Water crisis exacerbated amid delays in pipeline repairs
A debilitating water crisis in the metropolitan city has intensified as ongoing repair work on a major water supply line has disrupted access to over 400 million gallons of water over the past two days. According to Karachi Water and Sanitation Corporation (KWSC) officials, the repair is expected to take at least two more days, leaving 40 to 50 per cent of the metropolis facing severe water shortages. The crisis stems from leaks and bursts in the aging pipeline infrastructure, exacerbated by frequent power outages at the pumping stations. These issues have become routine and continue to hinder the already strained water distribution system. Residents in many areas are struggling to access even basic water supplies, leading to widespread frustration and hardship. KWSC officials confirmed that repair work is underway on the 84-inch main supply line. While repairs have been completed at three to four critical points, work continues on the remaining sections. A KWSC spokesperson stated that around 200 million gallons of water is currently not being delivered to the city due to the repair works. At present, Karachi is receiving about 450 million gallons of water daily, much below the required amount. The impact of the disruption has been felt in several neighbourhoods, including Korangi, Landhi, Malir, Shah Faisal Colony, Gulistan-e-Johar, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Jamshed Road, PIB Colony, the Old City Area, Lyari, Defence, Clifton, and Mehmoodabad. The crisis has also affected government-operated water hydrants. Only 10 per cent of water is currently being supplied from the Landhi and Sherpao hydrants, while 40 to 50 per cent is coming from the NEPA and Safoora hydrants. However, the Sakhi Hassan Crush One and Two facilities remain operational. Officials have called upon Karachiites to conserve water and use it judiciously during this period. The KWSC assured citizens that repair work is being expedited and is likely to be completed by Sunday.

KARACHI: The repair of damaged 84-inch water pipeline on University Road is scheduled to begin late on Sunday (today) which may aggravate the water crisis in the city. The pipeline, which burst on December 3 during construction of the Red Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project, will disrupt water supply to several neighbourhoods of the metropolis starting Monday. The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSB) has announced that the repair work is expected to take two to three days, during which water supply to several areas will be affected. Officials have assured that necessary materials, including pipes and collars, are ready to expedite the repairs. Areas likely to face the brunt of the water shortage include Korangi, Landhi, Shah Faisal Colony, Malir, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Old City Area, Tariq Road, Lyari, Liaquatabad, PIB Colony, and several adjoining localities. Residents in these areas are urged to store water and use it sparingly during the repair period. Some pumps will be temporarily shut down to facilitate the repair process, further compounding the crisis. KWSC officials have appealed to citizens to act responsibly and conserve water during this critical time. The city has been grappling with frequent disruptions in water supply, and this latest repair work underscores the urgent need for infrastructure improvements to prevent such crises in the future.
