Man discovers affair, wife conspires with lover to steal his phone to destroy proof

Time of India11-07-2025
New Delhi: A bizarre tale of love, lies and crime came to the fore when police started investigating a phone snatching case in south Delhi's Fatehpur Beri. A man, suspecting infidelity, discovered intimate chats between his wife and her boyfriend on her mobile phone and saved them on his device.
Realising that she was exposed, the wife allegedly conspired with her lover and convinced him to steal the phone to destroy the evidence.
The boyfriend and his friend travelled from Rajasthan, checked into a hotel in Old Delhi and rented a scooter. They then snatched the husband's phone. However, Delhi Police soon cracked the case using CCTV footage. One accused was arrested and the woman was bound down while the boyfriend is absconding.
On June 19, police received a complaint that two masked men on a scooter had snatched the phone of a man employed at a govt hospital. They analysed CCTV footage from nearby locations, and with the help of an automatic numberplate recognition camera, retrieved the scooter's registration number and traced the owner in Ghaziabad.

He told police that he lent the vehicle to a person running a two-wheeler rental service. Investigators approached the service provider, who confirmed that the scooter was rented out to two persons and gave police the Aadhaar card of one of them, narrowing down the search.

Using details from the Aadhaar card and the mobile number given in the rental agreement, police tracked the suspects to Balotra in Rajasthan's Barmer district. Deputy commissioner of police (south) Ankit Chauhan formed a special team under station house officer Rajesh Sharma of Fatehpur Beri police station. The team travelled to Rajasthan and arrested Ankit Gahlot, one of the accused.
Gahlot confessed that the victim's wife was in an illicit relationship with his friend Rahul.
She wanted to delete her intimate photographs with Rahul saved on her husband's mobile phone and conspired with Rahul to get the device stolen, he said.
"They were in a relationship for the past five years. Though she got married two years ago, the relationship continued," said an officer. Rahul asked Gahlot for help and they travelled to Delhi. The woman shared her husband's daily schedule, and on June 18, they rented a scooter. A day later, they executed the snatching plan. "We are searching for her lover," police said.
The woman has been bound down, which means she is bound to appear before the investigating officer whenever required and can't leave the city without informing police.

‘No arrest, only lawful document verification': Odisha Advocate General tells Calcutta HC on migrant detentions

The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday asked the Advocate General of Odisha to submit an affidavit on the alleged detention of Bengali-speaking migrant workers who had travelled to the state for work. The division bench of Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty and Justice Reetobroto Kumar Mitra asked, 'Apprise us whether they were arrested, interrogated, or detained.' The Advocate General of Odisha, appearing virtually, denied any arrest. According to the petitioners' counsel, those detained were allegedly released only after the court intervened. Raghunath Chakraborty, appearing for the petitioners, said, 'The detention was illegal and thus compensation should be provided. Those who have been released have stated that many others like them remain in custody — detained illegally and not produced before a magistrate.' 'There have been no arrests. As per the Foreigners Act, 1946, Section 3, when the citizenship of suspected persons is in doubt, we investigate for lawful verification of documents. People from all over the country come to work here, and lawfully, on suspicion, their documents are verified,' the Odisha Advocate General submitted. Senior counsel Kalyan Banerjee, appearing for the petitioners, argued, 'There must be some grounds. Only on suspicion, they cannot declare someone a foreigner.' After hearing all parties, the court directed the Odisha government to submit its affidavit in opposition by August 20. The petitioners were directed to file replies by August 27, and the matter will be taken up on August 29. The court also directed Advocate General Ashok Kumar Acharya to be present in person for the next hearing. The court is hearing two habeas corpus petitions filed earlier this month against Odisha Police, accusing it of illegally detaining Bengali-speaking migrant workers. One of the petitions was filed by Nasima Mondal, mother of Rakhibul Islam Mondal who is a resident of Hariharpara in Murshidabad and was allegedly detained in Odisha's Jagatsinghpur district. She moved the High Court under Article 226 of the Constitution, claiming her son was held for more than 24 hours without being produced before a magistrate in violation of his fundamental rights. According to her petition, police allegedly picked up Rakhibul during an identity verification drive on June 25 and 'ignored valid documents' in his possession — including Aadhaar, voter ID, and ration card. The petitioner alleged he was targeted for speaking Bengali and suspected of being Bangladeshi, without any proper identity checks. Another petition was filed by Rajjak Sheikh, also from Hariharpara, seeking the release of his son, Sainur Islam. He claimed Jagatsinghpur police detained his son during a similar identity verification drive on June 30.

Fresno shooting: Kuvar Kumar killed outside home; police say attack 'not random'

A 33-year-old man, identified as Kuvar Kumar, was shot and killed outside his home in northwest Fresno on the evening of Monday, 21 July. Fresno Police said officers were dispatched to the area of State Avenue and Acacia Avenue at around 6:52 pm following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers found Kumar unresponsive with multiple gunshot wounds. Despite life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene. According to investigators, Kumar had just returned home when he was ambushed and fatally shot. Two people were reportedly inside the residence at the time of the attack, including Kumar's brother. Homicide detectives who responded to the scene say the presence of two distinct types of shell casings suggests there may have been more than one shooter. Police believe the act was targeted rather than random. The Fresno Police Department is actively canvassing the neighbourhood in search of witnesses or surveillance footage that may assist in identifying the suspects. No descriptions of the attackers have been released yet, and authorities have urged the public to come forward with any relevant information. 'This is an active investigation, and we are asking anyone who may have seen or heard anything to reach out,' said a spokesperson. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it legal?
