MMEA director-general, Admiral Datuk Mohd Rosli Abdullah, said the programme is not just about corporate social responsibility (CSR), but a long-term effort to build character, discipline, and identity in young people.
'SMK Sungai Baging was chosen because of our close collaboration since 2018. The school is also the first to establish the Maritime Cadet Corps, which started in January 2020. Currently, there are 310 cadets,' he said.

MCMC acts to fix mobile coverage gap in Kampung Sungai Relai

KOTA BHARU: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is stepping in to address the absence of mobile network coverage in Kampung Sungai Relai, Gua Musang. A recent inspection confirmed the area has no service despite the presence of a 76-metre tower, which is currently used only for microwave backhaul between two towers. 'A cellular quality of service test confirmed there is no mobile coverage in the village,' MCMC said in a statement today. To enforce compliance, MCMC has issued a Section 51(2) notice under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 to service providers failing to meet coverage standards. The commission is also working on a solution under the Jalinan Digital Negara (JENDELA) initiative, proposing a new tower site to enhance connectivity for residents. Additionally, discussions are underway with telecommunications companies to upgrade the existing tower to support 4G coverage via fibre-optic connections. This upgrade aims to provide a more stable and reliable network for the community. MCMC has assured continuous monitoring to ensure timely implementation, guaranteeing residents access to dependable communication services. - Bernama

Guidelines On Vertical School Development Finalised, MOE To Present To Cabinet Soon

KUALA LUMPUR, July 30 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Education (MOE) has finalised the Guidelines for Vertical School Development Planning, which take into account basic principles for school design, such as supervision and student safety. Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh said the guidelines would be presented to the Cabinet soon. He said the MOE took into account several factors in determining the vertical school concept, including vertical movement safety, accessibility for students with special needs, students' emotional and social well-being, and access to recreational spaces. "We also look into technical aspects such as acoustics, soundproofing, lighting and natural ventilation, emergency routes, the building structure, maintenance and strata management," he said during the oral question-and-answer session in the Dewan Rakyat today. He was replying to a question from Datuk Muslimin Yahaya (PN–Sungai Besar) on Kuala Lumpur City Hall's (DBKL) proposal to construct a two-block vertical school with between 10 and 17 storeys, and the measures taken by the MOE to ensure that basic safety facilities in schools are functioning properly. Wong further said that an engagement session had also been conducted by the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) involving the Department of Town and Country Planning (PLANMalaysia), the Public Works Department, the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department, as well as parents and teachers, to refine the design requirements for vertical schools. He said KPKT had proposed three modules, namely constructing schools on land specifically designated for education purposes; incorporating community facilities such as clinics and libraries; and integrating school buildings with residential and commercial developments. 'School design must be curriculum-friendly, sustainable and flexible, and adhere to the principles of a sense of belonging, attractiveness, safety and ease of maintenance,' he said. Wong added that the implementation of vertical schools would be subject to assessment by the MOE and relevant technical agencies, particularly in areas with populations exceeding one million.

Museums Evolving Into Hubs For Learning, Social Engagement

BALING, July 29 (Bernama) -- Evolving with the times, the role of museums has gone beyond storing and displaying artefacts to becoming centres for learning and social engagement, said Deputy Minister of National Unity, K. Saraswathy. She said the museum within the community concept emphasises active public involvement in various aspects of museum management and activities. 'Through this approach, the community is not merely visitors but also strategic partners in the research, preservation, conservation and development of exhibition content and museum activities,' she said at the opening of the Kembara Ilmu Jom Gi Baling community outreach in conjunction with the national-level International Museum Day Festival at Dusun Tok Wak, near here, today. Also present were Department of Museums Malaysia director-general Datuk Kamarul Baharin A Kassim, Kedah Museum director Suhaidi Syukri and Baling district officer Yazlan Sunardie Che Yahaya. Saraswathy said museums serve as a collaborative platform between institutions and the community, adding that initiatives such as the Kembara Ilmu Jom Gi Baling are laudable efforts to foster a sense of ownership among the public. "History, heritage, and culture are powerful tools in shaping national identity and strengthening unity among the multiracial Malaysian society. 'Through this community-based museum concept, public involvement in safeguarding cultural heritage can be strengthened…where they feel that their heritage, culture and history are valued and protected,' she said, stressing that intergenerational knowledge exchange can also be fostered, providing communities with the space to voice their views in the development of museum programmes and activities. 'The community-based museum approach not only strengthens the relationship between cultural institutions and the public but also helps preserve the identity of communities often sidelined from the mainstream,' she said, emphasising that the concept reflects the transformation of museums into more inclusive entities that foster greater awareness of identity and history among the people. The Kembara Ilmu Jom Gi Baling programme was organised by the Ministry of National Unity through the Department of Museums Malaysia, in collaboration with the Kedah Museum Board, featuring various activities including visits to Gua Sireh, Baling Negotiation Gallery, distribution of food baskets to the Kensiu Orang Asli community in Ulu Legong and asnaf individuals from the Siong sub-district.
