India Today17-07-2025
A woman lost her life while five other Amarnath Yatra pilgrims sustained injuries after incessant rainfall triggered rockslides and mudslides late Wednesday evening. The Yatra has been suspended for the day due to extreme weather conditions. Total eight pilgrims have sustained injuries so far.The injured were rushed to the Baltal base camp hospital where one woman pilgrim was declared dead on arrival, officials said, adding the deceased was identified as Sona Bai (55), a resident of Rajasthan. The death toll in this year's Yatra has reached 15.advertisementThe incident took place near Railpathri along the Amarnath Yatra route after the track was severely damaged, leaving hundreds of pilgrims stranded in treacherous conditions.
Videos from the incident site, captured by the pilgrims, show the dramatic scenes of a muddy torrent sweeping away two pilgrims. People were seen holding onto the railings installed on the pathways, trying to save themselves. Jammu and Kashmir Police, paramilitary forces, and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) swiftly launched a large-scale rescue operation to evacuate pilgrims trapped between affected stretches. The Indian Army, already stationed at strategic points along the route, played a pivotal role in the rescue efforts, particularly in the northern sector between Brarimarg and Railpathri. To assist pilgrims descending via Domail, two ambulances staffed with doctors, pharmacists, nursing assistants, and first-aiders from the CRPF have been stationed along with a 'May I Help You' desk to provide immediate medical care and assistance.Despite a prior weather advisory predicting intense rainfall, the pilgrimage continued on Wednesday from both the Pahalgam and Baltal routes. However, in light of the worsening weather and the need for immediate restoration work on damaged tracks, the yatra has been suspended for the day from both Chandanwari and Baltal base camps. No down convoy to Kashmir was permitted from Jammu today, marking the first suspension from the Jammu side this year.YATRA SUSPENDED"Shri Amarnathji Yatra has been suspended for July 17 from both Pahalgam and Baltal base camps. Continuous heavy rains over the last two days have necessitated restoration work to be carried out on tracks along both routes. However, yatris who stayed at Panjtami camp last night are being allowed to proceed down to Baltal with adequate deployment of BRO and Mountain Rescue Teams," Kashmir Divisional Commissioner Vijay Kumar Bhiduri said. The Indian Army provided critical support to stranded pilgrims, sheltering around 500 yatris at Brarimarg and facilitating the accommodation of an additional 3,000 pilgrims in nearby langars. Basic supplies including tea and drinking water were distributed. Notably, Army Quick Reaction Teams (QRTs) manually evacuated several critically ill yatris from slide-prone areas, transporting them safely to Rayalpathri for further medical attention.advertisement"The situation is currently stable and under control," said the Camp Director at Brarimarg. Army units remain on high alert with light rain continuing across the affected region.Meanwhile, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has deployed personnel and machinery to repair and restore the disrupted yatra track. According to Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Vijay Kumar Bhiduri, yatris who stayed at the Panjtarni camp overnight are being escorted downhill to Baltal with support from BRO and Mountain Rescue Teams.'Subject to weather conditions, the yatra may resume tomorrow,' Bhiduri added. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast periods of heavy rainfall until July 23, warning of possible flash flooding and landslides at multiple locations along the pilgrimage route. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely.Since its commencement on July 3, over 2.47 lakh pilgrims have visited the 3,880-metre-high Amarnath cave shrine. This year's 38-day pilgrimage is scheduled to conclude on August 9.- EndsInputs from Ashraf Wani, Sunil Bhatt and Jitendra SinghMust Watch

The Amarnath Yatra is one of the most important pilgrimages for Hindu devotees. Every year, thousands of devotees undertake this pilgrimage to seek the blessings of Baba Barfani. Every year, the Amarnath Yatra weaves together devotion, endurance, and an unmistakable economic upswing for Jammu & Kashmir. This sacred pilgrimage to the Amarnath Cave, nestled deep within the Himalayas, doesn't just move pilgrims; it powers an entire region's tourism economy. 'The annual Amarnath Yatra is not only a spiritual pilgrimage but the life-giving soul of the economy of Jammu & Kashmir," says Mr. Ravi Gosain, President of the Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO). Pilgrims Powering Local Prosperity In the June-July window, more than three lakh pilgrims descended upon the valley, triggering a cascade of benefits across transport, hospitality, food services, and the local handicrafts market. 'Hotels, guesthouses, and homestays were overflowing, while local vendors and artisans had a hefty business," Mr. Gosain shares. The towns of Pahalgam and Baltal came alive with the energy of visitors, creating an unusually extended high season for surrounding tourist hotspots. Srinagar, thus extending the tourist season," says Mr. Gosain. This blend of spiritual travel and leisure tourism has led to tangible infrastructural gains: improved roads, enhanced healthcare access, and better mobile connectivity, which benefit both locals and tourists year-round. Challenges on the Trail: Managing Security and Sustainability Yet, the pilgrimage isn't without its hurdles. Environmental degradation, waste management, and safety remain key concerns. 'Security was the major concern, and therefore, to ensure safety, 50,000 security personnel were deployed after the terrifying recent events in Pahalgam," he notes. 'It's not just an annual recurrence, but an occasion of the local community coming together with new hope, offering visitors the best holiday experience," adds Mr. Gosain. The Amarnath Yatra stands as a vivid example of how faith-fueled travel can shape a region's economy, cultural exchange, and community spirit. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. 100m stretch of Yamunotri highway collapses amid heavy rain

Dehradun/Uttarkashi: Continuous monsoon rains on Saturday triggered a major collapse of nearly 100 metres of the Yamunotri highway near Phoolchatti — just 3 km before Jankichatti, a key halt en route to Yamunotri Dham — disrupting movement and halting the pilgrimage. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Around the same time, landslides on the Kedarnath trek route near Gaurikund led to a temporary halt in yatra movement. Following the Yamunotri road collapse, vehicular traffic came to a standstill. Small vehicles were diverted through the Kharsali alternative route, but heavy vehicles remained barred. Notably, around 20–25 days ago, the same stretch near Phoolchatti had shown signs of distress, with cracks and road narrowing due to persistent land subsidence, officials said. The PWD deployed two backhoe loaders, four tractors, and labourers to clear debris. Authorities said movement of small passenger vehicles continued via Kharsali, but concerns over supply chains remained. The food department confirmed that ration supplies in Jankichatti and nearby areas were sufficient until Aug. Around 4 am on Saturday, heavy debris and stones buried a 30-metre section of the Kedarnath trek route, about 50 metres from Gaurikund's Ghorapadav. District authorities, along with NDRF, SDRF, and police teams, launched rescue operations promptly. "Around 1,600 people have already been rescued, and efforts to evacuate another 700 were underway," said disaster management secretary Vinod Kumar Suman. Officials confirmed there were no reports of human or animal casualties. In Rudraprayag district, between 1 am and 4 am, sudden flooding and debris flow from the Saudi Gadere and Bedu Bagad streams damaged several structures, including houses, cowsheds, toilets, and roads in Chameli, Rumsi, Chamarara Tok, and Vijaynagar villages. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now About 8–10 buildings were filled with silt and stones. Relief operations began by 6 am. Debris was being cleared with the help of JCBs, and affected residents and livestock were shifted to safety at the time of filing this report. The local administration set up relief camps offering temporary housing, medical care, food, and essential services. Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami monitored the situation closely, and additional resources were mobilised as needed. Rudraprayag district disaster management officer Nandan Singh Rajwar told TOI, "The yatra was halted during the night but resumed on Saturday morning. Efforts to clear motorable and trek routes were ongoing. "

Marathwada drenched as rain lashes all 8 districts

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Incessant rainfall across Marathwada on Saturday brought about the much-needed relief to kharif crops. However, it has also triggered alerts of possible water discharge from major dams in all eight districts in the region. Increasing inflow of water in Godavari river caused Jayakwadi dam to reach 80.76% of its storage capacity with authorities warning that further inflow might necessitate the release of water into the riverbed. People have been urged to stay away from the river and livestock away too. In Parbhani, water flooded culverts, prompting the closure of Ziro Phata to Purna road in the Purna taluka. The Nizamapur–Bamani road in Ardhapur taluka was also shut due to water overflowing a local stream. Several areas have not seen sunlight for the past two days. In Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district heavy showers were recorded. Seasonal waterfall over the Ellora caves was flowing with full force. District authorities initiated crop damage assessment in revenue circles hit by heavy rain last week. Many houses in these areas were flooded, damaging household belongings. Vishnupuri dam was 93.27% full. Heavy rainfall was also reported in Himayatnagar, Jawalgaon, Sarsam, and Wai revenue circles. On Friday, the region received 10.6mm of rain, which increased to 25.7mm by 8am on Saturday. This season, Mukhed (190.6 mm) and Degloor (196.1 mm) are the only talukas with less than 200mm rainfall. Kinwat recorded the highest rainfall at 497mm. Authorities are planning to fill Antehswar and Digras medium projects located upstream of Vishnupuri. Downstream, gates at Amdura and Babhli barrages have been kept open. If the inflow continues overnight, one of Vishnupuri's gates may be opened, Ankulewar added.
