Padres Will Reportedly Pivot If They Fall Short In Trade With Guardians

The San Diego Padres aren't done after their big splash for Mason Miller early Thursday. According to MLB Insider Jon Heyman, the Padres are willing to pivot to other options if they fall short on the Cleveland Guardians' price for Steven Kwan. With time running out, the Padres will have to act fast if they want to get a deal made before the trade deadline. Kwan is their top target, but reports from Dennis Lin of The Athletic say that the Guardians were asking for Leo De Vries in a deal with the Padres. De Vries was dealt early Thursday for Mason Miller in a trade with the Athletics. If the Guardians don't have another option they would take, the Padres will have to pivot to another option. The other two targets that the Padres have shown interest in are Luis Robert Jr. of the Chicago White Sox and Ramón Laureano of the Baltimore Orioles. Laureano has been a fantastic pickup for the Orioles in the offseason, and with a .290 batting average entering Thursday, along with 15 home runs, teams in search of a quality outfield bat should be looking his way. With Laureano on an expiring contract, the Orioles are likely to trade him for a lower cost than the Guardians are asking for Kwan. Robert Jr. was expected to be one of the most sought-after trade chips at the deadline, but he has struggled to put together consistently good performances this season, which has hurt his trade value. If the Padres want to search for the higher upside, Robert Jr. could be the first move, although Laureano has been more consistent this season.
