UPI goes global: UAE-based Indians can now transfer money without Indian number

UAE-based Indians can now send money back home using UPI linked to international mobile numbers/Representative Image Indian expats in the UAE have long relied on Unified Payments Interface ( UPI ) during visits to India for quick, seamless payments. Now, Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) no longer need an Indian mobile number to access this service. UPI can now be linked to international phone numbers, including those issued in the UAE. UPI allows for instant money transfers 24/7, without the need to enter bank details. Payments can be made simply by scanning a QR code or entering the recipient's phone number or UPI ID. Who Can Use UPI? To access UPI services, NRIs must hold either a Non-Resident External (NRE) or Non-Resident Ordinary (NRO) account with a participating Indian bank. The international phone number linked to this account must also be registered with the bank and the account's KYC completed. This development follows an agreement signed in February 2024 during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the UAE, expanding UPI access to overseas Indians. Banks That Support UPI on International Numbers Several Indian banks have enabled UPI services for NRIs using international mobile numbers. These include: HDFC Bank ICICI Bank Axis Bank Federal Bank State Bank of India Punjab National Bank Canara Bank IndusInd Bank Kotak Mahindra Bank IDFC First Bank AU Small Finance Bank Equitas Small Finance Bank City Union Bank South Indian Bank Yes Bank DBS Bank Ltd How to Use UPI from the UAE To transfer funds from a UAE-linked Indian bank account to an Indian recipient using UPI, users can: Use the UPI feature available in their bank's mobile app Use approved digital payment apps like honePe or BHIM Some of the bank apps that support UPI from abroad include: FedMobile (Federal Bank) iMobile (ICICI Bank) BHIM Indus Pay (IndusInd Bank) SIB Mirror+ (South Indian Bank) BHIM AU (AU Small Finance Bank) Registration Process Ensure your NRE/NRO account is KYC-compliant Link your UAE mobile number to the account Download a participating bank app or UPI app Complete registration with your international mobile number Start sending money using UPI ID or QR code According to most banks, the standard UPI daily transaction limit is ₹100,000 (approx. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Play this game for 3 minutes, if you own a mouse Undo Dh4,400). Higher limits may apply to specific use cases depending on the bank. What Can You Pay For? NRIs using UPI can: Pay Indian merchants directly Scan Indian QR codes while abroad Transfer money to Indian bank accounts or mobile numbers Pay international merchants in supported countries (like UAE) Banks like ICICI and HDFC have confirmed that these features are available for their NRI customers. UAE-based Indians can now conveniently pay utility bills, school fees, or any domestic expenses in India without juggling multiple platforms or SIM cards. This is a significant step in financial inclusion and ease of access for the global Indian community.

Puravankara to redevelop 8 Chembur societies in Rs 2,100-crore Mumbai project

Realty developer Puravankara has secured rights to undertake redevelopment of eight residential societies spread over around four acres in Mumbai's eastern suburb Chembur. The project with total development potential of over 1.2 million sq ft is estimated to hold gross development value (GDV) of Rs 2,100 crore. This is one of the larger redevelopment projects undertaken by the Bengaluru-based listed company in the Mumbai property market and is aligned with the developer's continued focus on the residential redevelopment segment in the west region. This follows Puravankara's previous acquisitions of rights for redevelopment projects in Mumbai's Breach Candy, Pali Hill, and Lokhandwala localities. 'Now with 11 projects across Mumbai and Pune, spanning around 14 million sq ft, including 3.6 million sq ft in redevelopment, we are committed to strengthening our footprint in the western region. The region is expected to contribute a GDV of around Rs 18,000 crore, of which over Rs 7,700 crore will come from redevelopment alone,' said Ashish Puravankara , Managing Director, Puravankara. The new project in Chembur involves the development of a premium residential complex along with the redevelopment of 143 existing apartments in these housing societies. 'This will be our second project in the micro market of Chembur. The first project involving greenfield development over nearly 2.1 acres here has received robust response and gave us the confidence to add more projects here into our portfolio,' said Rajat Rastogi, CEO-West and Commercial Assets, Puravankara. The company has so far completed over 90 projects measuring 53 million sq ft across nine cities including Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Coimbatore, Mangaluru, Kochi, Mumbai, Pune, and Goa. The developer's total land bank is 25 million sq ft, and ongoing projects add up to 37 million sq ft. Real estate projects involving the redevelopment of old housing societies and rehabilitation are the mainstay of the Mumbai region's property market, as the land-starved city and its peripheral areas have few vacant land parcels. Ends The redevelopment sector in Mumbai has seen increased activity, especially in eastern and western suburbs, due to constrained land availability and regulatory focus on replacing ageing building stock.
