T Rowe favours Thailand, Malaysia bonds on scope for rate cuts
T. Rowe Price Group Inc. likes local bonds in Thailand and Malaysia, betting that further monetary easing will outweigh currency gains as a key driver of investor returns. Malaysia's central bank has potential to deliver several more interest rate cuts after its first policy easing in five years earlier this month, while persistent deflation in Thailand should extend support for its debt despite already-low yields, said Leonard Kwan, a Hong Kong-based portfolio manager at the US asset manager. Kwan, who manages the firm's Emerging Markets Bond Strategy fund, added he prefers medium-term Thai bonds and longer-dated notes in Malaysia. The fund had assets worth $581 million as of June 30. Tailwinds from the dollar's weakness against the Asian currencies will be "less powerful than what we saw year to date,' Kwan said. He expects a "consolidative period for the dollar over the next three to six months' as bearish wagers on the greenback appear excessive. Kwan's comments signal a rethink among investors as the dollar has rebounded in the past two weeks, clawing back some of this year's steep losses as fresh inflation data cast doubts on the outlook of US rate cuts. Meanwhile, signs of strong consumption and a resilient labor market also helped ease concerns about a tariff-induced recession and a sustained decline of American exceptionalism. Despite the latest gain, the Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index is down 8% this year. Joining a broader Asian currency rally against the greenback, both the Thai baht and Malaysian ringgit have risen over 5% since 2025 began. The currency gains have been a key catalyst of the performance of the two nations' local-currency bonds. Thai debt has generated year-to-date total returns of 13.8% this year, with 10.2% for their Malaysian counterpart, Bloomberg data show. Elsewhere in the region, Kwan said he also likes Indonesian bonds of medium-term maturities, as the firm sees another two-to-three 25-basis-point rate cuts in Southeast Asia's biggest economy. The Indonesian rupiah, in contrast, is Asia's worst-performing currency this year, down 1.3% versus the dollar. - Bloomberg

Taiwan, EU face threats of 'external infiltration', president tells European lawmakers
TAIPEI: Taiwan and the European Union share the same values of freedom and democracy, but both also face similar threats from "external infiltration", President Lai Ching-te told visiting European lawmakers on Tuesday. Taiwan views the EU as one of its most important like-minded democratic partners, despite the lack of formal diplomatic ties, and the bloc has had to balance its support for the Chinese-claimed island with relations with Beijing, which views Taiwan as its own territory. China confirmed on Monday it will hold a top-level summit with the EU in Beijing this week marking 50 years of diplomatic ties as both sides seek to navigate trade disputes amid broader global trade uncertainties. Lai, meeting members of the European Parliament's Special Committee on the European Democracy Shield at the presidential office in Taipei, said Taiwan and the EU not only have close economic and trade ties, but also share the values of democracy and freedom. "But in recent years, both have encountered information interference and infiltration by external forces which have attempted to manipulate the results of democratic elections, create confrontation in society, and shake people's confidence in democracy," he said, according to a statement from his office. Taiwan, which rejects Beijing's sovereignty claims, has repeatedly accused China of interfering in its democracy, spreading fake news and undermining public trust in the government. China denies the accusations, but says Taiwan's government is seeking foreign support to push its own "separatist" agenda. For their part, many European countries say Russia has similarly been seeking to discredit European governments and destabilise the EU. Moscow rejects the allegations. Lai said that democracies work not to fight against anyone, but to safeguard a "treasured" way of life, just as Europe strives to promote the spirit of pluralism and human rights. "Standing at the forefront of the world's defence of democracy, Taiwan is determined to work to safeguard democracy, peace and prosperity around the world, and hopes to share its experience with Europe," he added.

Nga Kor Ming demands apology over ‘white elephant' claims as MACC clears RM150 million MyKiosk project
Published on: Tuesday, July 22, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jul 22, 2025 By: Muhammad Yusry, FMT Text Size: As of July 2025, the occupancy rate for MyKiosk stood at 2,926 units (91.75 per cent), while MyKiosk 2.0 recorded an occupancy of 3,518 units (86.78 per cent). — Picture from Facebook/KPKT Kuala Lumpur: Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming today called on critics to apologise to his ministry after the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) found no criminal elements in the MyKiosk project. Nga said the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (KPKT) had taken proactive steps by inviting the MACC to investigate the project following various allegations labelling it a 'white elephant' and other claims of mismanagement. 'There were previously various allegations labelling this project a white elephant and so on. Because of that, the KPKT took the initiative to invite the MACC to investigate. 'When the MACC didn't come to us, we went to them and handed over all the documents for their review,' he said during a question-and-answer session in the Dewan Rakyat. Nga said the MACC subsequently issued a statement confirming that there was no abuse of power, no criminal elements, and no signs of corruption related to the project. 'So to those who threw stones, don't hide your hands. On behalf of all the hardworking KPKT staff who have been tirelessly helping the people, I demand that those who made slanderous accusations apologise,' he said. Nga added that the MyKiosk initiative, which aims to provide standardised, low-cost business premises for small traders, remains part of the government's agenda to support grassroots entrepreneurs. In May, Parti Pribumi Bersatu information chief Datuk Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz claimed that the MyKiosk project was wasteful and had turned into a white elephant. Selangor MCA Youth also lodged a complaint with the MACC, urging an investigation into the funding and implementation of the RM150 million MyKiosk project. Its chief, Tan Jie Sen, claimed that despite the large allocation, just over half of the kiosks were occupied. Nga said as of July 2025, the occupancy rate for MyKiosk stood at 2,926 units (91.75 per cent), while MyKiosk 2.0 recorded an occupancy of 3,518 units (86.78 per cent). * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
