Ludhiana: A plantation drive was undertaken near PAU's gate no. 1 adjoining the Dr Manmohan Singh Auditorium to mark Van Mahotsav. It was organised with the help of the landscape officer of the university and his team.
Vice-chancellor Satbir Singh Gosal kicked off the drive with the planting of saplings. He was accompanied by registrar Rishi Pal Singh, dean (postgraduate studies) MIS Gill, director (research) AS Dhatt, director (extension education) MS Bhullar, dean of College of Community Science Kiran Bains, director (students' welfare) Nirmal Jaura, additional directors of research GS Mangat and Mahesh Kumar, additional director (communication) TS Riar and heads of departments.
Parminder Singh, HoD of floriculture and landscaping, said the dignitaries planted saplings of species, namely, Neeli Gulmohar, Kacchnar, Lal Gulmohar, Champa, etc.
RIS Gill, dean of College of Horticulture and Forestry-cum- estate officer, thanked the faculty for their participation and encouraged them to hold take more plantation drives in the University.

Chief minister Nayab Singh Saini on Wednesday announced an ambitious target of planting 2.10 crore saplings across the state this year, urging every family to plant at least one tree during the monsoon season in the interest of environmental conservation and a sustainable future. (HT) He highlighted the success of the first phase of the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign, which saw 1.87 crore saplings planted against a target of 1.60 crore. Since October 2014, approximately 18 crore saplings have been planted across the state, he said. To ensure effective implementation and increase forest cover, Saini announced that all plantations initiated by the forest department would be geo-tagged and regularly monitored using drones for up to five years. The chief minister also released two booklets on herbal vatika and nature trails, aimed at promoting eco-tourism in Morni. He stressed that environmental conservation is a collective responsibility, urging individuals to nurture saplings like their own children for at least five years. He also mentioned the 'Pranavayu Devta Pension Scheme', which provides ₹3,000 annually for the care of trees over 75 years old. So far, ₹1 crore has been deposited into the accounts of guardians of 3,800 trees under this scheme. Additionally, he spoke about the Green Aravalli Action Plan in South Haryana—a joint initiative with the central government—to be implemented across four states. Environment, forest, and wildlife minister Rao Narbir Singh emphasised that Van Mahotsav should be a people's movement, not just a ceremonial event. Calling them the silent force and pillars behind Haryana's cleaner streets and healthier communities, he said the cleanliness that graces every street and neighbourhood in the state carries the invisible but tireless imprint of the sanitation workers. He was addressing a gathering of safai karmcharis (sanitation workers) at his official residence, Sant Kabir Kutir. During the event, the workers expressed their gratitude to the chief minister for the state government's decision to raise their monthly wages by ₹2,100, a move announced on the occasion of Sant Kabir Jayanti held recently, an official statement said.

Chandigarh, Jul 23 (PTI) Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Wednesday announced that the state government has set a target of planting 2.10 crore saplings across the state this year. He gave a call to plant the maximum number of saplings for environmental conservation and to ensure a healthier planet and sustainable future. The chief minister said, 'With the support of citizens, I am confident that we will surpass this target once again." Addressing a state-�level 'Van Mahotsav' programme organised at Morni in the Panchkula district, Saini also announced that the plantations initiated by the Forest Department will be geo-tagged and regularly mapped using drones each year. Their growth will be monitored for up to five years to ensure effective implementation and contribute to increasing the forest cover in Haryana. Since October 2014, about 18 crore saplings have been planted across the state, he said. Saini also appealed to the people of the state to ensure that every family plants at least one tree during this monsoon season. He said that under the first phase of 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign, 1.87 crore saplings have been planted in Haryana, surpassing the target of 1.60 crore saplings. Karimnagar: Vanmahotsav celebrations were held at St George International School (CBSE) in the city on Tuesday. The event was inaugurated by Karimnagar Police Commissioner Goush Alam, who planted a sapling to mark the occasion. Addressing the students, he emphasised the importance of trees for human survival and urged everyone to plant and nurture them. He also stressed the need to protect the environment and preserve natural resources. Later, police personnel spoke to the students about cybercrime and safety tips for girls. The programme aimed to create awareness about environmental conservation and promote tree plantation. School Chairman Dr P Fatima Reddy emphasised the importance of tree plantation in maintaining ecological balance. He encouraged everyone to plant saplings and nurture them. The event was attended by Karimnagar Rural CI Reddy, Prohibition and Excise CI Pullaiah, Women Police Station CI Srilatha, Cybercrime CI G. Srinivas, SI Kothapalli Sanjeev garu, Principals Bhargav and Priyadarshini, teachers, and students.
