Springboks wanted to be brave and bold with ball in hand against Barbarians, says captain Jesse Kriel

It rained almost non-stop in Cape Town this week, and when more grey skies greeted the Mother City on Saturday, you were expecting the worst as a rugby fan.
Despite the Barbarians being in town for what is usually a festival-type running-rugby game, the slippery conditions would've been expected to affect both teams' approach at Cape Town Stadium.
But the Boks actually didn't hold back in that regard in their 54-7 victory over the invitation side to entertain the 45,000-strong crowd.
As early as the fourth minute, there were an array of impressive passes from the home side that would've been expected from the visitors.
The South Africans put together a series of phases, with Lood de Jager running hard a few times, debutant prop Asenathi Ntlabakanye showcasing his deft handling skills, and Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu slinging out a long pass to Kurt-Lee Arendse out wide.
Lively scrumhalf Morné van den Berg also kept the tempo going with some slick clearances from the base, and the one audacious dummy from Feinberg-Mngomezulu had his Cape fans dancing in the stands.
Fullback Aphelele Fassi also entered the attack chat, and delivered two delicious grubbers that set up the first two tries by Malcolm Marx and Cheslin Kolbe.
Arendse and Kolbe were energetic throughout the eight-try rout, and that attack-minded theme continued into the second half, with captain Jesse Kriel breaking the line, and centre partner Damian de Allende pushing through a deft grubber for Arendse's touchdown.
The Tony Brown playbook was on full show, and the growth in the Bok game in such dreary conditions speaks volumes about how they are pushing the envelope ahead of the blockbuster two Tests against the All Blacks in New Zealand in September.
'I'm obviously very happy with all of that. I think it actually started in the week. On Wednesday, we spoke about our mindset and mentality going into training – whether we are going to let the weather affect us or not. I think it was nothing different today,' Kriel said in the post-match press conference.
'We came in here positive. We wanted to be brave and bold with the ball in hand, and I think we looked dangerous with turnover ball.
'It's always great if you get the ball into guys like Fassi, Cheslin and Kurt-Lee's hands.
'They are special rugby players, and they can make something out of nothing. Ja, I think we saw a lot of that today.'
Bok coach Rassie Erasmus said afterwards that he was 'satisfied' with the performance, but felt that they had gone a bit too far on attack at times in the wet weather.
But the South Africans are on the right trajectory heading into next Saturday's first Test against Italy at Loftus Versfeld.
'We won't get carried away with a game like this. We know it's a festival game and we are playing at home against a team that only practiced a few times together,' Erasmus said.
'But certain things came through. We want to get better in the next matches that we will play, where we are trying to focus a lot on us.
'When we hit the Rugby Championship – and Georgia will also be a grind…
'If the weather was drier, I think some of the line-breaks and half-gaps that we got, we were a bit ambitious in trying to offload and just force the last pass. In dry weather, I think that could've stuck.
'But after halftime, when the guys spoke about that, they toned it down a little bit, and we played a little bit more conservatively and got more points.
'So, I guess we'll get used to this weather if we get that again, but we can't wait to play on a dry pitch and still improve on our attack.'

Jean Kleyn sidelined with injury as Springboks prepare for Italy showdown

Springbok lock Jean Kleyn put in a strong 80-minute performance against the Barbarians this past Saturday but was ruled out with an injury ahead of the mid-year Test matches against Italy and Georgia. Image: BackpagePix The Springboks are keeping their feet firmly on the ground, despite flooring the Barbarians this past Saturday, as they head into their first Test week from Monday. After a rousing 54-7 victory at a wet and muddy DHL Stadium in Cape Town over the Baabaas, the world champions have set their sights on the double Tests against Italy, starting with Saturday's opening encounter at Loftus Versfeld. Lock Jean Kleyn is the only reported serious injury. He has been withdrawn from the squad and will return to his club side Munster where he will undergo rehabilitation. Springbok head coach Rassie Erasmus said they have enough locks to cover for Kleyn, and he won't be replaced. Video Player is loading. 'But injuries are part of the game, and we are fortunate to have good depth at lock within the squad, so there is no need for us to replace him at this stage.' Despite the loss of Kleyn, Erasmus will still have a strong player-base to choose from ahead of the first Test. He indicated they would announce two squads for the Italy series with a core group of players involved in both matches. Injury update: #Springboks lock ruled out of squad after Barbarians game 🚑#ForeverGreenForeverGold — Springboks (@Springboks) June 29, 2025 The squad for 'Italy 1' will focus on this weekend's match, while 'Italy 2' will focus on the second Test in Gqeberha next weekend. 'The players have a fairly good idea who will play Italy 1,' Erasmus confirmed. 'Those who played against the Barbarians knew two weeks ago already that they were in the team, so they had two weeks of training together. On Sunday evening we will announce the two sides for Italy. 'That always comes with a caveat, because if things don't go according to plan, Italy 2 can always change. However, we do know who the core guys are. The 14, 15, or 16 playing this coming weekend, but that is not position-specific. Thanks for a great game @Barbarian_FC, we hope you had a good time in South Africa, we'd love to see you back here soon 🤝#Springboks #ForeverGreenForeverGold #BARvRSA — Springboks (@Springboks) June 28, 2025 'Some guys, though, showed us that they can do it at this level,' Erasmus added, referring to some of the uncapped players who put their hand up. 'But we will layer them in to ensure there is a balance.' The Bok coach wants to see his squad strike a balance so that, after the Georgia Test (19 July in Nelspruit), they have a group of 45-50 players who have had some game time ahead of the Rugby Championship later this year. Erasmus emphasised that they can't get too carried away with the runaway victory, although there were enough positive moments to build their season on. Reaction from @RassieRugby after the BaaBaas win: 'We want to get better, the next three matches we'll be trying to focus on us before we hit the Castle Lager Rugby Championship' 🗣#Springboks #ForeverGreenForeverGold #BARvRSA — Springboks (@Springboks) June 28, 2025

Springboks suffer injury blow on eve of Test season

The Springboks will kick off their Test season with their opening clash against Italy this Saturday, but unfortunately lock Jean Kleyn has been ruled out of the squad travelling to Johannesburg after sustaining an injury during the team's 54-7 victory against the Barbarians on Saturday. Kleyn, who started the match with lock partner Lood de Jager, will return to Irish club Munster to recover from the injury and undergo the necessary rehabilitation. The nature of the injury has not been specified, but the fact that Kleyn has been released from the squad and sent back to Ireland does suggest he is set for a lengthy period on the sidelines. 'We feel for Jean,' said Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus, 'but injuries are part of the game, and we are fortunate to have good depth at lock within the squad, so there is no need for us to replace him at this stage.' The Springboks made the journey from Cape Town to Johannesburg on Sunday to begin their preparations for the opening match of the Incoming Series against Italy at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria on Saturday, 5 July. They will line up against Italy again a week later at the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium in Gqeberha before taking on Georgia at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit in the closing match of the series on Saturday 19 July. The team had Sunday off to travel and recover from Saturday's encounter and will begin their on-field preparations for the first official Test match of the season on Monday. Bok update: Lood back with a bang, but Kleyn ruled out with injury

The Boks will now turn their attention to the first Test against Italy in Pretoria this coming weekend. There was good and bad news on the lock front for the Springboks following the season-opening match against the Barbarians in Cape Town on Saturday. The good news is the return to full fitness and form of Lood de Jager, who played a full 80 minutes in Cape Town in his first match back in the green and gold for two years. De Jager in fine form De Jager also missed out on the 2023 World Cup because of injuries and there were fears following the 2019 World Cup win in Japan that the tall lock's career might be on the line because of injury. But, De Jager was back to his best on Saturday, calling the lineouts, which worked a treat for the Boks, while his all-action performance, in the lineouts and loose, was excellent. De Jager made several tackles and carried regularly in a performance which delighted his coach Rassie Erasmus. 'The condition that he had was almost career ending, but when we did the fitness testing three weeks ago, he was exceptional,' said Erasmus of De Jager, who's been playing rugby in Japan for the last season. 'His body might be 32 or 33, but he has had some two or three years 'rest' in the last couple of years, and I think that showed. I also thought Jean Kleyn went deep into the game very well. We're very glad Lood came through it, and we have some nice depth at lock now.' Kleyn out Kleyn though picked up an undisclosed injury in the match and he has been ruled out of the upcoming Tests against Italy (two) and Georgia. 'We feel for Jean,' said Erasmus, 'but injuries are part of the game, and we are fortunate to have good depth at lock within the squad, so there is no need for us to replace him at this stage.' Kleyn will return to Irish club Munster to recover from the injury and undergo the necessary rehabilitation. Besides De Jager, the other locks in the squad are Eben Etzebeth, RG Snyman, Franco Mostert, Salmaan Moerat, Ruan Nortje, and Cobus Wiese, while Jean-Luc du Preez and Pieter-Steph du Toit are also comfortable playing in the second row. The Boks travel to Joburg on Sunday and get their preparations under way for the first Test against Italy, at Loftus this coming Saturday, on Monday. Erasmus will name his team for the first Italy Test on Tuesday.
