Huntingtown topples No. 3 Leonardtown in a battle of SMAC softball powers

Washington Post10-04-2025

Mike Johnson has seen plenty iterations of a Huntingtown softball team over his 22-year tenure leading the southern Maryland program. The Hurricanes are perennial contenders, with five state championships in the last two decades. A trip to Bachman Sports Complex for the Maryland state semifinals has become an annual tradition for the Southern Maryland Athletic Conference powerhouse.
Despite the program's winning history, Johnson feels something different about this year's group — something he hasn't felt in years. He heard it in the dugout Wednesday, when senior shortstop Kayla Ripple whipped a ball to first base for a pivotal out against Leonardtown and the Hurricanes erupted into cheers. He saw it in the smiling faces of his players as they circled together in left field after a 2-1 win over the No. 3 Raiders, defending Maryland Class 4A champions.
'This group, they're together,' Johnson said. 'They enjoy being together, they've got each other's back, they're pulling for each other…I haven't seen this in a while, it is a special group.'
The Hurricanes (7-1), one season removed from a 4-2 loss to Rising Sun in the Maryland Class 2A title game, feel like they're closer than ever in their quest to return to College Park to compete for another state title. Maybe it's the collective desire to win that final game for the first time since 2019, Johnson said. Senior Jordyn Greever thinks it might be the bonds they've forged playing softball together over several seasons.
Whatever it is, it's working.
'We're all working together as a team,' Greever said. 'I felt like, in past years we were this little group and this little group, but we're all a team…It's just better when you're a full team and we all get along [and] know how to work together.'
With Huntingtown's one-run win over the Raiders Wednesday, Johnson's group is back atop the SMAC standings and primed for another run. The Hurricanes are undefeated in conference play and have scored double-digit runs in six of their seven wins. Their lone defeat came against No. 8 St. Mary's Ryken last week, 2-0.
Much of that success has come from the arm and bat of Greever, an All-Met honorable mention last season. With Greever in the pitching circle, Huntingtown has ceded just five runs.
Against Leonardtown (7-1), the Hurricanes' toughest conference test yet, Huntingtown needed another strong performance from Greever to pull out a statement win. The senior allowed just three Raiders hits on the afternoon as Johnson's team pulled themselves out of a late hole with a two-run sixth inning.
'This is what state caliber softball is all about, and I think we saw it in a regular season game,' Johnson said. 'This is sweet.'
In the bottom of the sixth inning, after senior Morgan Cranford laid down a deftly placed bunt to reach base, Greever roped a single into center field to tie the game with two outs in the frame. Senior Olivia Kendrick drove in the eventual game-winning run on the next at-bat and the Hurricanes held on despite a 14-strikeout afternoon from Leonardtown senior Claire Radford.
'I feel like the team energy was really good, and even though we had some bad at-bats, we were still able to pick it up,' Ripple said.
Greever collected the final out of the afternoon, flipping a ground ball to first base to clinch the victory. The Hurricanes' celebration was spirited but short. With postseason vengeance on their minds, Greever and her teammates quickly turned their attention to the road ahead.
'We definitely want to go back and win [the state title],' Greever said. 'That [loss] made us a little mad…we want to go get it.'

Elite 2027 quarterback likes how Mike Norvell coaches

The FSU Seminoles recently landed the quarterback of their 2026 recruiting class in Jaden O'Neal, and now they are working on landing one for the 2027 cycle. One of their top targets is Jayce Johnson, a four-star prospect from Valdosta, Georgia. He recently named them one of his top five schools and locked in his commitment date for Aug. 3. Johnson will be deciding between the Seminoles, Texas A&M Aggies, Tennessee Volunteers, Mississippi State Bulldogs, and South Carolina Gamecocks. He recently spoke with On3's Steve Wiltfong about his recruitment and explained what he likes about each school. For the Seminoles, it was all about head coach Mike Norvell and quarterback coach Tony Tokarz. 'The way Coach (Mike) Norvell coaches and the way Coach (Tony) Tokarz breaks down how he wants his quarterbacks to work within his offense," he said. Johnson is the No. 50 player and No. 5 quarterback in On3's industry ranking. The 6-foot-3, 205-pounder is also the No. 6 player from Georgia. He had a productive sophomore season for Lowndes High School, leading them to a 10-2 record. Johnson completed 67.2% (123-183) of his passes for 1,799 yards, 16 touchdowns, and three interceptions, per MaxPreps. He also rushed for 318 yards and three touchdowns on 79 carries, averaging 4.0 yards per carry. Texas A&M receives prediction to land elite 2027 4-star QB out of Georgia

Texas A&M's quarterback future presents an interesting discussion in today's transfer portal age, as 2025 starting QB Marcel Reed will need to succeed this season to continue in his role, while the depth chart includes redshirt freshman Miles O'Neill, who looks like the next man in line if Reed fails to deliver. However, 2026 four-star commit Helaman Casuga, who was one of the top performers during On3's Elite 11 event last week, looks like the future starter after Reed and O'Neill, so looking ahead to the 2027 cycle, coach Mike Elko and OC Collin Klein have their eyes on four-star quarterback Jayce Johnson, who is one his way to becoming a five-star prospect by this time next year. After landing in his top-five program list this week, Johnson is down to Tennessee, Mississippi State, South Carolina, Florida State, and Texas A&M. According to a source, Johnson and Collin Klein have developed a strong relationship based on what the Valdosta, Georgia native could do in his offense. On Saturday, it was revealed that Rivals recruiting insider Sam Spiegelman has predicted that Texas A&M will land Jayce Johnson, who is expected to announce his commitment on August 3. This isn't a shock given the staff's closeness to his development, combined with Elko's recruiting pipeline in Georgia, which features three high-ranking 2026 commits from the Peach State. Set to enter his all-important junior season at Lowndes High School, Johnson made his mark during his 2024 sophomore season after throwing for 1,799 yards, 16 touchdowns, and three interceptions, paired with over 300 yards and three touchdowns on the ground. According to Rivals, Johnson is currently positioned as the 29th-ranked prospect in the 2027 class, the 5th-ranked quarterback, and the 4th-ranked prospect in Georgia. Chaney Johnson inks deal with Cleveland Cavaliers, becomes fourth Tiger to join the NBA

Johnson becomes the fourth member of the Final Four squad to land an NBA deal. Another member of Auburn's Final Four squad has signed an NBA contract. Chaney Johnson, who was known for being a stellar support for Johni Broome during his time at Auburn, has landed a deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Johnson signed an "Exhibit 10" deal with the Cavaliers, meaning that Johnson will make the minimum salary on a one-year contract and will have the chance to earn a roster spot during training camp and the NBA Summer League. Johnson started in just five of the 73 games he played in two years at Auburn, but his impact goes greater than his bench role. Johnson averaged 7.0 points during his time in Auburn, shooting 54% with 4.2 boards per contest. He took a giant step forward last season by scoring 9.1 points and securing 4.9 rebounds per game while shooting 56% from the field. His energy and production ensured that Auburn never skipped a beat once star forward Johni Broome exited the floor. Johnson joins Johni Broome, Miles Kelly, and Dylan Cardwell by signing NBA deals this week. Broome was drafted in the second round of the NBA draft by the Philadelphia 76ers, while Kelly and Cardwell signed two-way contracts with the Dallas Mavericks and Sacramento Kings, respectively. The only downside to Johnson signing with Cleveland, however, is that he misses out on being teammates with former Tiger Isaac Okoro. Okoro was traded Saturday to the Chicago Bulls in exchange for Lonzo Ball.
