back. Also sad that everything that happened, you know, with the trade, you know, him being, you know, just the whole emotional thing, the bad talk about his weight, and just all that, cause I knew who he is as a person." "He, you know, he won't talk badly about anybody, and you know, he cares. Just like when I went to the Rockets, he shot me a text, 'I'm happy for you. I'm proud of you. I know you're excited to be back with your kids and family.' Things like that show me that he cared.' Doncic and Finney-Smith had been teammates ever since Doncic was drafted to the NBA in 2018. They both played on the Mavericks till 2023 before Finney-Smith was traded to the Nets for Kyrie Irving. They then reunited in LA while playing for the Lakers last season, and now have been separated again due to Finney-Smith's move to the Rockets. Experts were shocked to see the Lakers let Dorian Finney-Smith walk away as a free agent this summer, considering his fit on the roster with Luka Doncic. The Lakers indicated that they plan to rebuild around Doncic this summer, but they let go of a key asset who could've been crucial for the Lakers in the coming seasons. As a sharpshooting wing who is defensively skilled, Finney Smith perfectly fits the profile of the type of player the Lakers need at the moment to play alongside Luka. A career 36.2% shooter from beyond the arc, Finney-Smith makes 38.1% of his corner threes on average, which became a key asset for the Mavericks in the time this duo played together there. Doncic's ability to drive in and collapse the defense so he can kick out the ball to the corner for an open shot became the bread and butter of their offensive strategy. The Lakers have now replaced Dorian Finney-Smith with Jake LaRavia, who last played for the Sacramento Kings and Memphis Grizzlies. Do you think the Lakers will be able to replicate the chemistry between Finney-Smith and Doncic with LaRavia? I highly doubt it. Luka Doncic Helped Lakers Land Deandre Ayton And Marcus Smart While Getting Into Best Shape Of His Career

Luka Doncic Helped Lakers Land Deandre Ayton And Marcus Smart While Getting Into Best Shape Of His Career originally appeared on Fadeaway World. Luka Doncic may not have publicly addressed his future with the Los Angeles Lakers yet, but his actions behind the scenes this summer speak louder than any statement. With an extension decision looming on August 2, the 26-year-old superstar has already acted like the franchise cornerstone, recruiting key free agents, reshaping the roster to fit his vision, and undergoing a dramatic physical transformation that has teammates and rivals alike buzzing. Doncic reportedly played a central role in helping the Lakers land both Deandre Ayton and Marcus Smart. After both players unexpectedly became available via contract buyouts, league sources confirmed that Luka personally reached out, pitched the Lakers' vision, and helped close the deals. These weren't just random additions, they were exactly the kind of players Doncic requested. He had communicated to the front office his desire for a rim-running big, perimeter defense, and shooting depth. In response, the Lakers brought in Ayton, Smart, and sharpshooter Jake LaRavia, effectively checking every box. This proactive approach is a far cry from the uncertainty many expected after the stunning midseason trade that brought Doncic to Los Angeles. That deal one of the most seismic moves in recent NBA history, blindsiding Luka, who never imagined being dealt by Dallas. Yet rather than sulking or demanding immediate changes, Doncic has leaned in, committed to building something sustainable in Los Angeles. That commitment, insiders say, is one of the main reasons the Lakers remain optimistic about locking him into a long-term deal next month. And it's not just front-office collaboration that has people talking. Doncic has spent the offseason in Europe, but not for vacation. Instead, he's been focused on what many are calling a 'revenge glow-up,' getting into the best shape of his life ahead of EuroBasket. Gone is the lingering fatigue or soft conditioning critics used to target. In its place is a leaner, faster, and more explosive Luka, determined to silence doubters and dominate in his new purple-and-gold threads. Behind closed doors, the Lakers are thrilled. Head coach JJ Redick and GM Rob Pelinka reportedly believe this version of Luka Doncic is fitter, sharper, and more engaged, which could lead the team deeper than most expect. That optimism is only magnified by the supporting cast. Rui Hachimura is coming off his best season and shooting above 40 percent from deep. Austin Reaves and LeBron James will have a full training camp to build chemistry with Luka. And Ayton, in a contract year, has every reason to be the best version of himself alongside an elite pick-and-roll partner. Meanwhile, LaRavia will finally get steady minutes, and Smart, if healthy, brings Defensive Player of the Year pedigree to the backcourt. The Lakers have pulled this off while retaining their 2031 first-round pick and keeping young assets like Dalton Knecht. In a summer filled with chaos, the Lakers have quietly moved with clarity, and Doncic has been at the heart of it all. Now, all eyes are on August 2. Because if this is the version of Luka the Lakers get moving forward, the extension won't just be a formality, it'll be the start of something story was originally reported by Fadeaway World on Jul 20, 2025, where it first appeared.
