From scandal to strategy: Kyle Moyer's new role at Arrow McLaren Racing
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Kyle Moyer, one of the three Team Penske executives fired during an Indianapolis 500 scandal, has been hired by Arrow McLaren Racing and will be with the IndyCar team this coming week for a test session at Iowa Speedway.
Moyer was hand-selected to join McLaren by team principal Tony Kanaan. The two won the 2004 IndyCar championship together at Andretti Global. Moyer was Kanaan's team manager at the time.
At McLaren, Moyer will be the director of competition and assist Scott Harner, who is the director of race operations. He will also replace Kanaan as strategist for Nolan Siegel, freeing Kanaan to work on race day with all three McLaren drivers.
Moyer's official start date is June 30. Kanaan said almost the entire industry tried to hire Moyer after his May firing at Penske, but the previous relationship between Moyer and Kanaan gave McLaren the edge.
'Kyle is one of the best strategists in the paddock, so talking about his qualities, not just about him as a human being, he knows a lot about racing,' Kanaan told The Associated Press. 'Kyle probably is one of the top guys of knowledge of IndyCar — he's been around it his entire life.
'And Kyle is a people person, he's that kind of guy that captivates people and people want to work for Kyle,' Kanaan continued. 'At the same time, he is very direct and he will call you out and he makes it so every person I've ever seen working for Kyle wanted to work for Kyle. That's something that I experienced in my career and that is probably the biggest thing. The respect that I have for the guy is unbelievable.'
Moyer's popularity was evident when Penske driver Scott McLaughlin lashed out after the trio of firings ahead of the Indy 500 . Moyer was let go along with team president Tim Cindric, a 25-year Penske employee, and managing director Ron Ruzewski.
Moyer was Penske's general manager of the IndyCar program and the strategist for McLaughlin's car.
The firings followed the discovery that the cars of Josef Newgarden and Will Power had illegally modified rear attenuators; Cindric said seams on the safety part had been sealed for aesthetic purposes, but the rulebook clearly stated no alterations could be made to the part.
It was the second major technical violation for Penske cars in just over a year and team owner Roger Penske was left with no choice but to fire his top three executives. Penske owns the three-car race team, the IndyCar Series, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Indianapolis 500.
'Ultimately, those three guys are friends of mine and have done a tremendous amount in my career to get me to this point,' McLaughlin said in May after the firings. 'I guess you could say there's a sadness from my perspective. At the end of the day I drive for Roger Penske. I respect the decision. I understand the decision. We move forward.'
Kanaan said he was shocked that Moyer did not have a non-compete clause and was available to McLaren immediately. He believes Moyer will be a help to Siegel, the 20-year-old in his first full season of IndyCar.
Siegel heads into Sunday's race at Road America in Wisconsin ranked 21st in the standings.
Moyer will eventually relocate from North Carolina, where Penske is based, to Indianapolis for his role with McLaren.

Sam Bennett says he's staying in Florida with hopes Panthers turn into a dynasty
Sam Bennett could have gone to free agency and picked his landing spot, plus probably could have signed for much more money than the Florida Panthers were able to offer. Instead, he chose winning. Bennett, the reigning Conn Smythe Award winner as playoff MVP of Florida's most recent run to the Stanley Cup, spoke out Saturday about his decision to sign an eight-year, $64 million deal with the Panthers. His reasoning was actually quite simple. "I think we have a lot more success in our future," Bennett said. It's not hard to envision that, given how the back-to-back Stanley Cup champions now have eight core players — Bennett, Aleksander Barkov, Matthew Tkachuk, Sam Reinhart, Carter Verhaeghe, Gustav Forsling, Anton Lundell and Seth Jones — under contract through at least 2030. Bennett's status, especially after winning the Conn Smythe following a 15-goal performance in the playoffs, might have seemed to be in some question a couple weeks ago. He announced at a Miami nightclub last week that he was staying — there was no deal at the time, and his agent wasn't happy that he did that — but it was clear that Bennett was hoping something would get done in Florida. Teammates were evidently thrilled when the news broke Friday night. "I got like three FaceTimes right away from the boys," Bennett said. "A couple of them were together and they were so fired up. The group chat was going nuts. I've said it a million times, this group is so tight. So many guys that really care about each other. I was definitely feeling the love last night." Bennett is critical to the Panthers at both ends. He was one of three players in the NHL this season — Ottawa's Brady Tkachuk, Matthew Tkachuk's brother, and Washington's Tom Wilson were the other two — with at least 50 points and 90 penalty minutes. He said his decision came down to not seeing a need to take risks. He loves playing in Florida, loves being part of the Panthers, loves who he goes to work with every day. More money or a new role wasn't going to outweigh all of that. "I think we really have the chance to truly make this team a dynasty," Bennett said. "I'm really just grateful that I get the chance to be a part of it. There are so many pieces in this puzzle that create this team and the success that this team has. And just to be a small piece of that is an honor. Looking forward to growing this legacy for the next eight years, for sure."

This week the New York Yankees announced that the bobblehead giveaway for its Seinfeld Night promotion on Aug. 21 for its game against the Boston Red Sox will be one of George Costanza sleeping under his desk. The unique giveaway, which Seinfeld fans will surely agree is perhaps the greatest bobblehead ever created, is a reference to an episode from season eight of the show titled 'The Nap.' 'The Storm' defeated Asuka in the finals of the 2025 Queen of the Ring tournament to inch one step closer to her first singles championship in WWE. In the most important match of her young WWE career, Cargill planted 'The Empress of Tomorrow' with a massive Jaded finisher out of nowhere to punch her ticket to SummerSlam. The two stars battled in a match largely dominated by Asuka, but ultimately, Cargill stood tall after hitting her finisher to cap off a mediocre QOTR finals match. With the victory, Cargill will now go on to face the WWE Women's Champion, currently Tiffany Stratton, at WWE's first-ever two-night SummerSlam in August. On a recent episode of Wrestling Observer Radio (h/t Wrestling Inc), Meltzer said, ""Jade was supposed to be, if she hadn't gotten hurt, Jade was supposed to be champion by WrestleMania. And defending it at WrestleMania. Not [win it] at WrestleMania, but before WrestleMania." While Cargill's injury derailed those championship plans temporarily, her career appears to be back on track. Cargill's win over Asuka at WWE Night of Champions, albeit in a somewhat sloppy performance, was her biggest singles victory to date, and with that win, she's just weeks away from getting a shot at SmackDown's WWE Women's Championship. Why is that so intriguing? Well, SmackDown's Naomi, Cargill's most hated rival, is currently holding the Money in the Bank briefcase, making her a virtual shoo-in to be the world champion in the near future. Cargill's win over Asuka only makes it clearer where WWE should take Naomi's storyline. The best bet here is that Cargill beats Stratton at SummerSlam only for Naomi to instantly cash in on Cargill and take the WWE Women's title from her. Alternatively, Naomi could conceivably cash in during the match, prevent Cargill from beating Stratton and then pin Stratton herself. Regardless of the specifics, Cargill's massive victory in the Queen of the Ring finals at WWE Night of Champions almost certainly will reignite her feud with Naomi at SummerSlam.
