Title: England to win?
Content: France v England (Sat, 20:00 BST)
I keep changing my mind about how this game might work out for England, and I am sure that will continue right up until kick-off.
I feel like the Lionesses will probably need to be a little conservative if they are to start the defence of their title with a win, but I can see them keeping a clean sheet if they get things right at the back.
England lost two key defensive players, goalkeeper Mary Earps and centre-back Millie Bright, in the run-up to the tournament and while our backline is still at world-class level without them, replacing them has caused some disruption to our defensive unit.
So, I am sure there will still be a few issues that will need to be ironed out as this tournament progresses, but hopefully that won't cost England any goals or points here.
The key for England winning this game will be them being tight at the back - maintaining possession, controlling the game and reducing the number of mistakes. If they can do that and also create some chances for our forward line then our attackers are so ruthless, they will take care of the rest.
Prediction: France 0-1 England.

Title: 'Her talent speaks for itself'
Content: France v England (Sat, 20:00 BST)
Keira Walsh on the possibility of lining up against her Chelsea team-mate Sandy Baltimore on Saturday: 'Her talent speaks
for itself, you've seen some of the goals she has scored. Seeing her in
training – that's when you see the best of someone when you see them every
single day.
"She's got an incredibly gifted left-foot. For the size of her as
well, I think she's super strong and can hold the ball up really well because
she is quite small.
"She plays left-back most
of the time for Chelsea and with the French team she plays a little bit
further forward. I think Lucy [Bronze] will have played against her a lot in training [for Chelsea].
Hopefully Lucy knows how to get the better of her.'

More from Leah Williamson on her feelings after missing the World Cup through injury: "I've probably held some anxiety up until this moment just because I wanted to be here and I wanted to be with the team and experience another tournament for England.
"Being away from home - it's special when you come to another country to represent your country.
So I'm just to take everything in - it's a bit different to England in 2022.
"I am very excited but also so much has changed, so I am intrigued to come back and enjoy tournament football [again]."

Title: 'Greenwood a player you don't want to let down' - Williamson

England
England captain Leah Williamson on playing alongside 'best mate' Alex Greenwood: "Alex is an exceptional ball player. She sees things that not many do. She is always at such a high performance. When you play next to someone like Alex she demands so much of herself and naturally of you too.
She is one of my best mates so I have a good time playing [with her] but she is also one of those players that you don't want to let down because her level is so consistently high."
On differences between Greenwood and previous centre-back partner Millie Bright: "There are loads of differences. Mostly the physicality of it. Millie is blessed in ways that people like me and Alex are probably not. She has those strengths, I think maybe we have to do our talking in a different way."

Title: Drinks breaks during England game?
Content: France v England (Sat, 20:00 BST)
It looks like another hot day in Switzerland and several England players have been pictured cooling down with drinks at training this week.
According to the weather forecast, temperatures could reach as high as 30C (86F) in Zurich on Saturday although they are likely to fall to 26C (78F) by kick-off.
That's still pretty hot and there could be stoppages in play for drinks breaks.

We all know about Alessia Russo. But what about Russo the eight-year-old African pygmy goat, who loves predicting football results?
Russo, from All Things Wild in Worcestershire, was presented with two feeding stations - one adorned with an England flag, the other, which she ate from, bearing France's colours.
"Russo really is 'the GOAT' when it comes to making decisions...so it would not surprise me in the slightest if her predictions turned out to be correct," said Matt Parker, manager of the Honeybourne zoo.
"But we're all rooting for the Lionesses to retain their European title - even if Russo isn't convinced about the opening game."

The_gym_instructor: England aren't playing too well. I predict we will lose against France, draw with the Dutch and beat Wales, but finish third on goal difference. Sarina will quit and England will stagnate. The rest of Europe have caught up. Spain or Germany to win it.

‘Jota was there with me' says Trent Alexander-Arnold after Real Madrid Club World Cup win

Trent Alexander-Arnold believes ex- Liverpool team-mate Diogo Jota 'was there with me' after producing an assist to help Real Madrid into the Club World Cup semi-finals. Alexander-Arnold and Jota spent five years together at Liverpool, winning a number of trophies including last season's Premier League, before the right-back joined Madrid in June. The 28-year-old Jota tragically died in a car crash on Thursday, along with his brother Andre Silva, and their joint funeral was held in Portugal on Saturday. That evening, Alexander-Arnold took to the pitch in the United States and assisted Fran Garcia's goal in a 3-2 quarter-final win over Borussia Dortmund as they moved within two victories of the trophy in the revamped competition. And the full-back admitted Jota was in his thoughts throughout the clash. "I had to try to perform for the team and help them win the game, no matter how difficult it was," Alexander-Arnold told DAZN after the game. "As hard as it was to do it, I had to push myself to focus on what my job and role was. I tried to do it as best as I could, but it was difficult and I am not going to lie about that. "[Jota] was one of my close friends - and I am sure that's what he would have wanted me to do. I'm sure we would have had a laugh and joke about the assist as well. He was there with me, I am sure." Alexander-Arnold also shared his disbelief when he heard the news of the Portuguese's death, struggling to come to terms with the fact that someone who 'lit up a room' in the way Jota did could be gone. 'Some things are bigger than the game,' added Alexander-Arnold. 'It has been difficult but it's been very emotional, very heart-warming to see the footballing world uniting and come together to show their love and support to him and his family, and obviously his brother as well. "So although it's been difficult, it's also been a nice showing out from everyone, all clubs, all people, uniting and showing love and support for what must be a mind-blowingly hard time for the family. "I've been around him and his brother, his family, his amazing wife, his parents, his amazing three children. It's truly, truly heartbreaking to wake up to news like that. It's something that you would never, ever expect. "He was a very close friend, someone who lit up a room when he was in it. I shared the dressing room (with him) for five years (and have) amazing memories on and off the pitch with him. "It goes without saying he will never be forgotten by anyone. He will live long in all our memories for the amazing man and player he was."

Tour de France 2025 live: Stage 1 result as Jasper Philipsen sprints to victory as Evenepoel loses time in crosswinds

Belgian Jasper Philipsen won the opening stage of the Tour de France, a 184.9km ride around Lille, to claim the first yellow jersey of this year's race. The Alpecin-Deceuninck rider out-sprinted Eritrean Biniam Girmay and Norway's Soren Waerenskjold after crosswinds had caused chaos in the final 15 kilometres. Jonas Vingegaard and Visma Lease-a-Bike were right to the fore, forcing a split by pushing the pace, with fellow general classification contenders Remco Evenepoel and Primoz Roglic on the wrong side and losing 39 seconds come the finish. Tadej Pogacar, however, remained right on his rival's wheel. Come the finish, though, there seemed little doubt that victory would be Philipsen's with the Belgian comfortably the fastest finisher in the front group and with several teammates for company. He will wear yellow on Stage Two, with plenty more opportunities to come for the sprinters later in the tour. Tour de France stage 2 preview And here's a closer look at what tomorrow brings: Tour de France stage 2 preview: Jasper Philipsen faces fight to keep yellow jersey The yellow jersey is likely to change hands after just one day's action thanks to some punchy late climbs Lawrence Ostlere5 July 2025 21:26 Philipsen emerges from the choas to win stage 1 Report from a wild day in Lille: Jasper Philipsen emerges from the choas to win stage 1 of Tour de France in Lille The Belgian collected the 10th Tour de France stage of his career as Remco Evenepoel and Primoz Roglic lost valuable time after splits in the crosswinds Lawrence Ostlere5 July 2025 19:00 Stage 2 map and profile And here's what that lumpy route looks like tomorrow: Lawrence Ostlere5 July 2025 18:37 A look ahead to stage 2 Jasper Philipsen may have the yellow jersey on the start line tomorrow, but it will be expected to change shoulders given the lumpy finish to 209km stage two from Lauwin-Planque to Boulogne-sur-Mer. Lawrence Ostlere5 July 2025 18:19 Filippo Ganna abandons Tour de France after crash Another rider to go down was former world time trial champion Filippo Ganna, and the Italian later abandoned the race, a huge blow for the Ineos Grenadiers. In summing up the stage Geraint Thomas, riding his final Tour de France, said: "I should have stopped last year, to be honest. It was very stressful. "It's a big, big shame to lose Pippo. I saw the crash and it didn't look too bad but he gave his head a bit of a knock, so there's a concussion call which is the right thing, but it's a big, big shame to lose him." Lawrence Ostlere5 July 2025 18:02 Benjamin Thomas assumes King of the Mountains jersey Philipsen became the first pure sprinter to pull on yellow since Alexander Kristoff won the opening stage in Nice in 2020, but it was far from a straightforward bunch finish as strong crosswinds in northern France added to the stress of the opening day of the Tour, producing chaos. Benjamin Thomas, the Olympic Madison champion, ended the day in the king of the mountains jersey but only after crashing into Matteo Vercher as they crossed the line battling for the point at the top of the cobbled climb of Mont Cassel. Thomas had been part of an original five-man breakaway reeled in before the mid-point of the stage as teams fought for position. Lawrence Ostlere5 July 2025 17:43 Philipsen: 'I have dreamt about the yellow jersey' "It's really amazing," the Belgian said. "My 10th victory is something I will never forget. The team performance was incredible. I think we were there all day. It was very nervous but we knew today could be our day and we have to be in the front and we were there in the split. "The team did amazing and in the end we could just use our strength and finish it off... "I have dreamt about (the yellow jersey). Already I had the green jersey from two years ago but to have the yellow jersey hanging somewhere in my house in the next years is going to be amazing." Lawrence Ostlere5 July 2025 17:28 Stage summary: Philipsen grabs yellow jersey in chaotic opening Jasper Philipsen won a chaotic opening stage of the Tour de France to take the first yellow jersey of the race. Philipsen took his 10th career Tour stage but the first to put him into yellow as he beat Biniam Girmay in a much-reduced bunch sprint after crosswinds split the peloton to pieces. Overall hopefuls Remco Evenepoel and Primoz Roglic were both caught out, conceding 39 seconds to the main favourites Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard, with the Dane having done much to instigate the splits inside the last 20 kilometres of the 185km stage that started and finished in Lille. Fewer than 40 riders made it into the front group but Philipsen's Alpecin-Deceuninck team had four of them and they made it count, putting together an ideal lead-out for Philipsen to comfortably beat Girmay and Soren Waerenshjold to the line. Lawrence Ostlere5 July 2025 17:13 Favourites lose time on opening stage Yes, that's confirmed - already nearly 40 seconds lost to Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogacar for the other two members of the so-called 'Big Four'. That's a lot to claw back before the lumpier stuff is even close to starting. Here's the finish: Harry Latham-Coyle5 July 2025 16:46 Remco Evenepoel and Primoz Roglic lose time We're awaiting the official results, but it looks like it might be as much as 39 seconds lost by Remco Evenepoel and Primoz Roglic - brutal on the opening day.
