Mother-son duo booked for selling Air Force's airstrip used in India-Pakistan wars in Punjab
A mother and her son have been charged with fraudulently selling an airstrip of the Indian Air Force (IAF) in Punjab.
After a whistleblower approached the court, the government initiated an investigation and charged Usha Ansal and her son Naveen Chand of Dumni Wala village in Punjab's Ferozepur of fraudulently selling the IAF's airstrip in 1997, according to The Times of India.
The airstrip is located in Fattuwala village near the India-Pakistan border and was commissioned in the World War II. The IAF used it as an advanced landing ground in wars with Pakistan in 1947-48, '65, and '71.

The matter came to light when a whistleblower, Nishan Singh, raised the matter with the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
After the HC took up the case, the airstrip was handed over to the IAF last month and Usha and Naveen were booked for cheating by personification, dishonestly inducing delivery of property, forgery, and criminal conspiracy, according to the ToI.
How mother-son duo sold the airstrip
The case dates to 1997 and corrective actions were only taken last month.
In 1997, Usha and Naveen joined hands with revenue officials to claim ownership of the land by forging government documents, according to ToI.
After claiming ownership of the land, they sold the land with the airstrip in collusion with revenue officials with the help of forged documents.
These details came to light in the Punjab Vigilance Bureau investigation that was ordered into the matter by the Punjab and Haryana HC based on the Singh's complaint. The ownership of the land was restored to the IAF last month.
Currently, Deputy Superintendent of Police Karan Sharma is investigating the case against the mother-son duo.
Until the matter reached the High Court, the inaction of government officials was such that the deputy commissioner did nothing even when the Halwara Air Force Station Commandant complained about the airstrip and sought a probe, as per the newspaper.

'Wrong operation done to claim govt funds: Bengal man goes for hernia surgery, doctors remove appendix instead; kin cry foul
The patient alleges the doctor performed the appendectomy to fraudulently claim funds from the Swasthya Sathi health scheme, as hernia surgeries are not covered. KOLKATA: A Sodepur resident has alleged that the doctor had removed his appendix while he was admitted to the hospital for a hernia surgery. Incidentally, the patient and the accused doctor share the same name - Biswajit Das. The patient initially went to the Panihati State General Hospital for his hernia treatment. He was advised by the attending doctor to undergo a surgery at a private nursing home in Sodepur, which he allegedly owns. The doctor assured him that the procedure would be covered under the state-run Swasthya Sathi health scheme. However, hernia surgeries are not reimbursed under the scheme, whereas appendectomies are. A follow-up ultrasound revealed that the hernia was left untreated, while the appendix was removed," the patient said. North 24 Parganas CMHO Samudra Sengupta said a probe had been initiated. "There have been previous complaints against the doctor. If found guilty, strict legal action will be taken," Sengupta told TOI. Meerut: Six months after a multi-crore insurance scam surfaced in UP's Sambhal district, senior officials from the Union finance ministry, insurance regulatory bodies, over 50 insurance companies, and investigative agencies met in Sambhal on Monday to plug critical policy gaps and improve coordination. At the conclave hosted by UP Police, officials proposed systemic reforms to combat insurance fraud, including changes to Section 45, improved data sharing, and tighter scrutiny of investigation processes. The scam, first reported by TOI, involved policies being taken out in the names of terminally ill or dead individuals across more than 12 states. "The findings uncovered during the probe prompted the need for a national-level dialogue on fraud prevention. The idea came from the case details we encountered over the past six months," said Anukriti Sharma, Sambhal additional SP and lead investigator. SP Krishna Bishnoi said the conclave concluded with a range of suggestions. "We discussed better coordination among insurers, the need to relook Section 45, investor protection, standardisation of probe procedures, and stronger communication between cops and insurance firms," he told TOI.
