Former USC wide receiver and Seahawks assistant marvels at Pete Carroll's longevity

USA Today2 days ago
It has now been more than 15 years since Pete Carroll left USC. Despite being nearly 74 years old, however, the head coach is still at the top of his game a decade and a half later. This fall, Carroll will enter his first season as head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders, looking to turn around a franchise that has not had much success in several decades. On Wednesday, The Athletic ran a profile of Carroll and how he continues to thrive despite his age. The story included a fascinating quote from a wide receiver who played for Carroll at USC before going on to serve as his right-hand man with the Seattle Seahawks for over a decade.
'Ben Malcolmson played for Carroll at USC and later served as his assistant for over a decade with the Seahawks,' they wrote. 'He's seen Carroll build and reaffirm team culture repeatedly. Age hasn't changed his approach.
'Early in his Seahawks tenure, Carroll buzzed around the building with the same energy level as a kid at recess. Malcolmson figured it was due to all the Mountain Dew he drank. Years later, Carroll switched his diet, cutting down on unhealthy foods, caffeine and sugar.
''I think he had more energy after that,' Malcolmson said recently.
'It wasn't the Mountain Dew.
''He doesn't believe he's got to get old,' Malcolmson said. 'He's like Benjamin Button.''
More than two decades after winning back-to-back national championships at USC, Carroll is still coaching with the same energy that he has had his entire career. Regardless of how his tenure in Las Vegas goes, that in itself is quite impressive.

USC football countdown to kickoff—Justin Dedich in focus

The countdown to USC's 2025 football season is officially on! The Trojans kick off their new campaign 57 days from today. You need something to help you while away the days and hours in the spring and summer. This is one way to do so. In this new series, countdown to kickoff, we will be counting down the days by highlighting a notable Trojan who wore each number. Today, we look at former USC offensive lineman Justin Dedich. Position: Offensive line Years played at USC: 2018-2023 Career highlights: After redshirting his freshman year on campus in 2018, Dedich served as a backup offensive lineman for the Trojans for the majority of the next three seasons. He emerged as a starter towards the end of the 2021 season, and was the full-time starter at right guard in 2022. Taking advantage of his extra COVID year of eligibility, Dedich returned to USC in 2023, starting at center. Dedich drew acclaim for his strong leadership during his time in Cardinal and Gold. In both the 2022 and 2023 seasons, he was named a team captain. Dedich was known for firing up his teammates in the huddle with passionate, energetic speaches prior to kickoff. After USC: Dedich signed with the Los Angeles Rams as an undrafted free agent following the 2024 NFL Draft. Although he did not initially make the team, Dedich was signed to the active roster early in the year due to injuries on the offensive line. He would go on to appear in 13 games during the 2024 season, even starting three. Dedich now enters his second year in the league. He will look to play an even bigger role for Los Angeles in 2025.

USC Receives Underwhelming Big Ten Preseason Ranking

USC Receives Underwhelming Big Ten Preseason Ranking originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The 2024 season was a forgettable one for the USC Trojans and head coach Lincoln Riley, as they finished with a 7-6 record. That did finish with a win over the Texas A&M Aggies in the Las Vegas Bowl. However, it was still significantly below the program's expectations. Advertisement The famous college football analyst Phil Steele has dropped his Big Ten Power Rankings for On3, and the spot USC landed in was rather underwhelming. Steele slotted the Trojans in at No. 8, which is way lower than Riley and his team would want to finish. However, it does give them bulletin board material heading into the 2025 season, and I'm sure it won't be the last. USC coach Lincoln Riley© Gary A. Vasquez-Imagn Images In his preview of what could be for USC next season, Steele wrote, "Throughout his career, Riley has been known for recruiting and developing excellent quarterbacks. That's been no different at USC. The hope for the Trojans is that Jayden Maiava is going to be able to be that next great quarterback. If he does, then USC is expecting to have a much better season." Advertisement Riley's team was expected to land behind teams such as the Ohio State Buckeyes and Oregon Ducks. However, being behind the Nebraska Cornhuskers and the Illinois Fighting Illini will not go down well with the fan base. The six losses they had in 2024, five of which were one-point losses, meant that two or three games swung the other way, and the media may have a different opinion going into this season. Strange Darren Waller Trade Highlights Giants' Failings

Strange Darren Waller Trade Highlights Giants' Failings originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Following their surprise playoff victory in the 2023 playoffs, the New York Giants got bold. They knew they needed to find top-notch talent to incorporate into their roster if they wanted to continue to move upward and compete with the best teams in their division and more. Advertisement Could the Giants stick with the likes of the Dallas Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles? Could they make the moves to do so? Alas, the changes they made had a different effect on the franchise. Since their surprising 9-7-1 season in 2022, and their playoff win in the postseason, New York has seen their win total decrease in major ways. A big part of that has been the lack of production from some of the team's biggest acquisitions. Former tight end Darren Waller is among the best examples of this. Waller played just a single season with New York in 2023 after being acquired from the Las Vegas Raiders. The former sixth-round pick recorded 52 catches for over 550 yards and a single touchdown reception. He also missed five games due to injuries. Advertisement The former Pro Bowler retired shortly after the season. ... very much making it sound like he simply didn't like football anymore. After a year off the field, Waller is back - as a member of the Miami Dolphins. In a strange arrangement, New York traded the 32-year-old this week to allow Waller a chance to return to playing at the NFL level. Waller's retirement and return just highlight how massive some of Giants general manager Joe Schoen's failings during the offseason have been. New York has seen top draft picks be unable to make a positive impact, while acquisitions provide little relief. It's a big reason the team won just three games last year. Advertisement Waller's trade is a relatively good move for the G-Men, as they will get a little something back for a retired player. But the deal jumping into the headlines also highlights the whiff of a trade that brought Waller here in the first place, while also exposing just how much work needs to be done here to get this franchise back in shape to truly compete in the NFC East. And not just for one blip-on-the-radar screen playoff appearance.
